I am no guitar player, but is there any way someone could explain to me how to make that thing with the guitar that Caribou opens with? You know, when the Cm and the G chords are played? Sounds so simple but I just can't seem to figure it out. As I said, I'm no guitar player.

Yep, that's it. I'm sorry but I know so little about guitars I can't even express my thoughts properly. But that has to be it. So can you help?

Muting is most often done with your right hand. I lay the bottom of the palm of my hand on the bridge and applying varying degrees of pressue to the strings to get different muted sounds. It takes a bit of practice to be able to pick or stum while doing this, but it will open up entirely new sounds you can create with the guitar. Palm muting is also a great way to control tone, volume, etc, etc... I hope that helps, it's hard to describe in words.

Don't know how you're trying to play it....but it's best to go from the G to the Cm by using the G barre on the 3rd fret of the sixth string and the Cm barre on the 3rd fret of the fifth string.

G

Cm

You hold these chords like this (this is just hand position reference...this guy is actually playing an F, but if you move the position up two frets it's a G):

When you move down to the minor you mute the sixth string with the top of your index finger. I wouldn't even worry about the palm muting at first just try to strum the G twice then the Cm twice and keep repeating that until the chord feels comfortable and you can keep up with the CD....then start to incorporate the palm/left hand muting and other little details.

Thank you hawken, that's the kind of reply I was hoping for. I'm already quite comfortable with the chords, but muting I know nothing about (I'm completely self-tought). So thanks again, I'll try and see what comes out.

In the intro he is playing the bar cord described above, but to get the sound he is playing the first top strings then the bottom ones. Try that.
