I sometimes take a bass line of guitar riff and just mix the chords/notes, reverse them or whatever. I think a hell of a lot of bands have done this over the years. Pixies songs are obviously a particular favourite.

john lennon always said that he wrote the beatles "beacuase" when he heard yoko ono playing beethoven's "moonlight sonata" on the piano and asked her to play the chords backwards. i really should try stealing more people's brilliant songs by rearranging them

I read a Captain Sensible interview where he talked about writing songs by recording TV commercial jingles and playing them backwards.

I have tried with classical music too. I got the most joy out of Bach I think.
