I'm still in denial, and can't believe he would kill himself. He was at odds with the FBI, and others, for decades. He was always pissed off, I can't fathom he would crack like that, it just doesn't wash.
He was a great journalist, Kentuckian, and from my hometown of Louisville. It somehow made the world better to know he was in it. We're all going to go to a shooting range today, here in KY (we're visiting family), and drink some whiskey (after the range), bust up a typewriter, and generally go as wild as we can in his honor. I wish we had the balls of freedom to do it like he used to. This is a fucking sad day. |

This is very disappointing. Dr. Thompson was a fighter. Suicide didn't seem like something he would do. This untimely exit will certain make an impact on an already strong legacy. Maybe the publicity on his death will inspire a keen interest from this younger generation. Maybe the good doctor planned it all out with a stroke of genius. Perhaps this will create the sparks for a revolution. Do you think they'll catch?

When I first went away to college I had a really hard time adjusting and was super depressed. Around the same time I started reading hunter s., beginning with the great shark hunt. His books were one of the only things that I really enjoyed at the time, and it helped to get me through it. I owe the man. RIP, duke.

I'm happy that I finally got to sign in,
I think the problem was that the computer was thinking it was 2006, it usualy thinks that or that it's 1980. I have a time machine, I can access it by right clicking in the bottom right hand of my screen and clicking "Adjust Time/Date".
It's kind of crazy that he's dead. I just bought "Kingdom of Fear" last week. Which is my first HST book, it's kind of strange, I finally get around to reading one of the man's books and he shoots himself in the head.
Anyways, It's strange that I haven't seen anything on the news. Not even on CBC radio. |

I heard a rumor that he had prostate cancer. If that were really the case it makes me feel a little better. I would have hated to see the man suffer and fade away.
Maybe Frank Black will write a song about this. That would be cool.

What makes you say that? Has Frank Black ever mentioned HST before, do they have some sort of relationship?
I think that's probably the way he was meant to go though, like you said, I can't see a man like that fading away. I think he would have to go quickly, and it's almost as if now he will live forever. That's probably one of the best things baout becoming a author. |

The day before he killed himself, he asked his son to shoot his cremated remains out of a cannon over his property "if anything happened to me." That's what they're planning on doing now.

The more I hear about this, the more I'm interested. I can't believe they haven't talked about this on any news outlets on telvision. From what I've seen - nobody has mentioned him.
I knew he wasn't uber-popular, but I thought that he would atleast get mentioned. Like, he's had two full length "Holleywood" movies made from his books... and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a really popular movie. Atleast form what I've seen.
Maybe it's because here in Canada we don't care about American authors or something. I don't know, it's strange. Maybe I don't watch enough telvision. You always see these nobody talentless asses getting all this publicity for croaking, but why not a great author like HST?
I think a bullet in the head is the way to go out now of days, also it's probably better to leave your death kind of a mystery.
HST is the kind of person you can't see getting too old though, like seriously. If someone can say this is a surprise - they're obviously not farmiliar with the man.
I remember seeing him on Conan a while ago. He was probably one of the most interesting guests. Halfway through the interview he confesses to making bombs in his basment. |

The only reason why I say that is because Frank Black comes off as a well-read person. And he's just quirky enough to be a gonzo fan. In all fairness, it's only an assumption.

Just prior to his death Hunter S Thompson invented a new sport, Shotgun Golf, with Bill Murray. His description:
"The game consists of one golfer, one shooter and a field judge. I spent the last week in Aspen, Colorado, and had the opportunity to eat a meal at the Woody Creek Tavern, one of HST's hangouts. I ended up dining there the night after his death, and was surprised that the locals and regulars were in such high spirits. I suppose that maybe they were celebrating his life, whilst getting quite drunk. I really don't have a lot of knowledge on the man's life, or his writing, but perhaps his death will inspire me to go out and read one of his novels.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a classic but his early political writing and Hells Angels are certainly worth checking out.
