Since there's a thread on underrated songs, I might as well start this one.
I can't really think of any Frank solo/Catholics songs that I would consider overrated, but, in terms of Pixies material, I think "Tame" and "Gouge Away" might be. I like them, but I think they get too much attention when compared to other, better Pixies songs.
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

I know what you mean about both those songs, but I do feel Gouge Away is a kind of slow burner of a song. And they are both great songs, to be honest. |

Tame is a very simple song so it's certainly not their best, but for some reason it's one of my favorites (it just does something to me when I listen to it). Now the song I really think is overrated is Monkey Gone To Heaven. Never really liked it. |

"Caribou." I've learned to appreciate it more over time.
"Gouge Away" and "Tame" are two of my favorites Pixies songs. So aggressive and so sexy, respectively.

No matter how much attention gets paid to any Pixies song, it's never enough to merit overrating, 'cause they just don't get enough recognition, ultimately. And, w/out saying, so it goes for Frank Black, too. |

Ooh Vovat, what have you done?
This is tricky. I can't really say what's overrated, but I do think WIMM? is one song jumpers on the band wagon seem to know and recite to prove their fandom. Yet mention Alec Eiffel or Theme From Narc and they'll look as blank as my expression listening to Radio 1. |

WIMM is popular, but that does not make it overrated. It's a good song, no? |

True. But they're missing out on the real gems. The Pixie catalogue needs to be listened too from start to finish. From the college demos through to Bam Thwok. No filler. All class. |

a very good song, that's why i could never say it's overrated. i meant it's not the best song (from a song structure p.o.v) Frank's ever written |

That monkey song wouldn't be much without the "Man=5, Devil=6, God=7"
I was a little upset that he didn't include "Kirk=8" |

'Monkey' will always have a special place in my heart. The way he used to ride that cloud and actually turn into a monkey...cool shit man. but i digress..
The first time I saw the Pixies on tv was a show in England, and Monkey Gone To Heaven was the song. I was hypnotised by...
...the way Black strummed the D chord, then slid to B, then back up to D without lifting his fingers off the board or strumming per chord. ...the way he would sing and look to the heavens. ...that scream for "GOD IS SEVEN" ...Kim just standing there glued to the spot plucking away and singing for fun. ...Joey playing the most simple of solos and looking at Kim with some immense connection ...and Dave's vest
Monkey Gone To Heaven is a cult classic. Through these eyes and ears anyway. |

Nice Post fbc
Was this television appearance pre-break-up Pixies, or the more recent reunion Pixies. Just wondering.

it was an old music show years back which was re-run on some satellite channel. I used to skip to the channel and they'd be the last few notes of the song. missed it again. i sat there many a time through the tuneless bands waiting for it's return then one day, while i was sitting on the floor waiting to press record in anticipation, on it came. black francis in a plaid red shirt eyes to the skies my very first visual taste of the band way before i used the net. i'll seek it out tomorrow and take a pic. that's why Monkey will always be close to my heart amongst the many songs. |

It was'nt SNUB TV, was it? I have a SNUB video with the Vamos from the Town And Country show on it. I have to say, as bored as many become with Monkey, those beautiful chorus harmonies, Joey's guitar and the strings are memorable. And the crashing intro....DAWM DAWN DAWN DAWN!! It's a song that I'm sure intrroduced a lot of people to the Pixies, it really strikes you. It would be another band's best song!! |

With my clammy hand on my foul black heart, I can honestly say that I do not think that any of FB's songs are overrated...well at least not until the comparitively weak 'Honeycomb' is officially released.

Massif Centrale and Speedy Marie.......I don't think they should have won survivor. In no way I could ever comprehend the placement of Speedy over White Noise Maker. |

'Survivor'? I was vaguely aware of it going on at the time, but never really bothered to follow it, as it all seemed a bit silly. Was that like a poll to find out the most popular FB song? If so, was there ever anything similar to discover the least popular thing in the king's back catalogue?

Well, any discussion of overrated Pixies or Frank songs would have to be relatively speaking, right? Neither are huge. However, I do feel the Pixies get a bit overrated. Great music, of course, but I find the performance and production a bit better in Frank's solo tunes, which are outright ignored by almost every critic. Even most Pixies "fans" (not the types who would post on this board) don't seem to acknowledge anything recorded after "Surfer Rosa." So I'll say the latter half of "Surfer Rosa" (everything from "Cactus" on) is overrated. They're okay songs, but not great. This is early Frank, obviously he wrote better songs once he had more experience. Please don't flame me. Just prefer the later Pixies stuff. I'm not just trying to be contrary. |
