Any FB fans here listen to math rock? I'm down with early Melvins, Lynx, Don Caballero, Slint (I know they aren't strictly math rock, but they certainly influenced some bands), and, very recently, Hella. I got turned on to Hella via some mp3s on www.5rc.com (Deerhoof are another cool band on the 5RC label) and decided to buy "The Devil Isn't Red" last Tuesday. I've been listening to it nonstop.

Absolutely. I grew up listening to Slint, Rodan, Crain, and their spawn (June of 44, Shipping News, Aerial M/Papa M, etc) and now-largely-unknown peers (including my old band) as local bands in Louisville, with a lot of bands like the Jesus Lizard or Melvins playing those shows as they toured. We just saw Rachel's (members from Rodan/Shipping News, Hula Hoop, Seluah, probably more) play on Thursday night. Think math rock combined with orchestra - amazing show.

Oh yeah - Tim Furnish from Crain is now in Parlour - awesome stuff as well. He is coordinating the rerelease of Crain's album "Speed" which is due for release in April. We got an early copy at a recent Parlour show and I will testify that it is an incredible record. Shoot yourself if you don't get it.

What he said, plus
I'm familiar with and love most of the bands you listed (Melvins and Slint especially). Don Caballero are great. Haven't gotten into Deerhoof yet, only heard a couple mp3s so far.

You like Oxes? Them's are good. Bunch of others, can't think right now.

Shipping News are touring in April.
Melvins rock.

The "math" thingie always kinda bothered me. I dunno, I see it more as jazz. I saw an early-ass review of a Slint show by the Louisville guy from Matmos - he described them as "heavy fusion". That works for me.

edit: my typos are getting so sucky.

There is also a band that would fit nicely here called Murder Your Darlings. I saw them once, opening for Enon. MYD blew the back wall off the joint. As a courtesy to the remaining acts I will not review their performances. Apparently they just released their first record, although I can't speak for or against it as I have not yet heard it. Awesome live act though.

I third the question. It's not really a term used over here (principally because we speak correct English wherein the abbreviation of mathematics is in the plural), so would it go so far as to cover bands like Mogwai and Godspeed? or not so much?

Whenever I hear talk of math rock or any kind talk of anything related to jazz in rock bands I almost indefinately turn off. I've heard a lot of bands called math rock I think the main thing that they are referring to is use of alternate time signatures which a lot of people, especially drummers think that the bands are insanely talented players, that being said some of them actually are.

well that topic went ker-plop. all because of a stupid critic-born label that means crap-all.

I hate critics.
I restate my above post. Some of those bands are really damn fucking good.

Hey Cheeseman - is it possible that it might be Mathematic Rock? Mathematics is the subject covering various kinds, as I understand it. The queen's english indeed.

Oh yeah - and I have heard people who are classified as math rock that absolutely suck, like most genres. Should be a standard qualification, really....

Yeah there are some bands that I think are pretty cool that I've heard called math rock like Shellac. I don't know if they're really math rock because as was said before I really don't understand the genre, except for the little things I've already mentioned.

I don't really know what math rock is, but I know that there is a great album by NOMEANSNO called "0+2=1"

So that's math-like.

No no, this topic's fine! :) I guess math rock (or maths rock, heh) is kind of a stupid label when you consider the plethora of bands and sounds that are stuck with it, but I like to use the term when introducing people to bands like the ones I listed. It's easier than saying metal-jazz fusion (though I very much agree with that label when applied to Don Caballero) or some such thing. Anyway, I will definitely download some mp3s by the bands you guys listed and highly recommend that others do the same. I can list a couple more bands that I've heard: Two Guys (featuring the drummer from Pinback on guitar and vocals) and Chevron (horribly-named local band I saw open for the reformed Don Cab).

I should add that Shellac are damn good and that, while I haven't heard the Oxes, what I've read about them is pretty damn funny (particularly the controversy surrounding the artwork for their second album).

I'm waiting for 'woodwork rock' and 'classical studies rock' to be next big thing, it's still very underground and avant garde. I've never really heard the term 'math rock' before, but putting Don Caballero, Slint and The Oxes into it, I get an idea of what sound 'math rock' is supposed to be. So would Tortoise be 'math rock', thier a band I love and have never been able to discribe thier sound, not that I like pigeon holing things though, even though thier sound has evloved alot though they still have abit of a jazz element. There's an Irish band called the Redneck Manifesto who sit perfectly into this genre, anybody heard of them? (ha ha, using '' all the time is really annoying, isn't 'it')

Thank you thank you for this topic - this is a fairly newish genre for me but one that it turns out I LOVE.

The Melvins, Dillinger Escape Plan and Mastodon.

All 3 just cannot get enough of their stuff.

And god knows what I'm going to be like when The Melvins tribute album comes out in January - some of my favourite bands covering Melvins tracks.

You want it all but you can't have it.

Math Rock (as defined by Epitonic.com)

Take the intricacy and complexity of classic weirdo hard rock bands like Rush and Voivod, then add some of punk's hyperspasmodic schizophrenia, and you'll have a legitimate math rock contender. Math rock bands take pleasure in being erratic and unpredictable, often experimenting with peculiar tempos and jazz-derived rhythms while keeping the rock hard and aggressive all the while. Their lyrics tend to be as cerebral and expertly designed as their songs. These bands are rock's architects of the future, recrafting and reinventing the genre's tired song structures.

The term 'math rock' always puts the picture of a guitarist in my head.

He standing on a very dimly lit stage, eyes closed, biting his lower lip. Just really digging himself.
