Isn't Frank talking about Shemp when he sings that line, though? Curly didn't have "slicked-back hair," and I believe Samuel was Shemp's real name. (Curly's was Jerome, as mentioned at the very beginning of the song.)

Hope this helps from a stooge web site

Shemp wasn't the same as Curly, but he never tried to be. Both were hilarious doing their own characters. Curly was the bewildered, easily-scared, child-like one with the huge appetite and whiney attitude. Shemp tried to make like he was worldly and tough, until he folded up like an out-of-tune accordian. Heep-eep-eep-eep-eep!

Ok Sugar, here goes. ( i watched ALOT of stooges in highschool and college--then went to the library to look stuff up--libraries are great!)

look here first, or to refresh your memory: http://frankblack.net/songs/db.asp?mode=release-song-details&releaseID=102&songID=25#references

Two Reelers--the "shorts" (movies) the Stooges made were shown in theatres and used two reels.

Jerome--Curly. He disliked having to shave his head for The Three Stooges shorts b/c he thought it made him less attractive to women. His actual nickname was Babe. When he was young (teenager, I think), he shot himself in the leg and limped until he died...hence the pain.

Sam--Shemp. He was the original Third Stooge. He left b/c he felt a lot of pressure to perform and really disliked the Stooges' first manager, Ted Healy (who was an ass). He came back as the Third Stooge after Curly left. and yes, he make the heep heep heep heep sound.

Louis--Larry. Burned his hand with acid while young and the doctor advised him to take up the violin to exercise his pingers. He was the go-to guy for the "violence" from Moe. Very underrated but genius. btw, he had a permanent callous on the left side of his face where Moe gave him the business.

Moses--Moe. The backbone of the trio. He loved doing the shorts and didn't want them to quit when Shemp, then curly, then shemp left so he got a Joe (Joe besser) and another Joe (Curly Joe DeRita) when they left to do the shorts and to make the Stooges' movies.

Mr. White--Jules White, a producer of the shorts. I'm not sure what the "bad report" was...prob. something like they asked for raises or somethin'.

The stooges, as I remember, NEVER got a raise in pay from the studio after 1936 or something like that--a cash cow the studio milked.

there's a start. for more info, go right to the source and ask the horse: http://www.threestooges.com/bios/

go. and learn. then come back and learn us.

:)

This is one of the all-time great Frank Black songs. Seeing it live last year -- solo acoustic -- really brought its genius out for me. What I was noticing today, though, is how crazy the counting is between 0:56 and 1:20, especially toward the end of that stretch. Can anybody (fbc?) help me out with at least the time signature? When I try to count it, my mind boggles. It's as if it's freeform, but I don't think it is.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Thanks for the info, toba. Oliver Hardy was also nicknamed Babe. Shemp replacing Curly always seemed a bit strange, although I think he was a good comedy actor too! I though Mr. White would have been a guy from the censor board or something!

"Aw yeah, that's the good stuff!"

When I first heard it I thought Mr White was a reference to Reservoir Dogs, you know with the references to violence and all. The Tarantino movie was only a couple of years old at that time.

Has everyone seen FB playing this song on the Christmass DVD. It's really powerful. Here's an mp3

I need to listen to the track, coasty, but just thinking about the song i think it's best to not count, just feel. This song is HUUUUGE, and to me is one of the songs I'd play to aliens if they really wanted to know the side of Frank Black i loved.

I'll give it a listen.

Yeah, that drives me crazy.
It's amazing how the band can stay together, cos it sounds like either a new time signature each bar or they're just making shit up.
Awesome either way.

But not really.

edit: I really have to get rid of that sig.
