Hello, I am a new guy who loves FB. I am always looking to expand my musical horizens, and figured what better place to find out about good music from people who like the best.
Anyway, my question is... what are your 5 favorite CD's? You can list more or less if you prefer. I know this is hard to do, and if possible exclude all FB from the list, for obvious reasons. Looking forward to hearing some opinions. |

Well, rather than name my top 5, which can be a perpetually shifting list, I'll name off some great records that you may not have heard.
Bran Van 3000 - Glee The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms Tobin Sprout - Moonflower Plastic (Welcome to my Wigwam) Paul Westerberg - Stereo Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers from the Universe The Fall - Live at the Witch Trials Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice
Let 'em riot. We're Sonic-fuckin'-Death Monkey. |

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Brian Wilson - SMiLE Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue Mark Mulcahy - Smilesunset
(It may seem like I'm overly obsessed with the Beach Boys and its members' solo careers, but it's only because they really are that good.)

I think Bamboo is/would have been an amazing album, but I don't think it quite measures up to Pacific Ocean Blue. Half or more of the songs on Bamboo were written by Carli Muńoz and he's a great songwriter and Dennis performs and produces his songs amazingly well, but I don't think they stand up to the incredible songs, such as "Moonshine," "Time," "Thoughts of You," "River Song," "You and I," etc., on Pacific Ocean Blue. But Bamboo's great nonetheless.

I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

Surfer Rosa and Doolittle would probably be in my top five. I'm sure about my favorites, I'd have to have a think about that. |

Atonal piano melodies by some dead guy (right hand doesn't necessarily match up with the left hand). Enough chaos, so when a melody comes in, it seems like beams of sunshine finally bursting through the dark clouds.
I'm biased, and it's the one album that would best summarize me.
I love Shostakovich. I was really surprised and happy to find out that his music is used for the full soundtrack to Eisenstein's "October" (amazing movie, one of the best). My stepmother used to practice this piece just about every day. One of the only good things she gave me.
My favorite Shostakovich piece is "Violin Concerto in A Minor", though. It's probably my favorite music of all time, actually. Incrediby stirring, emotionally and intellectually. A lot of the themes in that seem to be the completed thoughts from the October soundtrack.
Thanks for bringing the Preludes and Fugues cd to my attention. Something on the radio recently made me want to find them. |

I think it is, or I wouldn't have listed it. I have no idea whether you'd like it. It's kind of folky, and it includes a few novelty songs. If you're turned off by that kind of stuff, maybe you wouldn't dig it.
