...a beer-belly without giving up the sauce? I'm 6'0, 175 lbs...height/weight proportioned, and not in bad physical shape without having gone to the gym now for a couple years (lazy). However, my metabolism seems to be slowing as I get older (I'm almost 34), and it shows in the gut. Any exorcise/nutrition tips to shed this area a bit without being too strenuous? I know running helps, and I used to run a lot, however shin-splints have lately become a bore.

i drink excessive beer and run and have a minimal gut. try running again..

i know what you mean though. i go running on the beach. the sand is better for my knees. i hate running on cement. but one tip: it's better for you if you run on an incline.. uphill and downhill. give that a go.

then reward yourself with a cold beer

That's tough because alcohol slows your testosterone production
which is key in turning fat into muscle.
So drinking a beer or two everyday will mean that you will have chronically low testosterone levels which makes it tough to bust that gut.

Drink less often or more sporadically.

and

Don't eat while you're drinking.

Something about alcohol makes your body want to retain fat while you are drinking.

All of this brought to you by the heresay of my brother.

Stubborn belly fat? Have you tried cortislim? (no idea if this works, but the commercials are amusing)

I tried slicing off the extra pounds, but that just resulted in blood and a lot off pain. Thanks floop. I'll try the incline running. Maybe I'll get really drunk first so it will be fun!

I'm with you dude. My only hints would be, don't go for ridiculous fad diets, be patient instead and go for the long run. Not long running, long run.
I've tried cutting out junk food and snacks, eating a more balanced diet, walking a load more and sit-ups. I've noticed nothing yet in terms of belly loss, but I feel a bit better in myself and apparently I have better skin, which is nice.

Running up or down hills kills my knees.

If your knees really bother you cycling or swimming is better, but both take more time than running. Other good fat losers are racquetball, basketball, ultimate, anything fun that makes you move alot.

i've always heard it's better than running on flat ground. but yeah, there are better things you can do.. swimming is great, but it's not always easy to find a pool. running is great because you can just leave your house and instantly start working out. none of this drive to gym, park, walk in, go to the locker room, blah blah..

i think when you work out at a gym you're more inclined to flake out. it's easier to make an excuse to yourself and be like, "it's too late to go to the gym" or whatever

Ultimate - might be called something else in the UK, it's kind of like your football but you're throwing a frisbee and you can't run with it, it involves a lot running try to get open and trying guard the other team

floop - I agree, running is the easiest, I go for quick 25 minute runs, I like cycling but that has to be for at least an hour.

i'm fortunate to be able to run on the sand, which is great. but if i didn't live near the beach i'm sure i could find a park with some grass somewhere, which would be better than cement

oh! OH! I know it! One of my lecturers at my undergrad university was one of you 'mericans, he told me in a club one night that he had represented his country at frisbee.

He got quite mocked for this, we said to him it should be an olympic sport like curling and pointed and laughed a bit. He went off in a terrible huff until he came back with more drinks we didn't ask for and danced badly to James - Laid.

I know a guy (a assistant professor or whatever you call them over there) in the UK who is on the UK national ultimate team. Or at least, that's what he tells me.

I just googled UK national team and I don't think there is one, there seems to be about a hundred.

looks tiring this frisbee game.

You know, I watched this great show PBS about dieting and overall health. It broke down all the myths, explained everything you ever wanted to know about all the fad diets out there (atkins, south beach, etc.) You name it! It was the best, most accurate documentary on the subject I had ever seen. I tried doing a search on the PBS website for it, and couldn't find it. (Unfortunately I don't remember the title.)Which is quite sad, since I would recommend watching it for anyone wanting to improve their overall health and/or belly.

Basically the bottom line is eat less calories (focusing on good fats, carbs, proteins and of course fruit/vegs) and exercise more. The only way to do that is to educate yourself on what your are eating and how much your burning.

Actually, it's your belly.

When the liver swells, you can actually see the outline of it above your abdomen.

But, nevertheless, it was funny.

Shin-splits shouldn't be a problem if you stretch properly before and after and don't over-run. Vary your running also. Rather than running the same thing every day, have on and off days, distance and workout days (such as 800's, hills, etc.; you have to build up your muscles and endurance); and also have on and off weeks--maybe every two or three weeks have an off week where you don't run as far and your workouts aren't as intense. If you do everything properly, you shouldn't have any problems with shin-splints (except perhaps some minor discomfort in the beginning). Sorry if I sound like a cross-country coach.
