I start this thread by braving Hustler and Maxxim jokes, but I would be interested in learning what you guys read for magazines.
I love love love Bust, parts of which can be glimpsed at bust.com,
and I think that Esquire is cleverly edited and entertaining, tho
a tad too men's-fashion-centric for me.
Tell me about your favorite magazines!

Nothing exotic: Newsweek, Sports Illustarted, Fine Cooking
And professional journals (with the clever titles) like: Animal Behaviour, Behavioral Ecology, Ecology, The American Naturalist |

I think the only print magazine I regularly read now is Record Collector, and then only because I write for them. That said, they have a pretty good and comprehensive reviews section. I stopped reading most music magazines not because they annoyed me particularly, but I discovered I just didn't care what a particular band did on tour, or what's in a certain artist's fridge.

i read Film Comment. that's the only magazine i subscribe to. i like looking at Dwell to fantasize about places i could never afford and i also get Best Friends magazine, which is this no-kill animal shelter in Utah that i gave money to.. and now i get the magazine.

but nothing with any real regularity

I like Word magazine... I usually buy Uncut when I'm in an Anglo country. I found the december '04 issue in NZ, the Pixies story was full of the usual crap, but the FB quotes at the beginning were priceless.

"spin" more often than "rolling stone" (really depends who is on the cover). i kind of collect them. i have like 400 magazines from 89-95. mostly rolling stones and spins. 50 or so "details", i have a bunch of NME's and Melody Makers from 90-93 (but heaven knows where they are). i enjoy reading details the best and i hate to be cliche but i really like playboy for the articles and interviews. i especially like the author's short storieses. the sickest one i ever read was the chuck palahniuk story "guts" circa late 2003 about an underwater masterbater who basically prolapses because of the swimming pools filter suction. and, before anybody says anything, yes i look at thge pictures and that's why most of the playboys don't end up in my collection. ;)

I am addicted to printed matter. The list is rather long but here goes. Kerrang, Rock Sound, Metal Hammer, Terroriser, Blender, Uncut, NME, Spin, Creative Review, Design Week, Mac User (if I'm feeling clever), Vogue (both US and UK editions, the US one solely for Jeffery Steingarten's writing), Elle Decor, US edition of Esquire (good writing, the UK one is just too pathetic), Details used to be brilliant but the writing isn't as good as what it once was - though I'll still indulge occasionally along with the odd Vanity Fair.
Shine - nothing wrong with Playboy, damn fine publication, and somewhere I'd love to work - I used to be on their mailing list and read (yes, read) their articles all the time, hell, I even used to read the articles in Gallery and Fox when I was on their mailing lists.
I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A

Punk Planet favorite music magazine ever - great interviews, the writing covers music very well (not just punk) but also has writers and reporters covering tons of other things that fall under the punk ethos.
Harper's Magazine my favorite overall magazine
Kentucky Explorer pretty location specific, but it's an amazing magazine. lots of history, old articles and old pictures, family photos, pictures and letters sent in by older Kentuckians, some of which can make you cry or laugh your ass off in the bathroom, which is fun.
Mother Earth great info for eco-friendly living, organic gardening, living off the earth, etc.
National Geographic
Scientific American
Astronomy We let our subscription run out, but I would get it again once we can afford a good telescope.

Yeah, it's a real pain to navigate, despite the clutter-free lifestyle and aesthetic it pushes. I'd never fork over my money for it, but I love reading it...for free.
Which is another thing I love about O, the Oprah magazine (scary, you say?). The index is always on the third page so you can just open it and boom! find out which page everything is on. I think that's brilliant editing, very reader-friendly. I stopped reading Vanity Fair because I could not make myself leaf through dozens and dozens of pages of ads to arrive at the index.
While I'm here, another two thumbs-up for Esquire. Don't you guys read it?

I find that a lot of organic eco stuff is geared toward trendoid yuppies
versus people who are earnestly committed to saving the planet.

Yeah, I know what you mean OBW, a lot of the products they advertise and write about are kind of irrelevant to their main stated mission, like the composters you can buy -why buy one? insane.
Also, they don't go into detail where it really matters. But there are some good articles on gardening and energy saving nonetheless. I would love to find a better magazine -do you have any suggestions?
edit: also, I know you do organic gardening Scott - do you buy all of your seeds from that family you mentioned? Because that seed saver's program is pretty great. You might want to check it out if you haven''t already. We've been very happy with them, and their service is doing a lot of good I think (imho). |

Well, I really enjoy Countryside and Small Stock Journal. It's layout is very simple, the content practical/useful and it is made up of reader submitted articles/stories.
Also, if you're not freaked-out by the rolie-polie, creepy-crawlies ..Worm Digest. (Tips on building and maintaining worm bins for composting.)

I've bought from Johnny's Selected Seeds a couple of times, though they have a pretty weak selection.
Dave's Garden has a pretty good mail-order seed catalog review section.

Thanks OBW -we have been thinking of starting a little worm factory for a while actually. Not at all freaked out by creepy crawlies -I have always collected/loved bugs. Don't see how you can be a (organic) gardener or live in the country and not get along with em.
I will check out those you mentioned. Always looking for better info. I assume you guys are familiar with http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/ ? GREAT resource.

I buy way too many magazines. Things I buy regularly are Vanity Fair, Elle, Marie Claire, Black Book, Bust, Spin (depending on what the cover story is). I have subscriptions to Entertainment Weekly and Vogue.

We have way too many magazines too. And never throw anything away. I'm afraid we're going to turn into those kind of people.
Plus, I don't spend enough time in the place where reading magazines matters the most (one thing I have a weird envy of men for), so I never get to read all of a magazine before the next one shows up, or ever really. |
