To continue Kathryn's thread, what was the best concert that you've been, but without mentioning the Pixies and Frank Black. Mine was Nick Cave, back in 1989...

Ooooh tough one. I've got 3 to try and choose between.
Eighties Matchbox the last time I saw them at the Cockpit (the night I discovered the ultimate viewing spot) the tightest and slickest show I've ever seen them do. Mastodon the first time I saw them headline their own show - jaw on the floor stuff. I love their albums but to see them live is another thing entirely - they commanded the crowd - utterly crazy drum work behind a huge stack that you cannot believe and guitars that make me crazy.
And then there is the craziness that is the Dillinger Escape Plan, again at the Cockpit, November last year. Their shows are something quite primal and maybe they have to be my best show for the fact that I think they are the ultimate live band. I believe you can go to one of their shows without even liking anything they have done and still grin like an idiot as you watch them fly all over the place, screaming, maybe even blowing fire if you are lucky. The rules of gravity seems to defy Ben, their lead guitarist and Greg the lead singer is one of the built like the proverbial brick shithouse, add to this they occasionally break into bits of technically brilliant jazz in the middle of all the mayhem and you've got one hell of an entertaining show.
Please please let them tour this year - I plan to drag as many people as I can to their shows just so I can see the smiles creep over faces and watch them become converts.
I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A California Dreamin' on such a winter's day

The delagados and Six by seven some time back at wolves varsity, 6x7 played a set and it must have been around the time that the delgados released peloton, by 6x7, there set was stunning that I was speechless, my wife thought that I had hated it as I never spoke all the way through, it was mainly the guitarist, following them, the delgados came on and that sealed it, singularly the best gig outside of the pixies I had ever witnessed.

Such a difficult but good question!
Talking Heads, Radio City Music Hall, 1983.
Elvis Costello, Flushing Meadows, 1982.
Too many Ramones shows to pick a favorite!
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

Morrissey last year in Boston.
One of the four Liz Phair shows I have seen, in the fall of 1998.
Elvis Costello in the summer of 1999. Mostly b/c my best friend loves him and we pushed right up to the barricade and were in the front row. I was mostly happy for living vicariously through her.

Eeeewwww Wolverhampton, the number of gigs i've seen there and the number of times i've had to go ick as i do the train station to civic hall dash. Though it's a lot better nowadays.. anyway I witter...
Best gig was I think REM at Stirling castle, queued for four hours with a crazy group of scots/scouses and was middle-front row in this open air castle gig. I'd already seen REM twice and they were bloody marvelous both times but this was absolutely awesome. It was the Up tour so the stage visuals were great, the people I had met were really nice and we were all so happy and smiley and huggy. It was a warm and balmy day with a lovely sporadic breeze and bright sunshine. They played for nearly two hours and just as the sun was setting played sweetness follows and as I think I have mentioned before in the instrumental break I waved at michael stipe (c'mon I was probably only 17) and he smiled back at me. I nearly passed out (I love the stipe) they played old tunes and new tunes and it was just the loveliest of atmospheres so laid back and friendly. I took lots of photo's (they came out so well) and if I could I'd scan them in to show you. They played a massive encore and everyone was grinning by the time the show finished.
It's hard to pick from the rest of them a second and a third, this one was pretty stand out though.

I'm going to go in order of what I can remember.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood (I"m serious) Orpheum in Bean town
Sugarcubes - Orpheum in Boston
Billy idol with the Cult Worchester Centrum
Dinosaur Jr at the Roxy in Boston
Heretix - Avalon in Boston
Superchunk - Middleast in Cambridge
PJ Harvey with Ben Harper - Orpheum in Boston. This one is remembered as one of the best.
The Cult at the Santa Barbara Bowl. I've seen the cult many times, but the last time was the best of the bunch. I never saw any of their 80's shows though which I believe would have been the best.

It's one of two.
Tanya Donelly, summer 2004 @ Bush Hall, London. Quiet is the new loud as previously discussed, and Tanya was in such fine voice hackles were raised all over the place. Goosebumperific.
Groop Dogdrill, summer 2000 @ Joiners Arms, Southampton. Talk about Polar opposite. This was just after they'd released 'Every Six Seconds' and I knew every single song they played (I was young, this kind of thing is important). They rocked so much...

tough one..
in no order:
NIRVANA - Hollywood Paladium, 1991 (opening for Dinosaur Jr.) - this was right before Nevermind came out, even though we had a secret copy of Nevermind somehow.. they blew Dinosaur Jr. off the stage. should have been headlining. i went on to get kicked out of the club later in the evening for crowd surfing (ah, to be young again)..
BEULAH - Fillmore in San Francisco, 2004 - (Dios Malos opening, another band i love) this was their farewell show, before breaking up forever.. sad and fun. i love these guys. my girlfriend and i got invited to the after party at the singers apartment becasue we were talking to one of the band members.. that was even more fun than the concert.
FLAMING LIPS - Hollywood Palladium, 2000 - (Soft Bulletin tour) - fake blood, people in animal suits, confetti, film clips of women with perfect breasts.. these are the elements of an excellent concert. i remember being really drunk on Jack Daniels that night with my friend from Australia and we got in to a confetti fight after the show with these super cute girls (confetti fights are always the way to a womans heart).. after the show we went out to bars and still had confetti in our hair..
there are others, but i'll just pick three
(but, i have to give the Devo show in 1997 an honorable mention)
(ok, and the Breeders in 1992 at the Wiskey. one of their first shows i believe)

Not totally sure, but a few that stood out for me were:
Hypnotic Clambake in Indiana, Pennsylvania (1999)-I really knew nothing about the band beforehand, but the show was great. A fair amount of jamming, which I normally don't like, but it worked well with their sound. I ended up buying an album afterwards.
Either of the two Camper Van Beethoven concerts I attended. At the first one, someone sprayed David Lowery with Mace, but the show up to that point was a lot of fun. At the second one, the sound wasn't that great, and it was kind of difficult to hear David singing, but it was still amazing.
They Might Be Giants at Joe's Pub on Valentine's Day 2003-I've been to several TMBG shows, but this one was my favorite. It was a small venue, we were able to sit down, and the band played quite a few songs they don't usually play.

All of you forumers have been to some great shows. If I was a few years older and could get into all the great 18+ shows in the city that I would like to, I bet I could also share some great stories. Seeing as how I have to discount the Pixies in this equation, I think the best show that I've ever been to would have to be the Unicorns show I attended last winter, in December I believe, at the Bowery Ballroom in New York.

Yeah, they are the worst. And I don't really understand how making a show 18 years of age or older will increase profits that much. At least with 21+, there is the whole alchol thing, that only people over the age of 21 can buy alcohol, which presents more revenue, but 18+ just confuses me.

Definitely Brian Wilson, October 16 of last year. How could it get any better than SMiLE live?
I hope I get to see Tome Waits live sometime in my life. Judging from all the bootlegs I have, he is an incredible live performer,

yeah, 18+ doesn't make any sense, now that you mention it. what's the point?
when i was in Baltimore there was a club that had 18-and-under nights only. which was kind of a cool way of retaliating against the old people. but i doubt the club made much money off of sodas and snicker bars

I think the closest I've seen here is a no unaccompanied under 15 year old notice on the back of some tickets but I've never seen an over 18's that really is weird, I guess from a money making sense it's clever practice to only let people in who are likely to buy your overpriced drinks but from the music sense you don't have to be drunk/over 18 to appreciate a band. How very rude! I'd have been one pissed off teenager if I wasn't allowed into gigs.

but here you have to be 21 to buy drinks. so that rationale doesn't make sense either. it's like, why not just do 21 and over? at gigs here, if you're 21 and over, and you want to drink, you have to get a wrist band at the door. which doesn't completely prevent underaged people from getting drinks. but nothing really does unless people are really strict.

maybe there's a chance the band will do swear words or make rude comments and that sort of thing is inappropriate for the under 18's because we all know they're innocent little delicates *cough* no I agree, it makes no sense
i want answers damnit.

Yeah they have the over-18's thing over here too. Obviously our legal drinking age is 18, so it's the equivalent of your over 21 shows.

The answer to this age problem is simple: let's not sell alcohol during concerts! That way, everybody can get in and no drunken fucks will yell stupid things at performers and/or annoy people in the crowd. |

You got to see Blind Melon Shiny?! And KOK you seen the Sugarcubes?!
One that I missed and will always kick myself in the ass for is Jane's Addiction. :(
Hmmm, I'd have to think more but... again seeing Radiohead in a small campus pub for the Bends was amazing. Weezer in a small campus pub in Calgary for Pinkerton was also really cool. A few Tragically Hip concerts because there is such a cool vibe at them. The Cult with GnR opening here in 1987 was definitely the loudest concert I've ever been too.
