Personally, I've never shoplifted in my life. I've never really stole anything, I've never held someone up at gun-point and demanded their wallet before I "blow their fucking brains out!".

Pretty much - I've never stole anything. Except in kindergarden I remember stealing a blue peice of lego that was shaped like a mail-box because I thought it was cool. Apart from that - nothing.

I remember my first year in Jr. High I walked home with a girl one day and we went to a corner store and she stole a pack of bubble gum ("Duble Bubble") - in retrospect, I think she was trying to impress me. She told me she wanted to be a hair-dresser, we walked to her friend's house that afternoon.

Anyone in here not a dweeb or nerd and has actually stolen something?

I also go on regular pilfering missions in the office supplies cupboard at work for all the cd mix swaps, though I don't see that as theft - more a case of putting it to better use.

I've never stolen anything. And while I am a dweeb/nerd, I don't think any portion of this is a result of not stealing.

I think... being a dweeb or nerd, as you said - is not a result of NOT stealing. However if you ARE a dweeb (and/or) nerd you will more then likely NOT steal. I guess that kind of makes sense.

I think of it more as liberating the innocent mp3s from the sterile confines of the world wide web

Stealing MP3s,
I would like to consult Mr. John Frusciante on this one, qouting his exact words from some kind of radio interview he did, that I downloaded off the internet, as a ILLEGAL MP3;

"What do you think of the internet as a way to share, distribute, and listen to music, art and poetry?"

"I think it's wonderful man, I'm especiialy happy, like you know... last night, I was playing songs I've been playing in these last few shows that I've been playing. But either then that people shouldn't know them, and people knew these thongs that aren't't on the record - and I love that!"

...he continues to say

"...because I just think music is for people, you know, I don't believe that when a song writer writes a song, I don't believe it's just for them - and what they can get out of that song. To me, when someone writes a song it's there to put that feeling in people. That's why the spirits give them that song. And the second like, a person thinks they're the one responsbile for it and it's there to get them something, and it's THEIRS - their music starts to suck"

...and goes onto say, my favourite qoute,

"I've just seen it over and over again in histroy, when people really start to be possesive about it, it's not theirs anymore. You know, it's kind of like the same thing would happen with a girl. If you have a girlfriend and like, you just got really possesive over her and got jealous all the time - she's more likely to fuck around on you all the time, and not feel like she wants to be yours, if you're possesive all the time - music will do the same thing to you."

Since I generally either buy albums I download and like or delete/don't listen to them, I consider it more of a preview. The only music you can get a sense of in those 30 second previews is the repetitive dreck on the radio. I suppose you can call it stealing since you've got something that's commercially available that you've not payed for, but it's not like I've taken a physical product (which costs money to produce/ship/etc). Really, it's information of a sort. You can't compare it to taking a candy bar though the RIAA would like us to.

Further, at least for me, I buy more music now than I ever have before, which is to say that I now buy music and prior to a few years ago, hadn't bought anything that wasn't John Williams since Soundgarden. This is a result of being able to hear good music and then go get it. The old system (for those of us who listen to music you can't find on the radio) would have me going in blind and randomly picking out a CD based on its cover art or band/album name. Or getting a recommend from someone else (I know very few people with good music taste, I'm afraid). Or a mix disc so I can hear it, which, really, is the same thing as the MP3s, no?

And none of these are good marketing schemes for independant musicians who can't expect much less rely on radio/tv play. Downloading MP3s is the best thing to happen to music since the Beatles. It facilitates word of mouth since I can now recommend stuff I've heard and liked which I probably wouldn't have heard otherwise. I can share my music with you so you can hear it yourself. And you can, in return, share your music with me so I can add to my collection.

As long as people purchase the albums they like, this is really a perfect situation for good musicians. The shitty ones, on the other hand, will start losing money as people discover alternatives. And I could care less about them, especially since _I'm_ not downloading their songs with a ten foot cable.

Personally,
I think the entier "Music Piracy" thing is giving the file format - MP3 a bad rap. Like seriously, what did the file format do to you? Now whenever anyone hears "MP3" they think theft, or piracy. I would like people to apperciate the MP3 format for what it is - a excellent way to compress large audio files.

Poor MP3.

I've only shoplifted twice: one egg and one porn magazine.

I stole the egg because I didn't think they'd sell me only one. I smashed it on my enemy's head on the last day of 9th grade.

I stole the porn because I was too young to buy it.

I've taken the odd thing from various workplaces,
which I like to think of as my self-implemented benefit plan .

In junior high, I had a boyfriend and he and his couple of friends stole all sorts of things from cars to newspaper boxes (for the change inside...)

I think I might've told this story, but once he stole a full size arcade game, Galaga, right from the mall. We were walking outside the mall and the guy who delivers games to the arcade left Galaga right outside the mall doors on a dolly. He and his friend just walked over and wheeled it all the way home.

i've stolen people's seats at concerts plenty of times.

i once stole a 6f x 8ft logo rug out of the front of a papa john's pizza joint. we rolled it right up, stuck it in the car, and it lived in my dorm room for most of freshman year next to the papa john's napkin dispenser.

I love my dead gay son!

That's awesome, I would have to say - in a very serious tone; if I was ever given the chance to steal a full sized arcade game - I would.

When I was twelve I needed to inflate a newish football but didn't have a needle. Our local department store sold lots of footballs, usually with a handy needle nestled within the threads, but nary a one separately. So I liberated a needle from its football and stuck it in my pocket.

Funny thing is, years later as a college freshman, my dorm buddies and I needed to inflate a football so my roommate and I headed to the store. The same situation still existed: no needles sold separately, so I pocketed another one. Out in the parking lot I learned that my roommate had done the same thing.

I play xbox live with a local kid here (he's like 19) and me and my sister's boyfriend always go over to his place for LAN parties (a bunch of nerds/dweebs all playing Halo 2) and his house is basically the epidimy of worthless noveltie things. Like it's the scale of what most frat guys have laying around, x100.

They have this cardboard cut-out of Darth Vader, and a full-scale Boba Fett helment. A bunch of worthless things, I don't know if they steal them or buy them on eBay or if one of em' works at one of these places where he can just take whatever he wants home - I didn't ask.

Anyways, there are three of them sharing a house and it's packed full of this stuff. I think probably the only thing they don't have is some sort of pinball machine, or arcade booth.

Someone tried to steal a Yamaha O2R mixing console from my university once, its a good three feet square and heavy as you like. They just dressed as a repairman and walked out with it. They got to the end of the road before they had to drop it and jump in a taxi.

People are slacking on the stealth front nowadays, don't you think?

On the morning after my wedding day, my husband and I had a nice little surprise. We had just finished breakfast in the hotel where our reception was held the night before when security knocked on our door. The guy asked us if we could come view some security tape with them. It would seem that some of hubby's friends had way to much to drink as we sat down and watched a tape of them stealing all the fake plants and a table or two out of one of the lobbies and loading it into their truck. A few very irate calls from Mike and the guys brought it all back. Funny now but very embarassing then.

According to socially responsible shoplifters, it says that its a redistribution of wealth and then it goes on to say that items are "liberated" (hehehehehe) from the stores...

When I met my wife we were 18 and unemployed.

-

From June of 1999 to March 2000 I think we bought about $20 worth of stuff.

-

She lived near Sandusky, Ohio. In Sandusky there were a few "big box" stores (Wal-Mart, Meijer, Staples, Ames, Pat Cattan's) with really crummy security.

We were really friggin' great at shoplifting. Anything from candy bars to a Sony Playstion.

-

Wish I still had the guts for it.

i saw some lady steal something in the supermarket the other day. that was kind of cool. we gave each other a knowing grin

the best way to steal something (listen up all you younger forum members: Sir Rockaby etc..) is you have to also buy something. you look way more suspicious if you just walk out.

Sir Rock, don't listen to floop. He's just trying to corrupt you.

Here's what I did:

I was walking around a store by Filene's in downtown Boston, strolling, looking at things, checking out a couple of clothing items. Then I went down to the T. On the train, en route to meeting Mr. Kathryn, I suddenly and with horror realized that
I'd walked out of the store with a sweater I'd considered buying. I'd thrown it over my shoulders so I could have a free hand to browse.

When he saw me he immediately asked what was wrong because I must have looked freaked out, which I was.

But did I schlep back from Cambridge to return it? Nope. I kept it.
