So did you vote? Who for? And why?
I voted Liberal Democrat this evening. I don't have a particular allegiance to one party, but I have a fondness for the Lib Dems and they seem to represent a good number of causes of which I approve. My main bias is against the Conservatives, who seem to have some pretty draconian and arcance policies going on.
The race in my constituency is really between Labour and Conservative, but I have no issues with whether I'm helping the Conservatives - I'd rather vote positively for someone I approve of than negatively against someone I don't.
I was actually a little disappointed there wasn't anyone more wacky standing here: in my parents constituency, King Arthur Pendragon is standing on an independent tip (www.independent-pendragon.org), and in Islington South, down the road, Andy The Hat Gardener is representing the Monster Raving Loony Party. I mourn the demise of Natural Law.

I voted, I voted Lib Dem, and I voted lib dem because they seem to be the most forward thinking in terms of their policies and most honest (even though honesty in politics is a bit of a tricky thing) maybe I mean open.. either way they seem to be realistic in terms of what is achievable and the methods available. I agree with nearly all they have to say, I am pleased at the progressive approach they have to environmental and educational issues. I think they are sensible about the NHS and asylum situation also. Plus they aren't pouring the same stale crap as the other two.
I came very close to voting conservative however, because on my way to the polling station some wanker stopped his car to shout abuse at me and some other fucker suggested I flashhim. I'm moving in a few months so would be delighted if the cock slaps round here got stuck with shitty local government.

I voted Lib Dem today for the first time today, I'm usually a Labour voter. There were a couple of reasons for changing. Firstly as the Lib Dems are now probably the most 'left' thinking mainstream party, my politics are probably more in line with them. It was hard to change from Labour but what made it easier was the boundary changes in Scotland. This meant that the Conservatives are the second party in my constituency behind the Lib Dems, and frankly the Labour candidate has been thoroughly inconspicuous over the last month. So partly a tactical change, but mostly an ideological one I guess.
Saying that, I feel less informed about relative manifestos this year than I have for any previous General Election.

The Lib Dems seem to be doing well. It looks like it's going to be a bit closer than most people thought.
Does anybody think that the Lib Dems could make a viable government? They could conceivably become the party of opposition after the next election with the conservatives marginalised *hopes*

I think they could make a viable government, the dividing line between new labour and conservative is such a small one it's about time to try something different.
Unfortunately with the labour lead reduced so far there seems to be a conservative swing. I am still crossing my fingers though as it's so early on but the labour majority in the sunderland (north and south) is way smaller than it was last time with a huge conservative swing. I am really encouraged to see the lib dems right on there arses though.
One of the most depressing thing I have gathered from this election footage though is when they read the number of people who voted BNP. Sad.

It really is, isn't it. I really hope it isn't a hung parliament, although it does seem that Blair's days are numbered.
I'm not sure what to make of it, but I'm afraid to go to bed in case I wake up to a nightmare tomorrow. It's quite amazing the swing of voters from Labour and the fact that few of the polls seem to have picked it up.
Although the lines between Labour and Conservatives are blurred these days, I still don't understand people swinging from Labour to the Cons. It just seems against nature really. One of the main bugbears seems to be Iraq, and Howard would have led us into a war as well.

Lib Dems lost a seat! Labour down three and the bloody conservatives gained three.
The only party to really object to the war was the lib dems, but more public emphasis has been put on that vile man Howard calling Blair a liar, the attention span of the general public is a poor one.
Either that or they are all stupid.... quite likely I suspect :P
The exit poll sort of suggested that there would be the conservative swing but it's a bigger swing than they expected.
I just don't see how Newbury can go from lib dem to conservative! mental.

lib dems were NOT the only party to oppose the war.
and even there opposition was pretty lame, once we'd gone to war they switched to a "support the troops" attitude.

of the main three they were, and I don't think they were left with much choice once the war has started you can't go with an ignore the troops attitude

well, to be fair, if we were only talking labour and conservatives and i give an american party equivelant, labour would be the democrats and conservatives would be the republicans. so some would say it's better that the lesser of two evils are in... it's just because we have an almost viable third party that a lot don't feel they have to settle for the lesser of two evils.

(First: thanks OBW).
Some interesting results here. In my own constituency, Enfield Southgate, Labour minister Stephen Twigg lost out to Tory - I had seen Twigg as pretty popular, and I thought he would win. Oh well. I have no issues with following my own political compunctions though, I don't really hold with tactical voting.
Looks like Liberal Democrat's are going to be shouting for proportional representation again. I think they have a point that the current electoral method is unfair on them - they received something like a 23% share of the vote this time round and a lot of Labour strongholds showed a marked swing to LD - with PR, they'd be a lot better represented in parliament.
Check out the argument between Paxman and George Galloway on the BBC website, it's pretty funny.

I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs! I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking! Hey wait a minute, there's one guy holding up both puppets!

If the same guy is operating all three puppets though I'd like to see where the lib dems are being worked from!
I do love that quote though Owen, but even the Hicks was quite strongly politically motivated, if all the sensible people declare themselves above it they can't complain if they end up being led by morons.
That Galloway clash was quite funny in a cringe worthy disgusting kind of a way. I just hope that odious little man is good for Bethnal Green & Bow instead of riding his "sensational" victory for the next few years.
I also hope New Labour have had the wind knocked out of their sails a bit with this marginal victory and plan to do something about it rather than stagger on, on the same weak ideals.

I hope the result is that there's less of the much-talked-about 'presidential' style of government. With a slimmer majority, policies can't just be bundled through so hopefully it'll work for good. That's the ideal of democracy I guess, let's see how the practice goes.

I voted whilst still pissed so at first I voted for The Liberal Party. Luckily I realised before I placed it in the box and changed to Lib Dems. I wonder how many votes the Liberal Party will get this way? It's not just pissed people who may make this mistake, but people in a hurry or people who don't read things properly. Seriously, I bet The Liberal Party get some of The Lib dems votes by mistake.

In David Davis' constituency, there was another David Davis standing. People just do it to be difficult, but sure, some people will be conned. Typically the drunk Mancs.

They´re only your leader if you call them your leader. Reason I don´t have any part in it is voting seems to me to be a highly passive act, sign paper saying Here take care of my life for me for the next four years, and any system where three morons can legally impress their ideas on two sensible people is open to the possibility of monstrous abuses. I´d prefer to talk until everybody´s happy instead of rigging things in terms of winning and losing where you can create an only fractionally smaller losing minority, what we have now is more about the game than the players.
Here´s another quote I like, from Thomas Pynchon´s V: "Politics is a kind of engineering, isn´t it. Only with humans as raw materials."
