My first topic so go easy ;)....I was going to post one on vomit, but what with the state of the board threads and stuff, thought I'd leave it.

Anyway, I was thinking about this because I still have three grandparents on the go, my mum's dad (88) and mum (83), and my dad's dad(80). My mum's parents are fairly done in, need a bit of care, don't get out too much, some debilitating, if not yet fatal, medical problems.

My dad's dad is quite sprightly and although getting a bit frail, still has quite a spark. In fact, this weekend he was taken to Barcelona for his 80th by his three sons and ended up getting completely legless, leading to my dad calling him a 'disgrace'. He couldn't even stand

Now I guess most of us would prefer to be pissed in Barcelona when we're in our 80's than housebound in a Glasgow flat, but does it worry you? Do you hope you're still listening (if you've not gone deaf) to contemporary music, or will you be playing FB on your CD player that's as worn out as you are? Will you be using your 'grey vote' to fight for environmental reform or leave it to the kids?

I only hope I do not outlive my children.

-

I think that energy prices will be so high we won't really have to worry about cars or CD-players. (They don't run on candlepower.)

I hope I will have taught myself enough about self-sufficiency to be able to pass it on to my children and grandchildren.

I don't think I'll be housebound. I mean, without a car I won't be making any long trips, but I'll be able to get around my little plot.

Take a bite of the chocolate coffin.

As long as I keep my hair and a good erection, I don't care about getting old.

Yes, I'm worried about it. I'm a kid that never wanted to become an adult.

Now I have an image of a mad, old frenchman running about the countryside, yanking his tool. I didn't want that in my head :(

Still, both are important.

Old people scare me. gey make me feel ill. I know its horrible, but they really do.

Its the same with babies...and i guess you sort of revert to being a baby in old age.

I would not like to live past 80. Preferably id be going in my 70s. IM not scared of death, i embrace the idea, but old age...another matter

Yeah, I don't mind death (but not yet, big man), or even old age, it's the slow wearing down of all your faculties - both physical and mental - that scares me I guess. That's what I see in my mum's parents.

It's like they're being whittled away, bit by bit. They know it, they hate it, but there's not a damn thing they can do about it.

And GypsyDeath, you're right about reverting to being a baby in old age. There are things my two year old daughter can do, such as going to the toilet easily by herself, that my 83 year old gran can't.

I think that we have to live our life the better way we can, so that when we get older we won't regret what we haven't done. And if it goes like that, in my opinion, we will be in peace with our age.

What bothers me, in fact, is to suffer, or to have a old body in a young mind.

I don't care so much about getting old as aging (i.e. sore this, can't do that). Though being young I'm still in that "think I'm invincible" phase, so it's never really on my mind.

I do worry about what I'm doing with my time, like if I'm not getting done what I need to or getting where I saw myself getting by a certain point within my life. That bothers me all the time.

Good topic.

My hair's falling out already, I'm pretty resigned to that. I'll refrain from comment on Monsieur's other point though.

I never really felt my mortality till I had kids. They seem to do that, on one hand you kind of relive some of your childhood through them, and on the other they make you consider old age/death more. Well they did for me anyway.

And for the more phallic-minded of you, your angle of erection drops as you get older. Also, 100% of men over the age of 80 suffer with prostate problems, which may also have erection consequences. Just be glad they don't have to cut the nerves as often these days to fix it.

So what you're saying here is that you don't have to worry about getting old, its the being old that's the problem?

Aaww shucks Kathryn, thanks. The vomit topic might have been quite funny, but some people feel there's too much regurgitation on the forum. (I didn't plan that)

No, no, vomit is good. I have some good, recent vomit stories. Which reminds
me, ObfByWill's point is chilling and what I think to make my narcisistic self stop freaking over the aging process.

Eh, old age doesn't really bother me at this point. I mean, I'm in pretty good company. Statistically speaking, all of you old folks will be in the grave whilst I am still living it up in my mid to late years. Inspiring, isn't it?

it depends how much anti-perspirant and kraft singles slices and pop out of pop-cans you drink, also, you will probably spend more total time on a cellphone than us old folk, sir rock. looks like we'll be drinking out of a straw at the same time.

Listen you spunky youngin'. As a teenage guy, you might one night find yourself wrapped around a telephone pole wishing you never got into the car. While us old boring folks are safe at home trying to program our Tivo.

Don't make me play the "do you have a loved one who
suffers from Alzheimer's?" card! For one thing, I would
have to learn how to spell that word correctly; for another, things
could get ugly and they've been so cordial and lovely so far.

Plus, darwin does have a good point: your being a third
my age, young man, cough cough, does not protect you
or disqualify you from an early or ugly death.
