Who else here is? I play guitar righthanded but most everything else, left. I suppose I could write with the right if I practised enough. Being southie used to be quite frowned upon by people who like to frown upon things, and still is in some parts. In Ireland up till 20 years ago or so, teachers would strike pupils on the left hand if they caught them using it to write, or put you in a seat next to a wall with the biggest pupil in the class on your left so youīd have to use the right. A friend from Germany went to a Steiner school and each pupil was given a preciouslooking stone to hold in their left hand during class and if they dropped it to write they didnīt get to keep the stone (she lost hers, attagirl). The weirdest one I heard was my Morroccan flatmate, when he was young his father put his left hand in a sock, tied it with rope at the wrist and then tied that to his beltloop for two months during which he lost 4 kilos. As he was telling me this he was eating with his left.

I am a leftie and proud of it. It's good to be different.
I also play guitar left handed, though most other two handed activities I perform in is supposed to be the right handed way. I don't agree with this in a lot of cases though. Eating for example. To hold your fork in your left hand, and your knife in your right is said to be the right handed method. This seems wrong to me 'cos you use your fork more than your knife most of the time(unless you eat steak), so surely you would want it in your good hand (in my case, my left).

I think fork in left hand is the European style. Fork in right for us 'merkins (except while cutting). The only possible reason I could know this is because my grandmother gave me the Emily Post "Book of Etiquette" when I was about 11. sheesh! It came in handy once, filling out addresses for notice cards to family that we eloped. A big no-no in itself it seems, but at least we used proper addressing etiquette.
My mother and stepmother are left-handed. My mom and I used to bump elbows a lot at the table. She told me similar stories of torture in school, when teachers tried to make lefties conform. It still happens, but more rare these days. |

Have you tried it the other way round? It's not an improvement. You need your stronger hand for cutting stuff; for example, if you're left hand is weaker, it's not very easy to cut a steak holding your knife in your left hand. Of course, it's years of indoctrination and practise as well, but I guess that's how the system evolved.
Apart from that: you know the word 'sinister' relates to the left? Makes sense to me...

Hehe, that reminds me of my mother, grandmother and I. We used to clash elbows when we sat next to each other at the dinner table.
So I guess I use the US version of the left handed method of eating. That sounds better than the European right handed method.

I use my right hand to cut, and that is my weaker hand. It's not like your weaker hand is incapable of cutting. In fact I think it would hardly make any difference really. I think it's more about the feel of it, and getting used to it. I don't actually do a lot of cutting with the food I eat, it's more fork work.
I dunno, it's all connected to how our brains work I guess. And god only knows how they work.

I am left-handed, but I can't play guitar, so it doesn't really make me interesting.

for a Righty, it's uncomfortable sitting next to a Lefty while eating. Lots of elbows with one's dinner...

do you remember when erasermate pens started coming out in the early 80's, they were not very good and lefthanders would smudge the paper with the ink. our school banned them for everybody! lefthanders just ruin it for everyone else i tell ya!
btw, generally lefties are more creative and imaginative than righthanders, and righties are more calculative and reasonable. it's got something to do with left-brain/right-brain.

I'm perfectly ambidextrous for most of my everyday activities (except writing because I had to 'choose a hand' to write). At the age of 12 I was even the object of a scientific study, for that reason. Btw, the study concluded that I was an aberration of nature, more or less :)

The other guitar player in my band - the lead player - the Hendrix freak, main singer...
He is left-handed.
Pretty cool to not have to worry about butting headstocks on a tight gig.
Bass player is another story. He wields a J-bass like a club. |

I write and throw a dart with my left hand only.
I throw a ball, use a snooker cue and use scissors with my right hand only.
I am equally good with both feet at football.

Really? That's a pretty critical job to trust to old lefty.
How many people wear their watch on their opposite arm (righties with their watch on their left arm)? I think most do (I don't), which doesn't make much sense to me. But, I'm told it's because the watch gets less banged up if it's on the less used arm.

I must be honest and admit that I am better with my left foot. I must remain honest and declare that my left foot is better than Platini's. I am a genius on the football pitch.

Actually they didn't say that exactly, but that's what I personally deduced, rightly or wrongly. Btw, at the time of that study (the late 70s), even lefties were still considered aberrations of nature. |

I'm right-handed, and I used to wear my watch on my right arm, but I've since started wearing it on my left arm instead.

I changed to my right for a short while some time ago now. I can't remember exactly why I did it, but I think it may have had something to do with not wanting the watch to get so scratched or damaged in general. I figured if I put it on the wrist of the arm that I don't use as often, then it should be more protected.

and I like lefties, by the way. married one. hence the elbows with dinner comment.:) |
