I'm not a fanboy. I admit that I don't really like his body of work in the 21st century. I'm not afraid to tell my true opinion because Frank is watching. I love Frank's intention for a new direction. Doesn't mean I like the result.
So why do I buy the albums?
because, as floop said, the man's full of suprises. I LOVE TO DEATH "Frank Black Francis". A 10 out of 10 album. The exception to my comment about "I don't really like his body of work in the 21st century". |

am I the only one who thinks that Honeycomb is a change? I read that some people think that it's not really what they expected since the Catholics are not recording with him anymore. But because it doesn't sound like TOTY or Surfer Rosa doesn't mean it's the same music than FB and The C's records.
There aren't even pedalsteel guitars on Honeycomb for instance. The last 4 FB and The C's had lots of those. There are no big rockers on Honeycomb, no Massif Centrale, no 1826. Production-wise, it's not entirly live and not on 2 track, it's different, not only technical but also how everything is arranged. This music sounds not really as country as DITS. It has more soul, for instance the backing vocals, they are groovy, more harmony. Those Solo's are very different too, Rich Gilbert won't play a solo like on My Life is in Storage.
Can I imagine the catholics playing this music? Yeah probably. The pixies? No way in hell! But that's not the issue, I think Honeycomb is a different way, so it's good that this a Frank Black record and not a FB and the C's.

How can yu take "this live thing" too far? And what spice are you referring to? Are you sure you're not just looking for additives and preservatives? Personally I find the current FB flavor delicious and fresh. feed meeeeee James Taylor?! Time to broaden the spectrum by citizen. quote: Originally posted bypuredenizenofthecitizensb Again, all the FB & the C's sounds marvelous, excellent and bitchin'. What I'm longing for is some effort in the doo-dads dept. Some layers, some art! Whatever happened to art?
Live is fine, it sounds good - especially when you're there. FB has taken this "live" thing too far. It's getting old. We get it already. You and your band are #@%&* amazing without trying. Let's put some spice back into our marriage.
I was really hoping FB would do something that would freak my $#it since he wasn't w/ the Catholics, but I was a little disappointed to hear that its more of the same (Catholics).
I'm not necessarily saying he needs to get Eric Drew Feldman back, but he needs to get more creative because he's dangerously close to becoming James Taylor.

My concern has now shifted from FB becoming James Taylor to some of his fans becoming Rupert Pupkin.
How come we say Los Angeleez?

Along with Shatner and Richard Dreyfus, he's part of my Triumvirate of Over-actors. |

interesting... my only complaint about the first FB album and (to a lesser extent) TOTY was that i thought they were overproduced (similar to my problem with Trompe Le Monde). I really enjoy the FB+C albums on two track. |

I (I am anyone, BTW) hereby argue that Frank Black's first solo record cannot carry the jock strap of any of the first five Catholics records (through BLD/DW). Until SMYT, it was his worst solo record. If nothing else, I could easily see his move away from studio snazz as a reaction to the shiny happy crappification that came out of the tinny hyperproduction of Frank Black eponymous.
Trompe Le Monde (arguably their most studio-y record) could not loosen the latchet of DitS's shoe. Dog In The Sand is easily Frank's best solo effort, and ranks with Doolittle & Surfer Rosa; it is a timeless masterpiece.
See how easy opinions are to fling around?

I over heard Kim Deal talking to Lyle Workman saying that he was going to go down to NO-TRACK recording....just then, Eric Drew Feldman burst in the door and scuppered that rumour with a hearty shake of the fist!! ;) |

At the risk of missing some hip inside joke thing, here's this:

It's an inside joke, I guess, but not a particularly hip one. There was a General Chat thread with the title "Does onyone know this song?", so someone registered as "onyone," and made a post.

Suggesting that Frank Black should change his music is ridiculously egocentric. It's his music, and as with all art, it's extremely personal. Contrary to what people seem to think, art is not a democracy, and our opinions--though we're entitled to them—are pretty much superfluous and have no business leaking onto the artist. Thinking that your opinion will change a man’s art is just plain arrogance.
So... I have a simple suggestion for all of you who don't like Frank Black's latest musical direction: go make your own! It's as simple as that, isn’t it? You all have so many suggestions about how it should be recorded, who should be producing, what types of songs there should be, etc., that maybe you should take these suggestions and incorporate them into your own music. Let me know when you do... ok? Somehow though, I don't expect that to happen very soon.
It's a beautiful day... |
