I've been listening to Dub Side of the Moon lately (it's an entire album covering Dark Side of the Moon dub reggae style) - sounds like the worst idea imaginable but it works in a startlingly good way.

Anyway - got me thinking of favourite cover versions - there are some frightenly bad ones out there and then there are some that have become classics in their own right like All Along the Watchtower - in my mind that is now a Hendrix song and in no way a Dylan song. Hurt - Johnny Cash is another, I still love the NIN version, but Cash pretty much claimed that as his own. And of course there's Winterlong, Head On - Pixies & Happiness Is a Warm Gun - The Breeders.

There are loads of others that I can't think of now - but figured this would be a way to find a couple of new versions of songs by draining you of all your wonderous musical knowledge.

I'd like to add 'Wild Honey Pie' by Pixies. and 'Hounds Of Love' by The Futureheads for now.

Oh and Mastodon's covers of Emerald - Thin Lizzy, The Bit - The Melvins. (utter self indulgence on my behalf)

Faith No More - Easy (c'mon - they made Lionel Ritchie sound cool)

Gin & Juice - The Gourds, Snoop Dogg

Gloria - Patti Smith, The Doors

I'll risk being burned at the stake for heresy by saying, Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust is the finest cover version in the universe.

For the moment I'm enjoying a lot Nick Cave's version of "Black Betty" that I didn't even knew that it was a cover of a very popular song from a band called Ram Jam that wrote it sometime in the 30's or something like that.

But I'll find some more Surfer, and btw, I like a lot you thread, great idea!

the covers on I'm your fan - the cohen tribute album are great, especially (or course) I'm biased towards the rem, nick cave and pixies covers.

Did I tell the story about when I went to the Bowie concert and he started to play the man who sold the world and the kids next to me said hey isn't that that nirvana tune?! I almost lost it!

Kids!!! Will they ever learn?

And Joey Ramone singing What A Wonderfull World is a very good one too, although it's a song covered by so many singers. Nick Cave's version is also great.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (The NIN sucks in comparison)

Ramones - I Don't Want to Grow Up (I have never heard the Tom Waits version)

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World (Thanks for reminding me, Rita)

I get the feeling that TMBG's version of "Istanbul" has largely supplanted the original.

Camper Van Beethoven has quite a few good covers.

Ditto.

Johnette Napolitano, who appears on that tribute album,
also does a decent cover of George Harrison's "Beware
of Darkness" on one of the Concrete Blonde CDs.

To be fair it is but at least they didn't fuck it up. When they played it live and Charlotte and Tim were practically kissing as the song built back up was pretty hot stuff.

I love the song and they more than did it justice.

I heard a truly haunting cover of QOTSA - Nobody Knows on the radio some time last year - I wish I could remember who did it - it was live coverage of a festival in the US (might have been last year's SXSW) - acoustic and played on the fiddle. Real goosebumpy stuff.
