I just saw the movie a few hours ago. I liked it overall, but there were some things I really didn't like. If you want to read my long-ass, spoiler-filled review, you can go here.

Thanks for the heads up! I almost posted to this asking if anyone had seen it yet.

Glad you liked it overall. I was hoping it wouldn't be a complete dud.

The spoiler warning was for the purposes of steering away people who didn't want plot elements given away, not an indication that I did a detailed plot description. Sorry if I gave the wrong idea.

I definetly want to see this. I've never heard the radio series or read the book, and I only saw bits of the TV series. It's getting good reviews, and apparently it's quite faithful to Douglas Adams source material.

You have to give adaptations a little bit of licence.

I don't think there's really a definitive version of the story anyway. It's the books that I'm most familiar with, but it was a radio show first. Every version has had some changes, although the story tends to remain basically the same.

I am looking forward to it. Gonna watch the T.V series again first though, to catch up. That reminds me I must go and get it off my mate.

i saw the movie this avo' after having read all the books about 20 times each over the years.
and the movie was ok.
sure, it's never going to be as good as the books, since douglas adams is such an incredibly clever and witty man, but i really enjoyed it nonetheless.
but the thing that suprised me was that it wasn't actually funny. the book has me in stiches, but it just didn't transfer well to the big screen in that respect.
and the plot's rather different, but thats to be expected.

so my rating would be a 3.5 out of 5.

Is it really that different? Douglas Adams wrote the screenplay, and apparently they stuck rather close to it, although of course he was aware that he would have to adapt it for the movies(apparently he had years of trials and tribulations getting it onscreen).

well lets just say that a major part of the story doesn't happen in the books at all.
makes sense though.

yes, marvin was very good...woefully underused.

I wasn't sure what to think about Marvin's design, but looking back, I guess it was pretty good. I'm still not all that fond of the way they did Zaphod's second head, though.

I've said this elsewhere, but a large part of the comedy from the books is in the narrative, I think, which is definitely the most difficult part to transfer into a movie. That's probably why it's not funny. Haven't seen it yet, but I'd like to before I go to Europe and it costs far more money. :)

M.J. SIMPSON
(writer, author of Hitchhiker: A Biography of Douglas Adams)

"I think it is interesting, and a little sad, that Douglas's name has been so low-key among all the publicity and hype for this movie. The trailers just said "From the celebrated best-selling novel" – but omitted to mention who wrote it. On the other hand, it may be best for Douglas Adams's reputation that he isn't linked too closely with the film. Despite what many people are saying, he didn't write it. He wrote a screenplay which Disney rejected, then he died, and then another writer came in and wrote a new screenplay incorporating material from Douglas's version. WGA rules mean that both writers are credited, though they never met.

A much better tribute to Douglas is the new, final radio series based on the fourth and fifth Hitchhiker books. The reason those books don't work very well is because they were rushed so there is almost no editing. Douglas needed a good editor or producer to make his work really shine and what Dirk Maggs has done with these final eight scripts is extraordinary and exactly what an editor would have done with the books had there been time."

Oh deary me, I was reminded of this the other day. Haven't seen the film yet, but I'm trying desperately to remain open minded about it. If any of you haven't heard the original radio series but loved the TV series then I suggest purchasing. It's without doubt the best medium for the Guide. And Simon Jones is Arthur Dent (literally; Adams based the character on him )

I saw it this afternoon and had some major major issues with it, and I don't just mean your usual geek-out nit-picky issues either, I mean issues.

The ending for a start! and what was the Malkovich character all about? Deep thought was a world of wrong, Arthur Dent was also wrong

pleasantly surprised by Mos Def though.

I agree about the ending. I didn't like the look of Deep Thought, although I guess I can see what they were going for. I DID like Humma Kavula (the Malkovich character), though, primarily for his sermon.

There's a Dirk Gently TV show?!?? [10 minutes in, it's very good]

Has anybody read the books?

[The Hitchhiker's movie was SO disappointing.]

Only 4 episodes created and it was not renewed. That's worse than Faulty Towers.

i saw a couple of the dirk gently episodes and I also thought it was pretty good. now that you say it was cancelled after 4 episodes, that makes sense as I was expecting more to be on tv, but they never turned up.
pity it was cancelled. it definitely had something going for it imo.

the books are very good. different to hitchhikers, but i enjoy them as much.
the 2 episodes of the tv show i saw did not follow any storylines i remembered from the books.

recommend tracking the books down.

all i can say, thank god for polio! brian
