....Or just rerecorded?
I personally dont the way he sings "Singing this lullaby" in Sir Rockaby, Davids singing at the end of La La Love You is also pretty bad too. I just think in these two examples the singing seems so forced if that makes sense. |

Hi Samurai...I understand your intentions are creative and well by starting this thread...but BE CAREFUL! Some of these people are gonna skin you alive for questions like this! I personally don't have a problem airing negative feelings about things I love, so I am on your side of expression...just be ready for the responses coming! I've been in this boat here before.

I think all the weird UFO noises in "Brackish Boy" could be cut out. They distract me from the melody.
"Man of Steel" drags on a bit too long. It would be better off as a 4 and a half minute song. |

BLASPHEMY!!!
I wish "Announcement" would be rerecorded, as it's such a great song and the recording does not do it justice.

i think that Frank's farts on his last few records have sounded a bit forced.
i'm sorry, i just think that he is trying to hard to be mainstream.

Wow, normally I respond to these type of threads and my opinions go unnoticed. But so far I've received THREE comments against my Man of Steel comment. Don't get me wrong, I do love the ending and the way it builds up. It's not like I said I didn't like the coda. I certainly wouldn't want it as a three minute song.
I'm sorry. I thought "Los Angeles" was the perfect length, though. If FB scrapped even one bar, hell, even a single chord from the version as we know it, I'd be sad. |

IceCream, just to be sure, are you talking about the Oddballs version or the original one from the X-Files soundtrack? Cause the song is a bit longer on Oddballs and the extra part is quite unnecessary indeed.

Denis..... I rarely post but I wanted to tell you with a smile I distinctly remember when it was announced that Frank would be putting a b-sides collection together and that some of the material would be remixed. My first thought was "i hope they make Man of Steal a bit longer", because I love the ending and would have liked to hear more of it. it never occured to me that some would not like that, which i totally respect. again, this goes to show we are all individuals and we all have distinct and different tastes. |

As I already suggested the falsetto part in Massif Central should have been removed... Frank's beautiful voice does not fit with that kind of performance I am afraid.... This is also the case with 'If it takes all night which is out of tune sometimes.
Don't kill me!!! i know a lot of you find this part more than important... as some of you may think that life without kids is a mistake... no comments...
By da way, the 'Whiskey in your shoes' weird part (poor it down...) that lonely persuader criticized is to me what makes that song so magic, original, and one of the best songs he did!!!
We're so different... I am a marsist. Instead of trying to live together let's split radically!!!

i'm not a big fan of the abrupt endings of songs like hermaphroditos and 1826. thats the first thing that came to mind if i was producing those sessions - give it an ending! and don't cop out w/ a fade

Cheeseman, you're right. maybe not in half, but it could certainly be shortened. and i really like the falsetto on Massif Centrale - 'sleeping gardens where i play my lute....' its great. |

You could indeed cut Blast Off in half... but then you'd get a half-great song instead of a great one.

I think FB has one of the best Good song:Shit song ratios, mostly because he hasn't written a 'shit' song, only one that could be better.
The only song i'd really change would be I Will Run After You, primarily because although the verses and A section are classic, the 'IWRAY' build up section doesn't go anywhere. When I first heard it, I thought 'this is going to go somewhere special, I can feel it'. When It just finished I was very dissapointed. Could have been an absolute classic, especially ith the initial guitar strumming and how the drums are introduced to that.

I think the build-up section of I Will Run is better on the SSMVGD version.
I wish the synth part in Space Is Gonna Do Me Good was played by real trumpets. I never loved the song because the sound of the keyboards makes me cringe.

Hey Samurai, do you really think you have the kougans (translation Japanese for testicles) to question The Man's singing? And, in his own House, no less!
Ahh, just kidding, didn't want you to think TRANSMARINE was bullshittin you.
I gotta tell you though, I just listened to it and, What are you kidding me?!?! That "Singing this lullaby", which he sings once at the end of the song, is great, it's one of the most passion-felt, full of breath from the bottom of The Man's gut, vocals. It's even better through the headphones.
WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE!!!!
(Once again, just kidding about giving you a hard time, I couldn't resist, however, you know, much truth is often said in jest!)

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. IMO the IWRAY section at the end of the song is not suppose to go anywhere, its an expression of his desparate state of mind caused by a broken heart.
I mean in my experiences, running after someone that dumped me for another, or dumped me for any other reason, led to nowhere. If you get them back, they'll likely run away again.

I really like that now, i've never looked at Frank from that sort of perspective, using the form of the song to get across the lyrical and general story.
Another thing i'd change are the keyboard strings in Speedy. Through the 'she's built for speed, speedy marie, speedy marie". It's just poorly written, sounds completely out of place, it should have stopped after the main 'riff'.

These are actually my fave part of both songs. And I love the falsetto part. I'm OK with a shorter 'Blast Off'. I thought 'IWRAY' was going somewhere, but I still like it this way. The UFO sounds at the end of 'Robert Onion' annoy me.

I never payed much attention to the UFO sounds in Brackish Boy....its kind of ruined the song for me now, what was he thinking?
Also the vocals at the end of La La are so bad, when I made a pixies compilation I edited the song and shaved off those extra few seconds because I would have to skip them usually. Franks vocals on Number 13 sound even better after listening to La La love You so i guess it should stay there for that reason. |

I could go with a complete scrapping of Everytime I Go Around Here. Awright...I'm ready for the tomatoes.
Also, I wish Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop were ONE album. I'd scrap The Black Rider 1 and 2 completely. Then I'd nix How You Went So Far, Farewell Bend, I will Run After You, True Blue, and Whispering Weeds...in there place I'd put Velvety, Bartholomew, Heloise, Whiskey in Your Shoes, and San Antonio, TX. This is my idea of a good solid 16 track album. Then I'd rearrange ALL tracks in an effort to sound like an all-night campfire song session.
Awright...I'm ready for the rocks.

Hey Transmarine, good thing The Man hasn't put you in charge of selecting cuts for his albums,...no kidding, no "How You Went So Far"?, no "Farewell Bend"?, no "I Will Run After You"?, no "True Blue"?, no "Whispering Weeds"?, no "Black Rider 1 and 2"?, Won't be none of them at all? Wow!

I know it sounds sacreligious...I just have never cared much for Black Letter Days, with a few exceptions. Songs such as Chip Away Boy, Jane TQOL, and Jet Black River are wonderful...and so is California Bound. I even like 1826! But the rest don't do it for me. Devil's Workshop is 10 times better. And the remaining 6 I chose over the five I placed on BLD are worlds better than the one's I left off BLD...in my opinion, of course!
What else would I scrap...hmm...the intro to Places Named After Numbers. I think some here agree with me that a majority of synthesizer 'voices' used by the very cool Eric Drew Feldman have a somewhat dated and, dare I say, 'cheap' sound to them. Sure, it has charm...but thank goodness the rest of PNAN is sublime. It makes up for that cartoon-score intro. And I'm not talking good cartoons. I'm talking the Go-Bots, or Garfield circa-'86,
