So....I've finally been turned on to this band. I was riding around DC with my girlfriend last Friday, and she had a bunch of her old tapes with her. She threw on "Walk Among Us", and I was blown away. Couldn't help but instantly love it! I was moving down to the city throughout the weekend, and basically listened to the whole album about 7 or 8 times...the songs are like short hits of crack (not that I've smoked it), but they instantly made me feel high and I kept coming back for more. Now I've had a bunch of them stuck in my head for a good part of this week.
"20 Eyes", "Skulls", "Night of the Living Dead", "Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?"....everything else on that album... FUCKING AWESOME!
Anyone else here into the Misfits? I'm going to pick up "Walk Among Us", but know there are a couple more must-have albums...care to give me any advice on which other ones to get? |

I only have 'Static Age' but it's excellent, you could try that.

They were a strange band in that their music became more and more "hardcore" the longer they were together. By the end (Earth AD) they were a thrash band. I prefer the early stuff before Robo came from Black Flag to play drums. The Static Age album is a good representation of the early era.
All the stuff's been re-released on countless compilations. |

They had a simple Ramones thing going on, only with a kind of 50's culture/horror theme. A number of really great songs. And Danzig's lyrics were clever and funny. |

Danzig videos were pure t&a fests (with a good dose of dead chicken) - Mother is a filthy classic (and reminds me of so much bad behaviour).
Some Kinda Hate is one of theirs that stands out for me.
PsychicTwin I've got a great little article somewhere (read it only this weekend I think) on the Misfits and Danzig giving a good run down on the best albums which I'll hunt down for you.

This reminds me I need to get more Misfits in my music collection. I will never forget when a friend of mine played Danzig for me for the first time. I think it was around the time a few artists were being sued for supposedly hiding messages in their music. Anyway, there was a intro of a song that Danzig saying something that was played backwards. My friend had a 8-track so we decided to run it through forward to hear what he was really saying. It ended up he saying something like, "Okay...that's good. Now let's run it backwards."
I don't know why, but that totally cracked me up. Right then I thought....this guy is brilliant. |

Surfer- I'd love to see that article...send it my way whenever you get a chance.
from what people have said, I guess "Static Age" will be my first acquisition, after "Walk Among Us" of course...
Marsist - I heard some of the more recent ('97 and on) Misfits stuff...with just Jerry Only...and really wasn't too keen on it. It just isn't the same, man, imho!
In the same vein, what Samhain or Danzig should I seek out? my curiosity has been piqued. I think the only Danzig song i ever heard was "Mother" (thank you, Beavis and Butthead). |

I think Samhain only put out one or two records. They had a nice slowish version of "All Hell." I saw them play in '84. They really seemed like a bunch of pretentious thugs (something the Misfits were also accused of) but maybe that was part of their "image."

Get the Samhain boxed set if you can, you have a better chance finding it than finding the CDs by themselves, although you might be able to find them on vinyl. The Misfits Boxed set is good as well but you don't get a few things. Collection I and Collection II are important for the singles they put out, being that they were mainly a fan club band early on, they just sent out singles to the Fiend Club and these are compiled on the Collection discs. I've got everything that they've released pretty much cept for Jerrys new Project 1950 thing, I was just fed up by that point. I have Evilive II you had to get it through the Fiend Club, it's not very good anyways Michale Graves is pretty weak vocally when you hear him live, I actually saw his new post Misfits band and as bad as some people may think the new Misfits were this band was absolute shit, they're called Gotham Road. Jerry is a really nice guy, it would be great if he could make up with Glenn, I hadn't heard that Doyle had, but that's insane a reunion could come if Glenn decides to swallow his pride.
