Black Takes 'Honeycomb' To Back Porch
Pixies vocalist/guitarist Frank Black has inked with EMI imprint Back Porch Records for the release of his first solo album in nine years. As previously reported, the 14-track "Honeycomb" was recorded in Nashville with such veteran sessions musicians as keyboardist Spooner Oldham, guitarist Steve Cropper and drummer Billy Block. The set is due July 19.
Beyond covers of Doug Sahm's "Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day," the Elvis Presley-popularized "Song of the Shrimp" and the Dan Penn/Chips Moman-penned "Dark End of the Street," the new album features 11 new Black originals, including "Go Find Your Saint," "Violet," "Atom in My Heart," "Another Velvet Nightmare," "I Burn Today" and "My Life Is in Storage."
The backing band also featured guitarists Buddy Miller and Reggie Young, bassist David Hood and drummers Anton Fig, Akil Thompson and Chester Thompson. "Honeycomb" was produced by Jon Tiven, a veteran of sessions with B.B. King and Wilson Pickett who previously worked with Black on the 1994 EP "Headache."
Black told Billboard.com in November that the Nashville sessions yielded enough material for another full album, which "has so many people playing on it, we have to kind of wade through it to find the magic."
He described the overall creative direction of the experience as "mellow. It's just the way it came out. Maybe I wrote a little bit in anticipation with playing with those kinds of guys. But they are definitely pre-punk, these guys. So it's not like they don't get it, it's just that they come from a different world, where it's a little more groove-oriented. They don't necessarily play loud."
At deadline, it was unknown if Black planned to tour in support of "Honeycomb." As previously reported, the Pixies are about to reactivate for another round of North American and European shows, beginning May 28 at the Sasquatch! Festival in George, Wash.

It was also cool to hear tour plans,... with maybe some more NA Pixies shows in the works??? Yee Haw!:

| hmm...... besides the title track, all of my favorite songs turn out to be covers... I mean, I knew about Dark End of the Street.. But I thought Sunday Sunny and Song of the Shrimp were his.. |

First solo album in 9 years... Pfff... What would people who do not know frank Black think?
Miserable journalists... not only they can't wright real prose (I guess that is the major reason why they turn out to become journalists) but they just don't know what they are recopying...

Well, Frank Black and the Catholics were a band, so it's been 9 years since Cult of Ray. So that's where it comes from
but yeah
if you look at it.....it's all frank since 1986 anyway
especially since 1993

Yeah, the definition of "solo album" is a bit ambiguous. I'm sure Orangey, Teenager, and Cult have as many backing musicians as the Catholics albums do (including some of the same people, especially on Cult), and Honeycomb probably has more. But because the Catholics have a band name that appears on the album covers, the ones they play on apparently don't count as solo records.

Yeah, you would think accuracy would be high on a reporter's agenda, or at least clear and non-misleading reporting, but that rarely is the case.
As I stated in another thread, I find the following quotes very annoying, misleading, if not inaccurate:
"...will release his first official solo album in nine years this summer....", "...Honeycomb," Frank Black's first solo effort since 1996's "The Cult Of Ray,"...
Why don't they say "...his 10th post-Pixies album in the past 12 years...", or, "...this is #10 since 1993..."
Otherwise, it's misleading and illustrates the reporter's ignorance. |

Just saw this article on Honeycomb on another thread, and, much to my satisfaction, ALEX MAR
(Posted Mar 30, 2005) reports in Rolling Stone, "In the wake of last year's successful Pixies reunion tour, frontman Frank Black is set to release his tenth solo album, Honeycomb, on July 19th."
Now that's what I'm talking about, report the facts, and if you don't know the facts, then shut-up and let someone else report the story.
