I've heard a lot over the years about the so-called "Malta mixes" for Trompe le Monde but I've never known exactly what they are. Some kind of alternate mixes I assume. But what's so special about them? Do they sound amazing or something? Could someone please explain? (Maybe This will make for a good discussion, as there don't seem to be a lot of those these days.)

The first link doesn't work.
Are those three clips the only ones available? That version of "Brackish Boy" sounds far superior to the one on the yellow/orange album, which has always been one of the few Frank Black songs that I never really cared for.
So is there any way that anyone knows of to contact this Malta guy?

Shall we make a new petition? That Brackish Boy clip has really wetted my appetite.

I saw the alternative trompe on Soulseek a few weeks ago, tried to download it, but it failed. I've been searching for it ever since. Am I mistaken, or wasn't this on the old FTP?

I remember there being some kind of alternate Trompe on the ftp, but if my memory serves me correctly, it was not the same thing as the Malta mix (well, obviously it couldn't have been the same thing). Maybe just a fan remix of some sort?

This is the info file when I downloaded the mixes of trompe le monde:
"Trompe Alts -uploaded by gavin@frankblack.net-
Here're some tracks for people like me who love Trompe Le Monde, but want a fresh spin on it. Of course, the full 'alternate mix'/outtakes (AKA 'J Malta mix') would be best, but for now we're just gonna have to make due with this stuff and the 3 short clips.
The "Planet Of Sound" (single mix) is from, well, the Planet Of Sound single. The main difference between the album version is the vocals.
The "Head On" (remix) is from a promo cd single. I can't tell much, if any, difference from the LP version, but here it is anyway.
"Letter To Memphis" (instrumental/vocal mix) is a homemade mix combining the instrumental b-side and the LP version. Nothing amazing, but maybe worth the download.
The Malta mix clips are sourced from James Barnard's site. These are all that's available at the moment. If you want the full recording released (supposedly containing lots of goodies, such as an early version of 'Surf Epic'), bug 4AD to release the Trompe Le Monde demos/outtakes as their next posthumous Pixies release. For more info, check the forum thread "Petition: Lost Trompe Tapes!" at http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=54
The "secret mix" is a weird mix of the officially released cd, main differences being quieter vocals and less bass. Not to be confused with the aforementioned Alternate/Malta mix, these aren't 'real' mixes, rather just homemade using a special technique.
enjoy!"

I wonder if, now, with the extremely successful reunion tour, 4AD would be more apt to release any of this Trompe stuff than they would have been, say, three years ago when that petition idea was drawn up.

So does anyone want to create a petition on something like www.petitiononline.com ? I guess if I'm so eager to make one, I should be the one writing it, but I have no idea how to write petitions and to be honest, I'm just too damn lazy.

The "fan mixes" are just the original tracks put out of phase, aren't they? Anyway, Trompe le Monde is my fave Pixies album, but I think I've gotten over Malta and his basically nonexistent outtakes. |

Maybe he just buried them somewhere. Probably on the Greek island that bears his name.
