everyone I know who has an ipod loves it and can't stand to be apart, I have a friend who accidentaly wiped her ipod tunes and travelled 200 miles just to go back home to reinstate them, even though she wasn't due to go back to her parents for another fortnight.
My dad used to have one of those jukebox thingies then he broke it on holiday so bought an ipod, it never ever leaves his side ever.

I have an old Creative Labs NOMAD (circa 2000)
No glitches. Bought it cheap on eBay about a year ago.

I had a Rio Karma for about a year, and I had to replace it three times before I switched to iPod. There is no going back for me.

ouch! sorry to hear that alex!
...the iPod minis are, in my opine, not really worth getting. You can't use them for storage (in case you're geeky like me and want to save contact info, calendar stuff on 'em--all they are is a portable hard drive, y'know) and you're kinda stuck with the size of drive on those. I hear it's easypeasy to upgrade the drive size on a regular iPod but haven't tried it...
but, as with everything else, get what you want and what you can afford. for my dough, the iPod is the best option short of carrying my laptop EVERYWHERE AND EVERYWHEN i wanna go and take music.

THe mini actually had contacts and stuff on it but I keep all that on my cell phone anyway. But when I get another Ipod i think I might even go for a photo one and not because of the pictures but cause of the color Also I have way too much music for a mini ipod-5944 songs lol thats 5 times the mini

Wasn't there some complaints about ipod and their battery? Do a search and you'll get tons of hits about such problems. Regarding the 20GB RCA VIDEO MP3 MP4 MOVIE PLAYER, I also think that big, fancy screens reduces battery time significantly. I think. |

That woudl make sense I guess, thanks ivandivel. It really seems like the iriver edges this one, but the Philips and Samsung models are half the price. I am very tempted to go with one of them.

I have an old Creative Nomad (first version) that I put an 80gb hard drive into. It's great if there is power available but you couldn't use it to travel, I have it in my bedroom.
I was given a Dell Jukebox 1 1/2 years ago, only 15gb. I think it is made by Creative and is very close to the Zen they made at the time. I have been happy with it, but I wonder if the battery life is getting short. I hated the Musicmatch software it came with, but now there is a simple Explorer add-in that's just fine.
I don't know if you ever need to record anything. Both of the players I have do not record very well, the old Nomad misses fractions of seconds and the Dell, I can't remember exactly, but it does not have an external jack and I think it had some sound problems. I will have to try it again and see.
A few people I know record the gigs they play and are very happy with the Sony mini-disc players. They have some way of getting the files on to the computer now.

Yeah some of these players have recording functions, one even lets you record from it's radio which would be cool for live sessions etc. I will have to check again to see which one that is. It will also be useful for recording practice sessions.

can i tempt you with a Hi-MD player? the battery life is way longer than most mp3 players can store 45 Hours of Music or 1 GB of Data on one Hi-MD MiniDisc and they are bout 100 quid, so way cheeper, and will last longer, and way easier to manage ur music too, and you can record mp3s obviously and can work as a dictaphone too...i have this one and love it...decided against ipod cos of battery life http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001ZN768/qid=1112132661/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-4327326-7061226

I'm looking into these as well. I'm a Mac man so I'm leaning toward the Ipod but I hear Samsung is coming out with one that will dominate. How are the Ipods for jumping rope, and such?

The problem with that Samsung may well be the price then. If they reckon it will be a market leader then they may well price similar to the ipod and iriver. I'd prefer to pay less than the £200 that they cost if I can.

KOK, if you're jumping rope, iPod (or any hard drive solution) is probably not your best bet. My sister had hers strapped to her arm and destoryed the hard drive using an elliptical trainer. Admittedly, not the best idea, should've been clipped to her waist or somewhere more inert, but jumping rope (assuming you're serious/doing cardio and not messing with me) is a lot more impulsive compared to the smoother rhythm of an arm in a trainer, and you'll like as not destroy it. Better off going with a flash player and dealing with the fact that you only get 2gb tops and it's pricey. Or find another means of cardio. :)
I don't like iPod/iTunes' proprietary bullshit either, but this to me is symbolic of the Mac philosophy. So if a reasonable alternative exists (and admittedly, aside from proprietary formats/DRM stuff/battery life (turn off your backlight!), the iPod is pretty unbeatable) I would go for it.

Looks like you are looking at the other end of the market KoK. I need something to hold my ever increasing CD collection.

I bought the Samsung 925 (updated version of the 920) and returned it the next day. Couldn't stand the ugly-as-fuck design and the voice recording function sounded like dog shit. I decided to stick with the iRiver H10 and I love it. They're coming out with a 20GB version soon.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

Im no expert by all means on these types of things, but ive been using a creative zen player, and that sits me just fine. The batt is really easy to charge up, you get an extra one as well, the sound is good, easy to use (altho VERY sensitive, but that can be changed), nice enogh design (lot of colours) and i believe the 20gb is going for around £170-180?...

You can get 20gb irivers with tuners and colour screens now? What's the difference between them and the H-10 20gb?
