I am planning on buying a laptop before going into grad school in the fall.....
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about a good buy.....I have absolutely no idea....
I need something that is all around good (for school and home)....will likely be my main computer and can only spend a maximum of 1500$ (Canadian) or $1200 (US) ...
I was planning on going to Future Shop (Best Buy) ...since I was told that it probably the best place to go, but I dont wanna be duped by someone who wants to get commission....
however, I need something that I could use for about 5 years....
does anyone out there have any advice on the subject / or can give me some model names they think would be good?
I am really worried about this. |

I work at Best Buy selling computers. If I didn't just come from work I'd probably sell you a laptop over the net as if I were working, but right now Jim needs a break. First of all decide what's more important, horsepower or mobility. If it's the former, consider a P4 or AMD Athlon 64. If mobility is more important, consider the Intel Centrino. My current favorite notebook is the HP dv1170. I'm in love with it. If I were buying, that's what I'd get.
Definitely get the service plan for it. I'm glad I'm not working cause I can openly say you'd be crazy not to with a laptop.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

depends on what you want to do, fbf.
what are you studying in grad school? do you play lots of games? do you need specific software for your studies (your grad. department can tell ya)?
there are lots of things to consider before you start lookin...do you want to go wireless?

Service plan? I always thought those were for chumps. At least that's what Consumer Reports says.
Get an iBook. Actually I would argue against buying a laptop unless you really need the mobility for traveling or for working at home and work. They're too easy to lose. Two grad students just has theirs stolen from our lab a few weeks ago. But if you need the mobility then you need the laptop. |

laptops have everything you'd want in a desktop though. so, when the time comes for wanting transportability, there you have it. for me it's all the time.

Laptops don't have the speed that desktops have (at least not at huge prices). And I run simulations on my machines, so speed (churning out the numbers) is what counts. Plus they're harder to steal or drop.
But, I would love to have a laptop too. |

But laptops are weak if you use them exhaustively. As a proof, you can't have a server on a laptop. And it's expensive to customize or repair them.

i have a GB of ram on my laptop. there's nothing i can't do on it. i run Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and tons of other shit at the same time. i could cut a feature film on here. granted i'd still need an external drive to store some stuff.. but it would still be less klunky..

Yes it is. We broke the screen of one of those evil machines in my job and it was cheaper to buy a new one. And it was a relatively new machine (Yes, we lost the care pack).
