I have now listened to "Dog in the Sand" three times in a row over the last two and a half hours. And you know what, it was great the first time I played it at 5:00. I was better when I played it again at 6:00. When I hit the play button again for the third time to start this newest cycle, it has sounded the very best.

This is such a different album. You listen to it once and you think, hmm, kind of reserved, not too special (like the Pixies are earlier solo stuff). Then you start picking up new nuances each time and different little musical imputs and before you know it, you are hanging on each stanza and chord.

So, did Frank pretty much hate Kim and Dave, but like Joey? I notice Joey played on this one. I also remember a Frank interview before the reunion when FB said he would not mind regrouping as the Pixies, if it were just him and Joey.

hate? who knows.
only a few know the real truth. we got the rumours and myths.

before and the conception of the band, one was a friend, the others, a rhythm section. it's all about the music.
were they all ever friends, not sure.

You know what.. I was listening to Dog In the Sand today too along with lots of live and studio albums. I was kinda piecing stuff together now that I know more...supposedly... about Frank Black. I did wonder the same thing as you, but then I am like, that song can be about anyone?? Who knows?? I think sometimes the good thing about songs/poems/art it is so open for interpretation.

Joey played on lots of Frank's records, right? Self-titled, Teenager, Dog in the Sand, that I recall...any others?

How cool! I've also been listening recently to DITS. I luv it more w/ each listen. There are so many nuances, things to savor.

Altho there are a lot more intricate things on the album, the GORGEOUS, Heavenly title cut always gives me chills!

There was once a thread re: ranking FB's albums, and I always felt TOTY was first (Bestest) and "Frank Black" was next bestest.

But I'm "changing my plea".....as Morrissey would say and:

#1)TOTY #2)Doggie In Da Sannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd!

Glad to see some people are discovering Frank & the Cs albums and enjoy them.
Sometimes I wish I was like you, but when I remember the Catholics gigs I went to, I'm defintely glad I knew the songs.

Yeah, i've made the mistake of taking along friends to a gig who have never heard of FB's music, definately never heard of the Catholics.

The highlight of their night?....."that was pretty cool when that guy used a drumstick"

i doubt he "hated" anyone, but think of it this way. dave still opened for FB& the C's alot in '01, '02 and '03. PLUS he sat in with the Catholics once when Scott was sick.

Oh my goodness BrokenFace! Were you at this show too? It was 2002 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Such a strange but fabulous show! I took a pal o' mine that night (he'd never heard Frank's solo stuff) and it was amazing. First it was just Frank, alone for like 30 minutes...then Dave P. finally arrived and they did a few songs on acoustic guitar and steel pedal. Then McCaffrey showed up about thirty minutes after that...then Frank announced he just found out Scott was in jail (jokingly I assumed...I can't remember where he was...sick, or something), so Frank asked from the stage if Dave L. (who had opened with his experiments) would come on down and sit in...and he did, and everyone went nuts. It was a very cool show.

Not to go too far off topic, here, but I still cannot wrap my brain
around the idea that someone can like the Pixies but not
know much about Frank's post-Pixies oeuvre.

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

I am pining for the FBATC's as well. DL'ing live shows mostly. The shows from 2002 and 2003 cover so much territory they really are a great way to feed the FB craving.

Have you heard the four bonus acoustic tracks on the spinART version of DITS?
If you liked the album, and who here doesn't, then these will just blow your mind.

The songs are amazing whoever Frank has by his side, but to me, the most amazing and special thing I've ever heard, is the sound of just his voice and acoustic guitar. It's a beautiful thing to behold.
