Well, he's got diverse tastes and talents and for awhile there he seemed to be alternating funky albums and mellow albums.

Here's a sampler:
One Foot in the Grave - Blues (there's other minor label albums I don't have)
Mellow Gold - alternative (whatever that means)
Odelay - rap/alt/party music
Mutations - quieter, a little latin influence (fantastic album)
Midnight Vultures - funk, Prince (grew old quickly for me)
Sea Change - his quietest album, first few listens I thought it was nice but a bit repetitive, now I think it's great
New album coming out in month or so is suppose to be a mix

If you want the louder stuff try Odelay (or maybe Mellow Gold) and for the quieter stuff get Mutations.

stereo pathetic soul manure

I missed a chance to see him live beofore odeley won a grammy, never seen him live.

I used to listen to beck a lot, One Foot In the Grave is a good starting point, but no single beck cd represents his whole body of work.

I never got into mutations very much... i was doing something else....

I burned the rest of them up

not having listened to him in years, I thnk I am going to bust out one foot in the grave...

Dos'nt he have a new album coming out? Mutations is great, as is Sea Change. The songs are more solid than some of the stuff on previous albums.

Darwin, you forgot (?) to mention Stereopathetic Soulmanure, an unidentifiable musical object which came out on a small indie label, Flipside Records, just before Mutations. Not the best Beck album, but certainly the most 'beckesque' in my opinion.

Btw, his new album is actually about to come out:

Editorial Review
Amazon.com

Now that Beck has effectively exorcised his personal demons with 2002's hyper-confessional Sea Change, he can get back to the business of being a total fruit loop. We all know what that involves: video game sound effects, random shouting in Spanish, and rhymes about popsicles and vegetable vans. And that's just the second track. Guero is like every Beck album condensed into one, a no-holds-barred collision of two-turntables and a microphone with the added bonus of guitars, bossa nova beats, Jack White, lyrics about spaceships and dump truck full of ideas all fighting to get heard about the ruckus. It's an exhausting and exhilarating listen with lots of peaks, such as the digitized power ballad "Broken Drum" and handclap drench folk freak-out "Farewell Ride," and more than enough to restore anyone's faith in Beck as one of the most chaotically inspired songwriters of our time. -- Aidin Vaziri

The new album has some really good singles. E-Pro and Hell Yes (Remix) get in my head all the time.

Beck is a god, hands-down.

I quite like the new album as well, sort of a 'more' sophisticated Mellow Gold/Odelay. Very fun and weird. I was completely hooked after about 3 listens.

In my defense I did say:

One Foot in the Grave - Blues (there's other minor label albums I don't have)

Didn't he have a weird deal with his label where he was allowed to put out some albums on "minor" labels while still putting out albums on the "big" label?

I saw this Sir, but I thought Stereopathetic Soulmanure was worth of mention.

Yep he did. If my memory serves me correctly, he initially wanted to release Mutations on a small label.

I agree with you all, the man is a genius, something like the Bob Dylan of the 21st century.

Yeah, Mutations is cool. I didn't buy Midnite Vultures and Sea Change though, the first one cause I heard it and didn't care for it (I think it's wildly considered as his worst) and the 2nd one cause Nigel Godrich produced it and I FUCKING HATE Nigel Godrich.

(yeah I know, Godrich also produced Mutations, but... but that's different, cause... it's a good album)

Hated Midnight Vultures at first, but I do think it's one of those that was dismissed far too quickly.

It's a brilliant album - it's just that it came after Odelay which is a tough one to follow, by anyone's standards.

Mutations was between Odelay and Midnight Vultures. MIdnight Vultures has it's moments, but too often it feels like an imitation.

I wouldn't consider One Foot in the Grave "Blues". I would consider it awesome.

Beck is a god. "FEATHER IN YOUR CAP" is the best song of my lifetime.

There. I'm not biased against basic rock. I'm just biased against bad music. Even then, I'll be nice. If I like what the guy's trying to do, I'll show some respect, even though the tune might not be catchy.

Mellow Gold and Stereopathetic Soul Manure are my favorites; Odelay and One Foot In The Grave are really good as well. Haven't listened to the others much (though I've had plenty of chances).

I don't like the new album. Crushing dissappointment.
Couple of decent tracks but it isn't of the standard of his others.
Maybe I need to listen to it some more but nothing stood out to me on the couple of listens I've had so far.

I agree with Nicole. I should listen to it more, but at first listen nothing really stood out (except Scarecrow which is pretty good). My main problem with Beck now is that it sounds like he's bored of playing music. He sings all the songs with the same halp-asleep voice, he's not putting his soul in it.

3 sides of beck...

the self-admitted "boogie bullshit" funkmeister

the folk/anti-folk indie rocker with an oddly tuned guitar (he CAN actually play it well when he wants to)

the electronic musician period he went through in the late 90s, including producing some instrumental "techno/breakbeat" tracks

...i personally cannot stand the boogie bullshit side at all..."midnight vultures" and this new disc i can live without. dont like a single track on them...dont like much of odelay, either. that said, im a huge beck fan...got 65+ "studio" recording mp3s ive ripped from various sources of recordings i got and only a handful are "boogie" stuff (beercan, sissyneck, soul sucking jerk). he's got quite a depth of work. the UK release of his Mutations albums with the extra tracks...now that's a hell of a Beck album imo.
