Reading still life with woodpecker by tom robbins

Really enjoying it mostly, its almost dream like, from small cigar boxes to planets of redheads from the planet Argon, is certainly unreal, yet parts are strangely haunting, he gets a little convoluted and pretentious at times, but somehow it works with the book, you could get wrapped up in some of his descriptions for hours, while others just grate as trying too hard to be clever.

I love that book, even the pretentious bits that would usually irritate me. I don't know why.

It's about the French estimating the distance between the north pole and the equator so that the meter could be based upon 1/10,000,000 of the distance. It's pretty cool. I never thought about how measures are set. And one the scientists messes up the whole project with bad measurements, doesn't tell anyone, and ends up going insane.

I had an Afrikaans translation of Momo when I was a kid. Loved it.

Most children's books I can remember are crap though. Sorry.

(edit)
I do remember a kid's version of Don Quixote which was excellent
Why don't you adapt Burroughs for kids. They'd love a story about a place called Interzone.

You assume far too much.

Still waging my way through gormenghast taking short breaks for other books.

childrens books, as a kid I liked the deptford mice trilogy but I don't know that this'll be much help to you. Other kids books I rate are anything by Seuss, His Dark Materials, I liked the winnie the pooh books and anything by Enid Blyton especially the magic faraway tree.

I'm so not ashamed of this either.

Some of the newer kids books, the Darren Shan series and the Artemis Fowl boks are ok. I don't really rate potter.

Kids books. Two of my favorites (skipping the classics) are the following.

The Dog who Wouldn't Be by Farley Mowat. A great true dog and a boy story. It had my wife and I almost crying at the end. His Owl in the Family book is good as well.

The Wayside School series. Seriously funny and subversive. Not quite sure why we're reading this to our 7 year old, but it's making us laugh everynight. We're currently in book 2.

Thankee guys, thatīs a great help. The Sideways Stories in particular looks fun.
Wilhelm, I just finished reading Wild Boys and Ghost of Chance so Iīd imagine childrensī book or no, Burroughsīll have a tentacle or two of his in there.
Tre, I donīt rate Potter either. I worked in a bookshop about five years ago where I discovered that bestselling books arenīt popular because lots of people read them - lots of people read them because theyīre popular. The industry creates the successes by its own hype and these Potter books are the biggest exercises in literary mass herding Iīve ever seen.

Carl, you're on exactly the same level as everyone else I've met that's tried to read Gormenghast. I couldn't finish the first book, I just got bogged down, twice. Maybe I'll try again.
The TV version was good though.

I just finished Titus Groan last night, it's well worth reading right through. Another thing I found wonderful about the book was Peake's sharp, sly wit. It's an intelligent, imaginative, vivid book.

Taco, did you know there's a film version of The Handmaid's Tale? I've never seen it, it looks interesting though. Robert Duvall is in it. A friend of mine is reading 1984 at the moment.

Carl, I finished gormenghast (the second one) at the weekend and it is much better than Titus Groan. I started Titus Alone, decided I couldn't quite face it so read Peter Carey - My Life as A Fake which I quite liked despite myself.

Glad to hear that, Tre, must be great if it's better than TG. I was thinking of starting on Gormenghast, but I've been dying to read Wolves Of The Calla for ages. I've borrowed all King's Dark Tower books off a mate up to this one over the years, he must feel like a library! I also borrowed Fight Club off him ages ago, but never finished it, even though it's quite short: I just put it down for ages, then felt that I'd have to start it again, so I ended up giving it back.

Yeah, it looks good. Unfortunately the French translation bothers me quite a bit, which is something that happens to me more and more frequently. They had the crazy idea of translating the song titles and band names into French and most of the time it's laughable. Last week I started again Ellis' Less Than Zero and put it down after a few pages, although I loved this book. I have to buy it in english. I can't read translated books anymore and I don't exactly have the skillz to read everything in english, and that's a problem.

I'm reading Herbert Asbury's "The Gangs of Chicago," albeit slowly. It's an interesting, if not entirely accurate, account about the early years and development of Chicago -- mostly about it's shadier characters.
