Hey Mike, what's up homey? I've been digging these Maximo Park cats lately (woxy has been playing 'em daily). You like? Gimme all the UK dish on these fellers. |

I am surprised you have them over there already. They are from Newcastle in case you are interested, but I have to say they have yet to grab me yet. If you are on Soulseek, I have 3 songs of their's you can download.
Going Missing Graffiti The Night I Lost My Head (My favourite 'cos it reminds me of The Futureheads, who are from Sunderland which is very near Newcastle).
This was in last week's NME:

Something about bands from that region are scratching me right where I itch these days. woxy plays everything cool, so that's how I heard 'em. Also, I read about them here: http://www.thestereoeffect.com You can stream their video of "Hounds of Love" there too. Good UK music site. I also browse http://www.playlouder.com and http://www.soundsxp.com for my limey fix. Thanks for the 'fo (short for info, which was not short enough fo me).
I'm evil_speakers on Slsk (not to mention various other msg boards). Who be you? |

Hmm, tomorrow I should be around. Probably around lunchtime, or 24 hours from now. Does that work okay? I'm sure there's plenty we could exchange (I have impeccable taste). |

Well me too of course. Actually a lot of the songs I have on my PC are songs I have downloaded. There isn't much of my record collection on there. Feel free to dip in though. See you there tomorrow hopefully.

Did I mention I love Slsk dates? Most of my .mp3 collection is stuff I don't own (uh... yet!) as well. I look forward to dipping. |

Oh, and Mike, I haven't really been able to dig Bloc Party too much, but woxy is playing "Price of Gasoline" right now, and it's pretty darn good. I think my major issue with them is the guy's voice. It's okay, but not really great. You like? |

Oh my god yeah. I have had the album for a couple of weeks now (thanks again Limewire), and it's fantastic. They really are being tipped for big things here. I have seen them live 3 times now, and Kele (the singer) is a fabulous guitarist. You can get the full album from me tomorrow on Soulseek. They deserve your full attention. They deserve everybody's full attention.
I kind of know what you mean about his voice, it is quite unusual, he almost just speaks some parts, but it suits the songs I think. I have put a couple of their tracks on my latest mix CD, and there was one on my last one too.

Ya, I've got the album, and I've been digging "Banquet" and another I forget. I might just have to move there, too much good music. (Actually, my rough long term plan is to move there. See you soon.) |

The band you really wanna look out for is Nine Black Alps. I have been championing them on here for ages now. They are set to be the next great Manchester band (I have seen them 4 times already, once at a house party here) yet they sound nothing like your typical Manchester band (and all the better for it). You won't like them if you don't like Sonic youth and Nirvana, but I most certainly do so they're great to me.
Surfer Rosa has heard them too, she has caught the buzz also. That's not surprising though, pretty much every major label in the world wanted to sign them. They had label guys from LA calling their lead singer in the middle of the night, promising to make them the biggest band in the world. They probably could be too if they wanted to, but you get the impression they really don't. They are staunchly indie and underground. They signed in the end to a really small indie label called Melodic, that has no other rock act on it's books. They released their debut single on limited edition 7 inch vinyl only (1000 copies, I ended up getting mine at the Rough Trade shop in London) and they still only play very small venues, especially in Manchester.
I saw them play my local Bierkeller with Bloc Party last year, what a cool gig. that really will be one to look back on in years to come.

I have their debut single and a couple of other crappy 4 track recordings. I would judge them more on the single, that's much closer to the feedback filled live experience.

mike, bloc party are playing that same club on the 27th, should i check these guys out also? the last band i tried to like that had an annoying voice was that steriogram from NZ. i liked that "walkie-talkie man" song but a hole album of his whiny-screamy voice was irritating.
what about "dogs die in hot cars" or whatever that band is called.

It's nothing like that, it's not even annoying. Let's face it, there is always someone who doesn't like everyone's voice, even Frank.
Anyway, yeah definitely go and see them, though they are one of those bands that sound even better on record, due to their sound.

Mike (HPM specifically, but any Mike will do), did you ever hear the Golden Virgins? They're from Sunderland, they released one of my favourite albums last year.
