I voted for these three albums a couple of months ago for a radio poll, and I still feel ok with it.

1. Sunflower - Beach Boys
2. Bryter Layter - Nick Drake
3. Weezer (blue) - Weezer

The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds
The Flaming Lips, Zaireeka
Guided By Voices, Bee Thousand
Fugazi, The Argument (or Red Medicine. Impossible to decide)
The Residents, Meet the Residents

The problem is that Pet sounds has reached such a state of renown that sometimes I don't know whether I truly think it's the best album ever made or whether I just feel obligated to say that.

I also really like White Trash Heroes by the Archers of Loaf.

Lots of good stuff on these lists. X, Camper Van Beethoven, Husker Du, the Beatles, Sonic Youth - that's all gold. It's really hard to come up with a list like this becuase you have to leave sooo much good stuff out.

Heres mine:

Elvis Costello - This Years Model
The Ramones - Rocket To Russia
Velvet Underground - Loaded
The Pixies - Doolittle
The Clash - London Calling

Honorable mention goes to:

The Lyres - On Fyre - theres lots of great garage rock songs on this CD, but it gets on the list solely on the basis of "Help You Anne," which may be the single greatest garage rock nugget ever written.

:)

All those lists are well and truly excellent, lots of horizon-expanding material here. I just want to add one particular gem that doesn't seem to appear in any of them:

Heavy Vegetable - Frisbie

I jumped on the Frank Black Bandwagon/'Cause Pixies are so 2004
