Just wondering if anyone has taken a good listen to the new Queens of the Stoneage album "Lullabies to Paralyze"?
I have been listening to it for a few weeks. I like "Little Sister," but this album just isn't hitting me like "Songs for the Deaf". I miss Dave Grohl's drumming for one thing. The new album is missing that drive for me, and there doesn't seem to be as much dimension to the songs. They don't have that arch or journey needed to give them shape.
Am I the one who is deaf? Curious what others thought. |

Terrible terrible terrible - it's a bad desert sessions.
Burn the Witch is a decent track though, but I suspect that for me it's because Mark Lanegan does the vocals on it.
In my opinion they have yet to better their first self titled album.

Too damn right Carolynanna.
Have you heard John Garcia's band Hermano's 's new album - Dare I Say?

"Sounds" like my ears were hearing what you all were hearing. Damnit anyway. They have so much potential, but just can't quite get there. |

it's not the best Queen's but it's still a very good album, certainly better than all those new rock bands,
the first eight tracks are simply perfect

I suppose it's not a bad offering if you compare it to what else is currently out there, but it certainly doesn't deserve the adulation it's received in the press.
In my mind their best album is their first - their releases just seem to have got blander over time. Songs for the Deaf was good, as was Rated R but in terms of an entire album QOTSA is an all time favourite of mine and a damn tough one to beat.

The first album is very good, but I prefer Rated and Songs, I find them more powerful, more lyric, more ambitious and more homogeneous, and there's no songs as good as "no one knows", "mosquito song", "first it giveth", the lost art of keeping a secret" or "I think I lost my headache" on the firts one, IMO

Hey - at least we're both feeling the QOTSA/Kyuss love.
Have you listened to much of the other Kyuss off shoot projects other than QOTSA?

Hermano (John Garcia - ex Kyuss vocalist) - Dare I Say, is pretty damn good. And it's probably one of the reasons I'm rather tough on Lullabies.
I haven't listened to any Unida - one of Brant Bjork's projects but if you haven't listened to any Fu Manchu then that is most certainly where I'd start. Probably with King of The Road (though that's not my personal favourite by them).

Suspended Animation?
Loving it in all it's craziness - admittedly not got to listen to it much - the husband cannot stand it and my work colleagues cry when I stick Fantomas on. I love their unpredictability - you can't zone out while listening to them - all their stuff holds my attention all the way through. My favourite is probably The Directors Cut, followed by a toss up between Delirium Cordia and Fantomas.
Can't wait - finally getting to see them in June. Dave Lombardo won't be on drums but it'll still be damn good.

Scarey as hell - really good fun - I definitely recommend it. Especially through a forest or mountain pass at night.

I like Lullabies, especially its first half, but not as much as I expected. Many tracks, though catchy, lack power and imagination, some even sound flat. I must say I prefer by far the new Beck album, which I bought the same day. |

I agre with a couple of those, but the new QOTSA album is not better than others. Bloc Party for instance. No chance.
I still can't wait to see QOTSA at Reading though.

Another one just remembered - Eagles of Death Metal
Good fun - Peace Love Death Metal is a really brilliant summer album. In fact how Josh Homme thinks he can get away with producing that and then trying to pass off Lullabies as his next release I just do not know.

Only too happy to help.
Not had a chance to look into Tool yet (hell I've still got cds from the genre mix and comp mix that I"ve not listened to - never mind the fact that I still have cds I bought in January that I've not listened to properly yet!)
I will though. |

i think lullabyes suffers big time from the lack of nick oliveri. the aforementioned lack of 'power' would have been easily added with his great bass lines and intense vocals. i long for a reunion

I think it's the Homme/Oliveri chemistry that is lacking. I'm not a fan of Nick Oliveri's solo stuff and have sat through him live a couple of times and been rather unimpressed or maybe I just need to listen again.
And Josh may be a genius but he is a complete bastard. |
