I started this thread and now I wish I didn't, because I'm so jealous of some people...
So this is for when you're feeling happy again And this is for when you're feeling sad And this is for when you feel... Something

rita, you've changed.. where did you learn all this hatred from?
yeah, i wasn't expecting that much since it was a whole "reunion" show and all.. but i was absolutely blown away. they had so much energy it was amazing. all of the synchronized outfit-changes.. and robot dancing. too good. they were above and beyond anything i ever expected. really gave the crowd their moneys worth.
during the show Mark Mothersbaugh jumped in the crowd and floated on people / slam danced for a while, then went back on stage. it was great

Floop, I am working on letting this jealousy go. It's an ugly, ugly emotion.
Floop, I am sincerely happy for you that you got to see Devo.

If I didnt know better I would say people arent listing the best gigs they wenty to but perhaps the coolest. Maybe. Nirvana may be a pretty good one but for I reckon the family Cat at the market tavern in kiddeminster was better, Devo? Schmevo, how about blue aeroplanes at burberries? The sugarcubes? Pah, The wedding present and cud in coventry!

It could be argued that you are the one trying to be cool by shunning the more well known acts and picking lesser known ones. Looks like music snobbery to me. Hmmm? Hmmm?

Nobody is going to argue about Cud, they were never cool. The Wedding Present are reasonably ace though.

For the moment Kathryn saw the best shows. Talking Heads back in '83... That must have been beyond cool. My best/coolest gigs: * Bowie, '97, Montreal - just cause I love Bowie * Geraldine Fibbers, '97, Montreal - great vibe, crazy guitar work by Nels Cline, Bob Bert was there opening with the Chrome Cranks and I took pictures of everyone that I cherish. * Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, '98, Paris - my first jSbX gig and the best one, I jumped on stage, couldn't figure out what was going on with all the lights and the noise, jumped back in the crowd and then realized they had destroyed all their equipment while I was up there. * Guitar Wolf, 2002, Paris * Wampas, 2003, Paris - best French live band ever * Rolling Stones, '96, Longchamp racetrack, Paris - this one isn't "cool" but it's one of my first gigs and I loved it.

Midnight Oil, Ellis Park, Jo'burg '93 or '94 made a huge impression on me. Probably because I haven't seen too many international live bands up to then.

i guess i can understand why you might say that Domestiques, with Nirvana and all.. but those are my honest to god top 3. Beulah though.. no one even knows who they are (their loss).. and Flaming Lips.. it's not like they're THAT cool or hard-to-see.. (i could name more "cool" shows i've been to, but those were my favorites)
i hereby deny your allegations!

You know those were three random acts that I have seen and probably none of them would feature in my top 5 best gigs ever. I was just using it to highlight a point, and try and be a little humourous at the same time, in reality maybe the best bands that I have seen arent that well know, delgados, hefner, and million dead but they are still great. That isnt to say that I havent seen some huge huge artists and think that they were only barely passable, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Jonathon Richman, The ramones, rage against the machine and Willie Nelson. Its all about getting them on the right day under the right circumstances I think.

And small venues. Its the best when you can see a band you love in a small place.

agreed - almost always the smaller the venue the better the gig. the aforementioned sufjan stevens gig was extra cool because i was like 3 feet from him, and i got to sit there and enjoy my favorite draft beer (yuengling). plus the club holds no more than 150 people and the sound is top notch

well I stand by REM because it was a relatively small gig (not that small but I saw them in two arena venues before this one - manchester evening news arena and earls court) so compared to the other two and it was faultless and outdoors and lovely.
But next to that it'd be bands like gomez (which are not cool) or mansun (still not cool) and the super furry animals (they're cool) who were excellent live in tiny venues, they were just really fun gigs. I saw radiohead twice and both times was terrible, one outdoors gig (I was ill and there were too many people) and one arena gig (ugh) but then I saw FB & TC's in a small venue in 2003 and that was not good (venues fault not the band)

Reckon the best gig I've been to was Fields of the Nephilim at the Venue in Edinburgh( I think??) about 1988/89. They'd just released The Nephilim album, I had no idea about most of the songs, but it was just awesome. Carl McCoy with his Freddy glove, yellow contacts and covered in a couple of pounds of flour was awesome.
It was really just a melee which I dived into and recovered from every so often. Oh, the music was great too :-)

You don't know how good it is to find a fellow Delgados fan on here.
I can't believe you would doubt why anyone would put Nirvana on there. I don't think Nirvana are considered a cool band at all, not anymore. For the most part, if you saw them, you were impressed. Unless you already disliked them but then that goes with every band for the most part.

Listen Buster Top-Shop, you accuse me of liking low-rent Britpop knock-offs any more, I'll come round and stick your copy of Kula Shaker's greatest hits so far down your throat you'll be leaving little bits of Sanskrit in the toilet bowl for weeks to come.
Although, it will aid you in adopting the favoured Manc swagger so beloved of so many awful bands.
