Don't Panic

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I've been freaking out about this movie coming out, and now there is a trailer premier on the front page of www.amazon.com !

Direct link here: http://images.amazon.com/media/imdb/01/ads/hhgttg42/AmazonFilms.swf

I'm not sure what I think of some of the character casting, and the lack of a second head on Zaphod is a let-down, but I'm more than willing to suspend any judgements until after I've seen it. Only 50 pages to go on my current book, then I'm going back and reading all the books again.

I. CAN'T. WAIT.

http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/main.html

Anyone planning to see this?

Wow I didn't even know there's a movie! Kind of exciting but also scary. There's a great chance this will more or less suck. As compared to the books.

Because Herbie fans would lynch them.

If I saw a new Herbie movie coming out and it featured a new beetle I'd picket the theatre.

OK I just saw the trailer and now I'm even more scared. Arthur seems kinda wrong (I always thought he was more sad-cynical-confused and not cute-goofy-sad-confused like in the movie. Can't really judge after only seeing the trailer though). And it there is ANY kind of romance between Arthur an Trillian I WILL become very dangerous.

The radio play use to be standard programming on public radio stations in the US. I remember many evenings riding home from school in our family car listening to it on the radio.

Hey I was thinking exactly the same. I always considered Futurame to be some kind of a Hitchhikers Guide "rip-off", if that's not a word too strong.

The TV series (at least, the UK one, I don't know if you're referring to the same...) was awesome. Obviously, not having been born when it aired originally, I only saw the reruns, but if you like your sci-fi seriously low-budget, this is the place to be.

the 5th part is called "mostly harmless", and is unfortunately not as good as the others, but very good nonetheless....
there's even a 6th part of the trilogy as well, which is a very short story that really has nothing to do with much else....
well it's a young zaphod if i remember correctly.....
yes, "young zaphod plays it safe" is what it's called

but of course, it was written quite a long time ago, as douglas adams died a few years ago.

Indeed Simon the series was awesome, I have it on my list at Amazon. I am gonna rent it before I go and see this new film. I remember loving the series when it was first aired though, so no doubt they will mess it up with the new film.

I must read the books sometime.

Yeah Mike, I really recommend that you do as soon as you can, the books are definitely worth reading.
I remember loving the tv series, and the radio show, but nothing could compare to the books. Which is partly the reason I'm not too worried if this new movie might have slight suckage - nothing could ever harm them.

It's going to be hard to not expect other characters from The Office to appear randomly throughout the movie. For instance: will they be sitting in far off dim places, making pained awkward expressions at each other in the Restaurant at the End of the Universe?

There is only one Office character in it isn't there? Or are there more in smaller roles?

How many books are there Apl? I need to get a move on and read them and watch the original series again before this film comes out. I must say that from the trailer of the film, it looks very different from the T.V series. I think I liked the fact that the special effects were rubbish the first time around. We'll see I guess.

Mike, I wouldn't worry about finishing the series. Once you get going, its hard to stop. I've been excited for this since the original trailer they've had up for about two months, the one with just the exploding earth. Geez, this is going to be fun, I hope.

Doesn't Mostly Harmless say something about Arthur and Trillian and the endless miles of the last two known survivors of Earth? It's a brief mention.

I confess I can't really remember, so it's possible. I only read Mostly Harmless once. Of course Arthur did have a crush on Trillian, but if they ever had something I am sure it was only because of the situation of being the only two living humans. You know, if you were the last man on Earth...

it has been a while since I read Mostly Harmless but i think its about the same time Arthur is introduced to a certain new female in his life by Trillian (I'm trying not to give a major plot point out to those that haven't read it yet). On the same subject in Life, the Universe and Everything, the plot hinges on the fact that Trillian chooses to stick with Arthur instead of Zaphod.

I'm looking forward to the film.
There will be differences, but Douglas Adams was always updating the story with every change of media, so I'll keep an open mind.

The Young Zaphod story is in "The Salmon of Doubt"

If you've only read the books though, the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary phases of the radio series are a must, if only for share and enjoy http://www.zootle.net/afda/share-and-enjoy.shtml

Zaphod only has one head? That's just WRONG. Isn't that his only real defining physical characteristic (aside from the third arm)?

I've read the entire series several times. Not as many times as I've read most of the Oz books, but still quite a lot. Haven't heard the radio show or seen the BBC TV series, though.

Sure, it has the possibility of sucking but if you read the comments of the screenwriter, he seems to be aware of the pitfalls of trying to take Douglas Adams to the big screen. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.

Besides, Zooey Deschanel is my pretend celebrity girlfriend, and she'd be cross with me if I didn't go to one of her flicks.

And he wasn't the sole screenwriter. The bulk of it was taken from Douglas' final screen play, and the new guy just came in and filled in the holes. He sounds pretty competent, though, as do the directors. And the cast seems pretty dead on. I have no serious concerns about this film, to be honest.

Cool! I just finished the 'book' and am now reading the "Restaurant At The End of the Universe" collection. Zaphod needs two heads... it's sort of critical given his self-inflicted (at least so far as I know) brain surgery. I'll check this out when I get home.

How does the radio play compare to the book?

I've seen production shots with the two heads/three arms. In this version the head is a little more flexible, I believe. It spends less time out there than the shoddy second head from the BBC television series.
