Just started "The History of Love" by Nicole Krauss ("Man Walks Into a Room" and wife of Jonathan Safran Foer, who wrote "Everything is Illuminated" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close").
I shed tears over every other page of this book. No exaggeration.

The Wind Up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami
Haruki is my friend. His words put me at ease. I don't understand how something Japanese can translate so well.

I finally got "The Five People You Will Meet In Heaven" and read it straight through. I remember seeing a whole thread to it on this forum, and forced myself not to read too many posts so not to spoil the book. It was a splendid read!
Now I am doubling up on the new Harry Potter and "Journey Into Prayer" by Bill Sweet.....which is a fasinating story of a father and son team out to prove the power of prayer through scientific research (spindrift was the name of their group) and then were found dead. It was speculated they committed suicide, but it has never been fully proven. I swear some of the experiments they did were kinda freaky. So far though, the book it very interesting.

speedy, we can still be friends. But I get to keep the Nabokov books. And all the Pixies bootlegs. And the cats.
(I like Haruki Murakami, I like "The Wind Up Bird Chronicle." I'm just not ga ga over him the way some people are.)

How are you liking it, Brian?
I am still reading his wife's latest novel (and loving it). Plus I just finished Kathryn Harrison's latest:
I hated it. I hate everything of hers and I've read everything of hers.
Her work is a like a car accident I can't stop gawking at.
Everything about the woman wigs me out. She reminds me of everything about myself that makes me uncomfortable - the way she writes, what she writes about, even the way she looks. Sorry. I kinda freaked out here.

Bedside reading is The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, okay, not half as good as Wonder Boys and the same idea was done better by Pynchon 35 years ago in fact I donīt know why Iīm still reading it, I still havenīt finished the Tin Drum and thatīs brilliant.
This I found secondhand for 3 squid, pieces and interviews by Burroughs Auster, DeLillo, Nabokov, Atwood and well everyone:

I love Cryptonomicon to bits. Are you finding it annoying? I'm not sure what your post means. (Except that you think you're not insane yet.)

I used to have a Cryptonomicon signature here... It's an amazing book. I'm really looking forward to reading the Baroque cycle, but I'm waiting until I've got all 3, in case it gets really addictive.
Snow Crash and The Diamond Age are brilliant too.

This is a great thread! Some interesting books in here I'll have to check out. I'm reading Celine's "Journey to the End of the Night" again. This book cracks me up to no end, I don't think I'll ever tire of it. |
