ARGH! Absolutely dreadful! The Weezer record makes the last two pieces of crap they put out look better by comparison. This one is void of rocking out, key changes, unpredictable yet infectious melodies, and many other things that made Weezer great. The lyrics are contrived as hell. It's so slickly produced that you could slide all the way across it without even knowing you listened to it. There's just nothing engaging about the record. Okay, well, as far as I can tell, there's one song that I think is quite excellent, and that is "This is such a pity," which is a step forward for Weezer even though it harkens back to the 80's like no other New Wave retro band can. The song has quite a wicked sounding solo and the lyrics aren't AS bad as much of the rest of the words on the album. The melody is fantastic. At least we got one great song out of it... but dammit, we used to get 10 great songs on Weezer records. Oh well.

Oh dear. Then again weren't you one of the ones who hated Beverley Hills? I don't mind that song. Having said that, I can see me growing tired of it pretty soon.

Beverly Hills seems to sum up what went wrong with Weezer for me. It's Rivers Cuomo talking about his desire to be one of the stars, one of the beautiful people, even though that will never be him.
Weezer should have been an indie band. They were taking much of their sound from bands like the Pixies and Pavement, but with a crazy Oldies sense of melody. They managed to score a major label deal and got Ric Ocasek to beef up their sound. Then Spike Jonze gave them very gimmicky videos which has mass appeal and by a fluke, Weezer broke into the mainstream. Then, with Pinkerton, they were right back underground. Pinkerton was raw and gimmick-free, what Weezer probably would have been if they hadn't been marketed the way they were on the blue album. But Cuomo had a taste of the big time and couldn't handle not being a pop star. He realized that repetitive, obvious stuff was going to connect with more people than orchestrated, epic, more personal songs would. So now he just writes boring, obvious, pop songs. He thinks he's discovered the pop song formula. What a jackass.

I've spun it once and it doesn't sounds particularly interesting, but I haven't REALLY listened so I feel my opinion on this is a little premature. I'm not really a Weezer fan anyway.

Rivers Cuomo jumped the proverbial shark about as badly as anyone possibly can.
Most people just can't compete with their former selves. But what smart musicians do when they lose interest is expand their horizons. The results aren't always great, but at least they're respectable. I don't like Crooked Fingers half as much as Archers of Loaf, but I can respect Eric Bachmann's new direction.
Weezer, on the other hand, seems to have lost interest AND display unintelligence. The green album was obviously an attempt to recreate the blue album, but this time it was commercialized, devoid of experimentation, and boring. Weezer are a talentless parody of their former selves.
On second thought, they did expand their horizons a bit on Maladroit. But I can hardly show respect for faux-metal filth like American Gigolo. I think their main problem is, as TarTar profoundly stated, Rivers couldn't handle not being a pop star.
By the way, this is the only topic on the first page of the General Chat that isn't flaming. Why have threads gotten so popular all of a sudden? |

Beverly Hills does suck. I haven't heard the new album but if Maladroit is a good indication of where they're going musicly it probably will suck. I followed all the demos they did for Maladroit on the website before the record company stopped them and they were good. Over-produced Weezer sucks. It rips out any life Cuomo still had left after Pinkerton. A bunch of young women should be employed to fuck him up again.

Because of this thread, I checked out Beverly Hills last night. I tried so very hard to be open minded. I really wanted to like it. I respect Weezer, but....Whoa! What were they thinking. They are so much better than that.
TarTar....you nailed it on the head with your review. |

Yeah, I was just looking at that. I hope that the New Pornos take some adventurous steps with their next record. Carl's solo album was just so damned excellent.

What's this? Is this a new New Pornographers track? What the hell is going on? I heard it was unlikely they would do anything together again, at least for a while. My god I hope this means a new album and a trip to England.
Hardly a day goes by when I don't ask me friend (who got me into them) why the hell they are not HUGE. It's a travesty of justice I tells ya!

I wish Rivers would change their name. It doesn't feel like the same band who did Surf Wax America or Tired Of Sex, it almost feels embarrasing calling yourself "a Weezer fan" when they haven't put out anything decent in years.
And Beverly Hills is fucking terrible.

Even the album 5 demos were great (modern dukes, mad kow, which were green album demos too) They just want to satisfy a large group. Geffen was a sort of cool label in the early 90's. But only because indie (or grunge) music was hip that day. Geffen is now part of a much bigger major, and their only concern is to sell sell sell!
But I don't hate Make Believe, I think it's better than Green, because that was to most 'instant-poppunk'-album ever, the songs weren't bad but the production was horrible. This album has some diversity in the production that I like. But I think the songs aren't as great as before. The lyrics are really weak too
pfff, I got used to it already Maladriot was a weak album as a whole (american gigolo, possibilites) Tracks didn't fit together. Weezer-fans hate it, people think it's really bad, but to be honest it has some killer songs on it.
Weezer used to have great singles (Yes I do think Hash Pipe and Dope Nose are great popsongs) but no the singles for this album (Beverly Hills and We're all on drugs) are the weakest songs in their career. How is that possible?
anyway, Rivers should sign with matador and do a solo album, his solo song Longtime Sunshine is killer, it's from the great Pinkerton-era download it!

I'm interested in hearing Make Believe BUT WOHHH "Beverly Hills" is a piece of crap.
Besides that the song is just really boring, the video is what made me hate it. They are trying to show how they are "above" hollywood and beverly hills, they dont need it to think theyre cool, the song is all "ironic" and cheeky and sarcastically saying "Beverly Hills, thats where I want to be" (Cause GET IT, he DOESNT want to be there, cause its all phony ... get it??)
But the video is shot at the playboy mansion, with like models and crap all around them. Oh yeah Rivers, I'm sure that was HELL to shoot, I'm sure it was horrible, Beverly Hills really does suck. It's like the most hypocritical bullshit...Its this big fancy expensive video at the Playboy mansion and we're suppossed to like agree with Rivers and feel sorry for him... It really made me mad. Like, instantly.

I think I understand now why I couldn't understand how come people are so crazy about this band. I gave one of their records a listen once at the record shop and thought it was really boring and crappy. It was strange because everybody was so excited about this band and I just couldn't understand why. But I guess I just picked the wrong CD. |

Return of the Rentals is very, very mediocre. The album is residing in my "I never play these"-pile for the last two years (along with the second Cell album, the Boo Radleys’ Kingsize, a Blake Babies album,... well, you get the idea). First of all, the vocals are very weak and tiresome. And overall, the album didn't age very well. Well, actually, it aged just as well as you might expect from a 90's send-up of 80's poppy new wave. Bad new wave, that is. It's just not even catchy songwriting, which is obviously the one thing that could have saved it.
As for Beverly Hills : it’s in the same league as Undone, and way better than El Scorcho, their two other "novelty" lead-off singles. And it's also way better than "Friends of P" for that matter. Word of advice: play it really loud !
The Green album is three times as good as Pinkerton. Don't let go is better than Tired of sex. Photograph is better than Getchoo ...and I can go on like this for the other 8 tracks. Every single track could have been released as a single. Every time I put that disc in my player, it stays in there for at least two complete spins. It’s classic, timeless, infectuous, well-crafted pure pop, and it rocks reclessly. One of the 10 best albums of the 00’s.
If anybody else is going to call the three latest album not up to par with Blue/Pinkerton, I think I’ll scream. First of all because it’s not true, second because it makes no sense. It would be like dismissing anything of FB’s output compared to Surfer Rosa / Doolittle.
Aaah, that felt good. |
