Hehe, thank K, I try my best.
Floop, the only thing our school is really missing is an attractive teacher like Olivia Williams to be a Wes Anderson flick. I of course, would play the role of Max Fischer.

Rushmore... that's a great flick....
Sorry Sir Rock you had to walk so far in the figgin cold. Well at least you could impress the other folks with some major cool vinyl.
This is definately a sad thing... to add to the list of stereotypes the media portrayed the shooter/victims. They called him goth, which I always hate. Why do you have to make it even harder for goth kids than it already is to fit in? |

Last week, I was at the grocery store and a teenage girl was walking in and she had the coolest mohawk -- tall and green and amazing. She was dressed in what today is called "Goth" but back in my teen years (70s) was called how the non-disco fans dressed. Anyhoo. Everybody in the store is looking at her. Old people are pointing. The tweed-and-pearl-wearing SUV moms are whispering. I'm walking out as she's walking in and I lean to her and say "Great hair!" And her face went from a scowl to the sweetest smile.

Bingo! They will find a fall guy, they'll blame some blameless, totally unrelated thing or person. And they will also forget all about this subject until the next school shooting.

But not everyone who wears a black trenchcoat and likes the Cure is necessarily a Goth. It's kind of ridiculous to spread these labels around as if they're somehow relevant to the news.

I have a feeling I know what is going to be blamed in this case....Prozac. Ends up the kid was on Prozac just like some other kid who shot his parents some months back (ironically enough I remember the Prozac part of the story, but nothing else). So now focus will shift to Prozac and nobody will talk about why all these kids are on Prozac to begin with. |

Funny you should mention that mosleyk. My friend's brother recently killed himself two weeks after starting Prozac, and his family is up in arms about the drug and contemplating a lawsuit. I'm not sure what to make of it. It seems like a new phenomenon.

I actually work in research. I started working as an analyst for the IRB of a medical university and now I am in Peds Hem/Onc running their studies. When I was in the IRB I remember coming across all sorts of adverse event (AE) reports with anti-depressants. For instance Zyban which is marketed under that name for smoking cessation is actually an anti-depressant and you wouldn't believe all of the AE reports for people who took it to stop smoking and then ended up with suicidal and homicidal ideations. Not too mention reports of how horribly it interacts with alcohol.
Honestly, I think that anti-depressants are very serious drugs and unfortunately docs can be too quick to prescribe them because we think just because something has an FDA approval it is safe.

Amazingly, the FDA finally started requiring "black box" labels on antidepressants last October. |

my ex did a study on antidepressants, he told me that the trouble with them is often rather than treat the depression they give a person enough of a lift to do something about it, ie suicide. A good many depressives actually don't do the deed because of the lack of energy and enthusiasm towards it and everything. Fluoxatine gives a quicky fix for that

mosleyk, zyban = wellbutrin, if I remember correctly.
I feel a bit funny talking about anti-depressants because depression is such a horrible thing and people should be helped! That said...two of the people closest to me have undergone bona fide personality changes since each went on SSRIs. One, yes, had her depression lift but a sort of carefree attitude bordering on mania ensued and she made several amazingly bad choices. She's the first to admit that she traded one devil for another. Oh and she's a mental health professional. The other person, after going on anti-depressants, has had his emotions outright flatline, like he's perpetually in a yoga class. You could tell him his cat got run over and he'd give you a Zen stare. He's no longer depressed but he's a zombie and hard to connect with or even talk to. And he thinks this is dandy and sings the praises of his Paxil. Still, I am convinced that anti-depressants help many, many people.

luke was not ashamed of dv, just afraid at first. then came acceptance and forgiveness and redemption (after he cut off his forearm) for dv. luke allowed his anger to escape and at the same time, his father's...
dv's daughter prob. never got the chance to forgive on celluloid. now that's sad.

Yes Zyban is Wellbutrin. And they discovered that it worked to stop smoking cravings after many people living at residential care facilities taking it were noted to have stopped smoking. I used to work in a residential care facility for the mentally ill, so do have a genuine interest and passion for these issues. I agree mental issues must be addressed. I am not anti...anti-depressants. Infact, most of our transplant patients go on prozac for a time. But, they are very closely monitored. And the prozac really helps them get through the very long inpatient stay pre and post transplant.
Unfortunately I really believe many doctors are too quick to prescribe them when behavior modification would work better. Also, studies have should that anti-depressants and counselling need to go hand in hand. Many doctors prescribe and don't refer.
I am sorry you have had to watch friends struggle with this issue. It certainly is not easy for anybody involved and there are no fix all answers.

this has been my experience as well. i work mostly with acute spinal cord injuries and literally every single quad that comes through the door is put on either zoloft or prozac within a few hours of admission. can't swallow the pill? hell, we'll crush it up and shove it down your feeding tube.
i was on prozac years and years ago and it made me absolutely nuts. i'd walk out of the house, leave the front door wide open and drive around town, no idea where i was going... randomly passed out a few times...not fun.
I love my dead gay son! |

I was one of those one plane of emotion prozac users, it'd last for a while then everything would crumble again so they'd up the dosage until they had me on I think it's 60mg isn't? multiples of 20mg with 60 max? I don't remember. I just remember not feeling much of anything for a long time.

I talked about it with my mom and I remembered my teenager years. If I had access to guns in those days I sure would had killed someone. That's the point, I guess.
