Who remembers the The The? I used to listen a lot and I had some records too, and today I found them and wondering what Matt Johnson is doing now...

You should def. give them a listen, HPM...I got into them about 2 years ago, picked up all the albums,etc...they are really a good band to listen to. Throw 'em in the iPod on shuffle and you're good to go!

oh, and def. check out "Hanky Panky." I bought this one about 8 years ago and forgot all about it...it's a great piece of work! (I Saw the Light is amazing!)

great thread rita!!

The The is one of those bands that I can't remember when I started listening, their first album was so great, my sister had it but now I can't find it anymore. I have Mind Bomb and Infected, and after all this time they are still very good.
Thanks for the link Tobafett!

Soul Mining and Hanky Panky are great albums.
We saw The The in Chicago for the Naked Self tour, sometime in 2000 I guess? At the Metro maybe? I must be getting old. Anyway it was a great show.

I *love* the piano solo in "Uncertain Smile"! Soul Mining is just a perfect album. And what a voice - he actually does Hank Senior justice with Hanky Panky....I almost put "Honky Tonkin'", and several songs from Soul Mining on my North American mix, but it was hard to match them up with anything else.

edit: looks like it's going to be a The The afternoon. Thanks Rita

Despite people here liking them, nobody actually knows what they sound like? Weird.

They are unique Homer, I'm listening right now, and they sound like themselves, you should give a listen to understand.

ah The the.
I have to admit that i love the band to bits. I listened to Soul Mining first when i was 24 and then went on to Dusk. Matt Johnson was an artist who was very much ahead of his time (im my humble opinion) and soul mining has some of the best lyrics I have every heard on any album. Would be interested to hear what others think of naked self (personally i love it - weeping walls is an amazing song).

nice one rita!

Wow. The The. It has been a long time since I have spoken about them to anyone. Soul Mining was one of my favorite albums back in the mid to late 80's. I just put a song from it on a mix about three months ago after not listening to them for 10 years. A guy from school, Tom Mech, who was from Chicago turned me on to Matt Johnson. Tom was way into Wolfgang Press and had a lot of interesting bands I had never heard of growing up in Dallas. Thanks Rita...it's always refreshing and exciting to be reminded of something like that.
I think I'll lie here and dream of you...

the the! I agree, thanks Rita for this wonderful reminder of a band that I listened to non-stop through Junior High. Infected has to be my favorite album of theirs. I haven't listened to it in such a long time, and I do believe I will put it on right now and enjoy!

I am not sure they started ALL Rita. They remind me of the Hoodoo Gurus a little and someone else that I can't quite put my finger on right now. They sound very 80's, I don't think it has aged too well, though the songs themselves aren't bad.

I have only listened to seven songs from one album so far, so I have a way to go yet.

i actually listened to dusk last night for the first time in around 6 months - like being reunited with a long lost friend. bluer than midnight is jaw droppingly good. ah the nostalgia :)

All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind
another year older and what have i done?
all my aspirations have shrivelled in the sun
ive been crippled by guilt; blinded by science
ive been waiting for tomorrow all of my life.

Oh Diablo canyon 2 - why can't you be more like Diablo canyon 1?
