I read about these two films today, and thought I would share what I read with you. I know there are some Joy Division fans here, not sure if you knew about this. More likely you knew about the Kurt one.
SHEER JOY
The wife of late JOY DIVISION singer IAN CURTIS has said that the forthcoming film of his life was almost shelved for good.
Celebrated rock photographer Anton Corbijn – most renowned for his work with U2 – has been confirmed as the director of the movie, which has a working title of ‘Control’. Deborah Curtis (Ian’s widow) and former Factory Records boss Anthony Wilson will both have co-producer roles on the film.
Deborah Curtis told NME.COM: "There was a time when I thought it would be better not to make the film at all. But I definitely think we’ve assembled the right people to tell Ian’s story."
The film will be based on Deborah’s book ‘Touching From A Distance’. Curtis committed suicide in 1980, aged just 23. A movie project documenting his troubled life had first been mooted at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, but the Curtis family had never been fully happy with the proposals until now.
Wilson said: "Whenever Hollywood gets involved in the music industry, the end product is invariably shit, apart from a few films – ’24 Hour Party People’ was one of them. Ian’s story is such a sensitive one, we had to get the right people on board to tell it."
Asked how ‘Control’ would differ from ’24 Hour Party People’, which told the story of the rise and fall of Factory Records, Wilson replied: "They want to do the real story of Ian – warts and all. People have many conflicting views as to why Ian actually committed suicide, and this film will maybe reflect some of those views."
The film will be Corbijn’s first feature-length project as a director. The Dutch-born photographer had a long working relationship with the band, photographing their early press shots and directing the video for the track ‘Atmosphere’.
He said: "When I was growing up in Holland, Joy Division were a band that really moved me. The NME was like a bible and Paul Morley’s interviews with Joy Division really inspired me. Joy Division are the reason I moved to England in the first place. That was 25 years ago, and I feel really honoured to be directing the story of Ian’s life 25 years later."
The screenplay has been written by Manchester writer Matt Greenhalgh and is set to go into production in July. Casting will begin in March.
You will probably be more aware of the film that is being made of Kurt Cobain's death. More on this.
A new film charting the events leading up to KURT COBAIN's death is set to be released.
Director Gus Van Sant, best known for mainstream movies like ‘Good Will Hunting’, ‘Drugstore Cowboy’ and ‘To Die For’ , has finished shooting the movie which provides an insight into the former Nirvana singer’s final days.
Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home with a gunshot wound to the head on April 8, 1994.
‘Final Days’ does not offer any conclusions as to why the troubled singer killed himself but instead suggests he was already resigned to his own death long before he was found in his home.
Van Sant told MTV: "There are a lot of hypotheses about what happened, but I don't know of any full eyewitness account, just tiny momentary ones.
"Everyone has a different opinion, but there’s not one true, authoritative account. He was just kind of missing."
The central character in the low budget semi-documentary style film is played by Michael Pitt, who also stars in M Night Shyamalan’s new blockbuster‘The Village’.
Van Sant added: "We're not showing anything specifically that's challenging anyone.
"There's not really any drugs in the film. Some people appear to be on drugs, but you don't see any drugs. There is a gun. But it's all oblique.
"There are a lot of little things that happen that add up to not so much the story as much as the environment. He plays his guitar, he sings a song, a telephone yellow pages salesman visits him, he watches TV. Things like that are very large. But there are no answers, no ‘this is causing that."
‘Final Days’ is scheduled to be released thist year.

I assume you have seen Kurt & Courtney then?
I don't know what to think, but his death seems suspicious.

I saw the video for Love Will Tear Us Apart on telly the other, you kind of forget just how amazing Joy Division are. Hopefully I'll get round to watching the film.

It's always amazing to me, just how short a time they were around, considering the impact they have had. There is no doubt that his death contributed to that (their impact, not their short time around - that is obvious), but still, the impact they would have had anyway, is pretty amazing considering.

There's a lot of bands around at the moment with whom you can trace a direct link from Joy Division (and other bands of that era, PiL and Gang of Four especially). But whichever way you look at it, in terms of subsequent influence or not - their recorded work was stunning.
I heard of this once, a radio presenter after playing Love Will Tear Us Apart: "Joy Division eh? Where are they now?"
Aaaaargh!!

No I haven't actually, I should do really, seeing as it's set in my home city. I just find it hard to get excited about British films a lot of the time.

Yep, it was a pretty great film. I had to see it as Joy Division and New Order have made some of the greatest songs. Getting used to the accents was pretty tough at first. Probably missed a few funny quips. The Happy Mondays seemed like an impossible lot. From the way they were portrayed it is surprising they got together to make any kind of record at all.
