I'm really getting sick of this movie. Everytime someone mentions it I through up a little in my mouth and swallow it again. I know by posting this thead I can't be helping.

I remember seeing it in very early July 04'. I downloaded a bootleg from the net, I think it was from one of the selected screenings or something. I could hear people laughing in the background and all. Of course this wasn't a PIRATED MOVIE. I don't do that kind of shady stuff.

Then the movie was EVERYWHERE here in Canada. Every movie theater started showing it. Then it started, all the pop kids started qouting it. By then the movie was kind of old for me, so I thought it was cool since I did enjoy the movie the first time around, so it was kind of cool that people were begining to recognize it.

I remember talking to my friend about it one-time over the phone, and then like the next month he said something to the effect of "Hey man, have you ever seen the movie 'Napleon Dynamite'?" like he was completely ignoring me when I was telling him about it.

It seems like people are still just discovering it now. This kind of cool indie film gets bought by MTV and turns into this big giant awful cinema-monster.

I can see this turning into one of those movies that you will see promos in the future saying "FROM THE PEOPLE THAT BROUGHT YOU 'NAPOLEON DYNAMITE'..."

Oh well... I'm sure something new will come along.

I was kind of looking forward to seeing it until hearing all the shit reviews from people that I know, as well as a lot of folks on this board. Plus hearing that mtv produced it (kind of) doesn't make me want to run out and see it. Probably should I guess. Did watch Donnie Darko & Rope by Hitchcock this last weekend though...Not to shabby at all.

i don't think MTV "produced" it. as far as i know, it was a self-funded film that went to Sundance, then MTV and Fox Searchlight got involved after the fact.

not that it should matter anyway..

Yeah. Well, I would recommend you watch it. It isn't a bad movie, personally I like it. But the thing is... it just started getting dragged out and everyone started qouting it.

I suggest you watch it alone, and then after that... NEVER SPEAK OF IT AGAIN!

...and yes, it was a self funded film. It was shown at Sundance and MTV and Fox Searchlight got involved. I heard that they added a wedding scene at the end of the DVD and it actually cost them more to make that scene then it did to make the entier movie.

Pedro kind of reminds me of a Spanish friend I had in high-school, his parents were straight from Nicaragua. He always asks me things like "What's a camel-toe?" or "What's latex?" or "What's a hummer?"

Ahhh... poor inocent Nicaraguan. It's not his fault he has a geographical-handicap.

Elephant,
Napolean Dynamite is a good movie. Just because a lot stupid people watch it doesn't necessarily make it any less of movie. And just because somebody sees it before most other people doesn't make them a better person.

Ask yourself this: What if Frank Black caught on? What if all of a sudden everybody was into Frank Black? They were raving about all of these records that we have been listening to for quite awhile now. What would you think? What would you say? Would you start criticizing FB for "selling out." Would you get sick of him and stop listening just because your little secret was gone?

Just because something hits the "mainstream" doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing. Granted people may not understand it or enjoy it as much as others, but at least they are listening or watching. At least they are beginning to be exposed to something different, something creative. There's a lot of crap out there these days. The more people that support the good things the better. People have to break their conditioning somehow.

However, I do agree with you that it sucks when you tell somebody about something amazing and they totally blow you off only to come back later and say how great it is; it's like the only reason they saw it was because everyone was seeing it. But why let that ruin it for you? For example, I tell people about the pixies, frank black, and sonic youth all of the time, and they hardly ever listen to me. On the other hand, when they come back some time later, saying how awesome the stuff is I'm like: "What did I tell you, man? Now check out these albums."

Nothing like a new convert, eh.

RIP HST

I've never seen it and don't really care to, but I'm sick as hell of everyone quoting it. Every five minutes someone will say "Your mom goes to college" or "Gosh" or whatever the hell else is said in the damn movie.

I kind of sound like one of those stupid indie kids, who thinks that when bands are played on the radio they're "selling out". But all these people have ruined the movie for me.

If Frank Black "caught on" it would be awesome, I could finally let a big "told ya' so" go and live my life. But say, for example, 95% of the population qouted Frank Black on a daily basis - I would honest have to say I would find the man's music a little less appealing.

It's the same thing with Napoleon Dynamite, a very original comedy. But the main thing Napoleon Dynamite presented was it's originality. Now when people are rippin' that originality down, qoute by qoute, it begins to ruin the movies "magic".

Also... yes, I do feel special because I saw the movie before everyon else. Ha ha ha, It makes me feel so self-important.

Ha ha ha. It's like we should be wearing very tight suits and wearing monicals, talking in a ball-room. "Well, dear chap. Point well taken!"
