One of my students gave me this, about Barcelona of old:

Owen, is this the new "Read any good books lately" thread? Because moments ago I finished Ian McEwan's "Saturday." Great stuff!

It's the second one in the series, and isn't quite as fast paced as the first, which was excellent. I think I'll still buy the next one though.

I'm re-reading this, so I can discuss it on another forum.

Or at least, trying to read.
And Newo, I'm actually reading Zinn this week. For my history class, we are periodically assigned different chapters from A People's History to read. This week I have to read the chapter on The Mexican War entitled We Take Nothing by Conquest, Thank God. I like Zinn, but don't always agree with what he has to say. It is a nice contrast from many of the Patrician historians we have to read in school.
Oh, and Zinn was on Jon Stewart's show a few days ago. He's a really quick witted clever guy.

Sorry, that's a bit small. It says "Carpenter's Gothic" by William Gaddis.
Reading this for work. Not sure I like it.
Yes, this is Ulysses. I fully intend to read it from cover to cover sometime soon.

It's not a bad idea with that lot, I've read them all a hundred times already so don't miss anything, fear and loathing I read in bed, New york trilogy sits in my bag for tedious bus journeys or when I'm meeting someone who is late or for when I'm about town and bored so can go read and drink coffee in the peace gardens, the hitchikers books take about ten minutes to read so it's like flicking a magazine without the pictures.
Steve, what did you think of life of pi?
I keep asking people because I'm not sure what I though of it to be honest, I have some friends who think it's the best thing they ever read, I'm less convinced.
and thanks floop!

thanks for confirming you'll report on the pi thing. It's on my list of things to buy as soon as the fucking bank pulls their motherfucking fingers out of their arse and opens this new god damned account for me. There's a book/film/music shop here that has all the Palahniuk books in for a fiver, as soon as I'm rich again it's going to get messy, that poor shop and the oxfam book shop won't know whats hit it.
I always welcome other recommendations too if you got any, I actually have a little list somewhere of books people have recommended to me.
also, just remembered, Owen did you ever read geek love? what did you think of it (if you did)
It's a shame the forum book club dies (Will Self though, gah)

I have only got that one good Sir, I actually never see his books about (I'm quite cheap and tend to only buy second hand) but I love that book and really want to read more, I may have to bite the bullet and (ack) pay full price (gagchokesplutter) where would you Sir Rock, as a man of taste, suggest I start?
And Floop, I really like GEEK LOVE, it's quite a nasty little tale in parts and muy macabre, as well as being dark/funny. I think it's one of those books you either love or loathe, It is narrated from a one person viewpoint and mixes present story with past story but in quite a smooth way so it's not jilted and jittery. And you can't help but like the nasty little bastards either, in a fucked up way it's almost touching. I would say read it.

Sir Rockabye, I've never read that Pynchon book, but I've heard it was the basis for the Camper Van Beethoven song "All Her Favorite Fruit."
I'm usually in the middle of several books at once.

PI is quite light and not the sort of book I would normally pick up but it was given to me so I did read it, it's typical bestseller some prize or other winning material. I don't really like those books but I thought I'd be fair to it (and it was free)
(is this all off topic, should I start a book discussion thread?)

I don't think Newo would mind us discussing books. At least, I hope he doesn't.
Kittie, I suggest you look out for Another Roadside attraction. That was my first Robbins read, and by far my favorite. I haven't read every single one of his books, but from my experience (perhaps four or five of his novels), the man can't write a bad one.

VoVat, I saw the Camper Van B boys last month and Dave himself told me that it was Gravity's Rainbow that he wrote "All her favorite fruit" about.
Sir Rock, I assume you know that fine song?

pixiesteve, abbrv however you like, although I don't know why people add the ie, to me that looks weird. thanks sir rock, hopefully richness returns to me at the end of the week so I'll jot that in my list of things to read jot book. Have you read still life with woodpecker? i bought it from a second hand book shop/coffee shop in the city where my pops lives (honestly because I liked the cover more than anything, camels being my smoke of preference) and went to read it down by the river, all the cyclists thought I was nuts sat there giggling like an idiot spilling my mass of black coffee everywhere. I pick it up every now and then and still giggle which i think is a good thing. I'm going to have to rush fear and loathing now so I can start it again tonight.
You're right Jedi you can not go wrong with a tiger, I thought it was a nice little story (that lost it's way at points) but loved the idea of the boy in a boat with a big fat tiger. It did not make me believe in god either, my friends have said that they try to live their lives by the book (how can i put this without ruining it for those who haven't finished it) by making things richer? make sense? but I don't get why the book was such a wow and near the end I just wanted to finish it so I could start something new.

Yeah, he said that at the show I saw late last month, too. He also said "Big Dipper" was a complementary song.

Sorry K, can't say I'm too familiar with Camper Von's catelog, thus, I've never heard the song.
Kitten, I read Still Life last summer. It was a great summer book. I really enjoyed reading that one out in the sun.
