my car cd player is fucked up, but i'm not sure if it's the stereo or some electrical problem.

i'll be playing a cd and the sound will drop out and come back. but not drop out completely . it'll get all warbled and distorted, then drop out, then come back.. and it seems like it does that during the loud parts of songs (?).. but it's not "skipping" because the sound comes back where it should be in the song. i question whether it's a simple connection problem because it's not just losing audio and coming back, but sounding f'd up.

it's truly torturing me since i listen to most of my music in the car (as i am always stuck in traffic). but my stereo isn't under warranty so i can't just take it in. .

can anyone shed some light? it's causing physical pain

Like you said, if it was a loose wire to the speakers it would seem like the sound would just drop out rather than getting warbled.

Does your systems also have a radio or tape player? You could eliminate connection problems if those are still working fine.

it does it with the radio too, but not as much, which is strange. i wouldn't know where to begin, and taking my stereo out on my kind of car is a bitch.

yeah, imagine every time you're getting into a song you like, all of a sudden the sound gets fucked up. or drops out completely. it is serious torture..

i'm ready to just get a whole new system, but i'd feel stupid doing that if it was something really simple

traffic is torture, but without music, it must be like hell.
You should first try to ask to someone that knows about that.

Have you screamed at it? I mean really screamed at it. If there's room I'd suggest kicking it. Yeah, it sounds like a wiring problem. Somethings loose somewhere. I'm nervous about my car because I'm going to have a friend help me install a DVD-audio player in my car and then put in 5.1 surround sound, just to see if it will work. It probably will, but there will be a lot of extra wires where something can go wrong. I'm glad you started this thread, otherwise I probably wouldn't have been as conscious about it. Best of luck.

Just my mere presence has been known to fix car stereos.

My suggestion would be to buy me a ticket to LA and I could lay my healing hands on your stereo.

Any other route would be futile.

Does the effect happen more often as you turn up the volume? Also, do you have an amp in your car?

it does happen more when i turn up the volume (to 10).. like i said, it's strange. and painful.

i would just take out my stereo and look at the wires but in my car (Honda Civic) it's such a bitch. you have to take off the whole dashboard to get the stereo out.

Surfer's healing hands are sounding very appealing.

I don't think you'll find anything with wires. It sounds like your amp is having problems as it gets near the rails. Possibly you've installed something else recently that's drawing more power and dropping the voltages, or some non-critical component has failed inside the driver. But difficult to say from here obviously.

I could also be completely wrong.

what year is your car floop? it may still be under warranty. i used to work for a dealership, and whenever there was stereo complaints while still under warranty they replaced after a basic troubleshoot. troublechoot was to make sure the operator(you) was not a complete retard and hitting the mute button or complaining that sound was only coming out of their right-side speakers because they had the fade turned all the way to the right.

You may not have an external amp, but all stereos have some sort of amplification built into them. Otherwise, you'd need power to your speakers (and the sound would be amplified there). I second the new car/stereo/idea. I assume you don't have anything new in your car (command start, etc)?

Hey there mister Floop, here's some info. Check the bottom of this page - is this your stereo mentioned in the common problems section? Can you not get a cheap stereo from somewhere to test with, or at least buy one and take it back if the same problem occurs (i.e. a more serious electrical system fault)

http://www.carstereohelp.com/honda.htm

Here's some info about removal:

http://www.carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalHondaCivic2.htm

Ah well, onwards and upwards
