Millionaire - Outside the Simian Flock. It's the band of Tim Vanhamel, who also plays in the Eagles of Death Metal. Great stuff, really.
And the Masters of Reality have a live album, released a two or three yeas ago, with Homme and Oliveri playing on it. |

Thanks for all of Camille's well wishes. I never knew... well, another day. I've had lots of thoughts & noticed things in ways I never paid attention to before. So, thanks.
How was it playing with John Garcia again? I’ve seen the videos from the Wiltern show and it looked like the band had a great time! Was it weird at first? Did you notice the crowd reaction?
Man, I loved playing w/ John again. I can't believe how long it had actually been since we'd last done stuff. Like ten years. Actually more than. I didn't notice the time pass. I just blinked. The band & Johnny had a great time. If the video shows our faces, then I'm sure all you can see is, like, smiles of relief. It was almost like testing a rope bridge & not knowing if it would hold or fall apart. But, once we knew it would hold we were, like, bouncin' up n down on it. Johnny & I have always been tight, even if we've had moments where ya don't talk for 8 months or somethin. We just kinda pick up from where we left off. What's funny is, it felt like that's what we did w/ playin too, Just picked up from where we left off. It made me feel good & I needed that. It was a great way to end the year. I breathed a sigh of relief at the reaction it got from everyone else in the jury box. dude, w/ all the spin & twist, bleep & blaap that’s gone on for the last year & 1/2, I thought ,"well this could be received horribly wrong.” But it wasn’t misunderstood by Kyuss or Queens people, so it gets accepted for what it was: 2 old friends playing together, just because.
After so many years of touring, recording and non-stop promotion, are you glad to have a bit of free time or are you itching to get back into the studio?
I’m always itching to get in the studio. But, I’m glad to have a little time to reflect & observe & learn some new shit. I like to do stuff, it’s hard not to when you get to be a musician. When I sit for too long, I get this nervous feeling that music will take itself away from me. So I try to: water it, listen to it, talk to it, leave it alone for a second (you know, give it some privacy), then put it in the sun for awhile, worship it, try it on, curse it, feed it, beg from it & grow it in order to skip things like copying it or chasing it. No Static things. I feel like certain aspects of writing have the same dynamic as a relationship w/ someone else. Like, you can’t spend every minute of every day w/ the same person or what do you have to communicate about, they were there & two now operate as one. I gotta go out, discover & learn things, that are worth bringing back to camp. Takin chances, tripping, falling & eating a lot of shit is a great way for me to change my perspective or angle that I look at the world. Getting up again is the greatest way I know of testing how much I really learned. So, based on my shit eating intake, I guess you could say that I learned a lot this year (hahaha!). Whatever… I’ll just wait for music to call me & tell me it’s arrived & is ready to be picked up at the station. Then I guess I’ll do what I know to do: go pick it up & bring it back home.
Could you tell me some information about the collaboration with Chris Goss and the 5:15ers?
Well this one is easy. Both Chris & I are always looking for an excuse to do stuff together that doesn’t involve leather shorts.
5:15’s is me & him diggin how lucky we are. We’re always looking for scenario’s that aren’t annoyed by our aimless lack of musical direction. Oh, & when Chriss first was looking to move to the desert, we mysteriously, repititiously kept witnessing 5:15 or 515. Plus Goss is like bacon to me, I love it with anything.
Any info about the future Desert Sessions release would be greatly appreciated too (getting Peaches on there is a great idea, I saw you drumming with EODM on the tour with Peaches and The Distillers a few years back and it was amazing! Her live show is something else) Are you able to confirm any other guests?
Well, I’m always gonna do desert sessions because it doesn’t need to be stopped. I had to postpone doin one in these first couple a months of ’06 because of my little sweetpea & stuff like that. But I’ve been asking the Peach if it’s possible for her to go to the des later in the year. Man, Peach is so badass, it’s incredible. It takes a lot of sand to get up on stage all by your itty bitty lonesome & do the brash boom bash that she pulls, without breakin a sweat. There’s only one peach. I don’t know, putting a des sess thing together is kinda the hardest part: schedules & who with whom & suggesting some cool yet vague catalysts worth pursuing (without feeling like a fuckin dorkus malorkus, ya know). Oh, one other guest, for sure, is this guy called Aaron “the droid” Burke. He plays in a band that just plays classic video game music called the Minibosses. He has a huge pulsing brain & most of ya’ll haven’t heard of him so… In general, it’s a better idea for me to say who was there, rather than who might be there (for obvious reasons regarding blowing “hot smoke”). So, I prolly should stick to that style of keep your mouth shut Joshua. I’m slowly putting together a box set of the first ten desert sessions. I thought there wasn’t much documentation stuff, But actually there’s enough bling blongs to make it interesting. Am I just runnin off at the mudhole or what? Every answer is like a leap year long. Dude, be brief, don’t wear briefs *closes eyes & repeats mantra* anywhy…
With ‘Lullabies’, it seems the record took a more emotional direction, with songs like ‘I never came’ and ‘The blood is love’ having a poignancy that is mostly unheard of on previous releases. I love the surprises that this record brought, the diversity is even more apparent on this CD. Did you realise that it would lead to division amongst some of the fans?
It’s been intense. I knew I was walking into a situation where I could not make everybody happy & before we’d even started recording the unhappy people were so vocal about how they felt. But I hadn’t really said why I had done what I’d done with Mark & Nick, so that question got answered by rumor & by an angry Nick. Music has saved me so many times before & I didn’t wanna say “Nick is violent w/ the ladies & mark is gonna die without help. I’m not on my own cause I wanna be, but because I don’t have a choice. Now forget all that cause here’s the new Queens record!” In hindsight, I was naive. Sometimes words make me feel like I’m trying to do calligraphy with a brick. Music communicates intangible, complex feelings where words fail. So yeah, I sorta stupidly thought I’d play my way out of the mess I was in. “I never came” is about Life knocking you down until you’re ready to give up, but finding a way to rise up again. & “The Blood..” is about looking into the eyes of someone you care about as they pass away & it’s what I said to a special person right after they were gone. When we’d finished recording lullabies, I was confident that everyone would hear honesty & know it was real. I thought ney sayers would respect that it doesn’t hide the emotions of the moment & that its sound is all 3 records rolled into one. But, by the time it finally came out, I think lots of people had made up their minds. Everyone wanted it to be exactly what they wanted it to be or else. I wouldn’t change one note. Albums should be a historical record of their time frames, right? Isn’t that why they’re called records? lullabies is what was goin on for me.
The recent DVD has satisfied the appetites of most fans with a pleasant mix of old and new. Are you pleased with it?
I think that our DVD turned out as good was possible, given the circumstances. DVD’s create alot of needless pressure. Playing & letting it be recorded is hardly new for us. But because it was our first “official” DVD, it seemed that everyone but the band obsessed about their part. The director, Chapman Baehler, Is a badass. He was workin his brains out to meet a deadline. But deadlines for art are weak. The DVD is really good, but you want classic. & I think classic doesn’t happen under a hot microscope. It just happens & someone is there to capture it, which is why I’ve always liked the audience filming. Then it’s you that is actually documenting our collective history. Well, You live & you learn. That’s what I love about the creative process, the learning part. Plus, there’s a lot more old footage that should be released at some point.
Are there plans to tour ‘Lullabies’ further this year? Because us Brits want ya back!
There’s really no plan to tour, but we aren’t gonna turn down something we’re into. We’ll call this “the period of reflection”. Hahahaa!
And finally, is there going to be any new Queens material in the foreseeable future?
There is so much left to do. There are mind blowing songs out there, locked in rocks & they need to be chiseled free. Hahaha! Honestly, I learned so much these last couple a years. I wanna keep turning over stones & looking in the shadows & finding out secrets. Those ideas need a soundtrack. Plus, I feel like I survived the trial & served my sentence. Fuck yeah! I’m free!
