I also want to add that "Speedy Marie" and "Massif Centrale" rule, especially the former. You really don't like those much?
And "Navajo Know" is light after hearing "Motorway to Roswell," but it's not a terrible song. Just think of it as a kind of "Her Majesty" after the major statement. |

Yeah, like *I* have any room to complain about going off on tangents. <g>
quote: 'Survivor'? I was vaguely aware of it going on at the time, but never really bothered to follow it, as it all seemed a bit silly. Was that like a poll to find out the most popular FB song?
Sort of, but not exactly. People would vote off the songs they didn't like, and the last remaining song would be the winner. Hence, it wasn't always the popular favorite that won, but it was usually one that the majority of voters didn't totally dislike.
quote: Even most Pixies "fans" (not the types who would post on this board) don't seem to acknowledge anything recorded after "Surfer Rosa." So I'll say the latter half of "Surfer Rosa" (everything from "Cactus" on) is overrated.
While I don't know that I agree (I mean, this run contains "Tony's Theme," which I definitely wouldn't call overrated by any means; I might even say it's underrated), I can definitely see what you're saying. I don't think there's enough Bossanova or Trompe love among the general public.

Massif Central is definitely an over-rated song.
Hermaphroditos...
For Pixies, I think of Gouge Away which is great but a bit cliché in the end...?
Isn't it??

I've always wondered if our appreciation of songs is heightened by whether or not we play an instrument.
Instead of just hearing a song as a whole, my brain has a habit of breaking it down into it's various parts, picking out chords, structures and patterns. Sometimes I wish I could just listen on a more superficial level. Many a song has been thrown onto the trash heap because the drums are weak and not used to their potential, just a glorified metronome.

Well he chose to release it as a single, so it's overrated by himself |

Well... yes. Please allow me to explain. Basicly, I don't care much for that song since the first time I've heard it (that should be 1990). I mean "we're cha-ained, ch-aaaained (Kim: chained!), ch-a-ai-ned", what kind of chorus is that? Even when I'm tired of Doolittle and put on some earlier recordings (the dvd-concert, the Timeless Stars bootleg), there's still always this one song I have to sit through. I'm always glad when it's over. |

I love Hey. I'd say Gouge Away was probably the most overrated Pixies track, although I like it more than I like The Navajo Know or *shudder* Havalina.
FB songs... I don't really care for Fiddle Riddle, but it's hardly overrated.

"headache" - oh i said it! i used to love this song, but the more i listen to it the more i realize that its really not one of FB's best. "lone child" - recycling that old chord pattern ("nimrod's son," "bullet") once again just doesn't do it for me "i need peace" - the weakest song on the brown album most of the middle section of Pistolero i usually skip over - "you're suck a wire," "i love your brain," "so hard to make things out," "i think i'm starting to lose it" - the most boring music FB has ever made, which is a shame b/c the rest of that album is fantastic

IMHO the Beach Boys are one of the most overrated bands of all time, but that's fodder for another thread.

I've heard it live a couple times, but when I heard this live in SF, it was hardcore and it rocked. I repent.

There are many FB songs that I dislike, especially on FB&TCs and Pistolero, but I wouldn't say they're overrated since many (most of?) other fans dislike them too
When will Frank find Lyle, Nick and Eric Drew again? |

You cannot love a Frank Black album at first listen. Need 5 more and the magic works.

sorry to seem dumb, but i don't think there is any under- or overrated song. i mean, what you like is what you like, and what other people like is what they like. i really don't understand such discussions. have enough confidence in yourself and the decisions of others, i say. but i have to admit, that i also think that Cult of Ray (the album) is not enough appreciated, even not among his fans.

underrated/overrated. i'm just glad they're on the record for me to hear rather than tossed into the vault, never again to see the light of day. there's probably enough fb ditties/songs that weren't deemed good enough for public listening. i wanna hear
it all looks beautiful to me

Well said, Carl. And by "some people", I mean the people on this forum. There's a reason why it gets trashed by the critics and genral public so often: because it's not very good.
Not that I don't appreciate it when LBF or Dave Noisy throws this album a bit of praise, I think it's cool that they can think that. But I don't really agree. |

COR rocks. totally underated.i think it got bashed by the critics only because it came after TOTY that is hard to equal. personally i prefer COR to pistolero and all the post DITS albums.

>> "so hard to make things out," "i think i'm starting to lose it" - the most boring music FB has ever made<<
::shocked::
I was just going to post today about how "So Hard To..." was maybe my favorite Frank Black song currently. Its like his epic masterpiece and I'm surprised people dont seem to recognize it as such...I feel like its this amazing accomplishment, this grand big beautiful emotional complex song... It blows me away.
In fact, I used to hate it, and say how boring it was ("the middle is ok when its fast but besides that its boring" i was heard to say), this was maybe a year ago... But lately its been matching my mood so well I cant even blink when I hear it. It astounds me. That opening riff is just so sad and makes me want to cry, its so heavy and dark and sad.

Yeah, I'm a fan of SHTMTO and ITISTLI (enough intitials there? <g>). Honestly, I think Pistolero is a very bottom-heavy album. Aside from "Western Star," all of the better songs are on the latter half of the record.

It must just be me because a lot of yall seem to love it but I think "If it takes all night" is a total momentum killer for DITS and I loooooove every other jam on that record. But little things like when he says,"I'm gonna wash my favorite shirt" and that gay little guitar fill accents the end of it. AARRRRgggh that drives me nuts! |

How can you determine the sexual orientation of a guitar fill?

Return of the living thread... Ah well, might as well post in it.
The most overrated FB song IMO is probably Superabound. It's good but I don't see how some people call it their fave song from TOTY.

I know one guy on this forum -- his name rhymes with Mama's Pants -- who thinks it's the bee's knees. And I tend to agree. It's way up there for me. EDF's keys alone make this a killer song. And there's one of the great lines from an FB song: "You don't have much taste for bouquet." And the bass line that follows that line is outstanding. And ...
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |
