Speedy Marie hits me every time I hear it and I have heard it over 1000 times. Such a beautiful and touching song.

Good choice, although "I Will Run After You" is also worthy. |

Ahhh, I was gonna say Speedy Marie also!
Happy love song or sad love song? Coastline affects me a lot as a sad one.

These days, given what is going on his life, I'd say it's "Violet." It rings true, sounds heartfelt, it's a simple tune, yet complex lyrically. And I love how it ... stops... for a sec ("to breathe....").
Come to think of it, it's the antithesis to Speedy Marie, which is fast and loud, and a damn fine song in its own right.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

Speedy Marie definitely wins for me, though I'd give an honourable mention to Honeycomb Track Strange Goodbye, which is about saying goodbye to someone you still love. Speedy Marie's great in a lyrical and "things are going great" sense, but Strange Goodbye is the polar opposite, and has caused eye wells more than once.

I like how you premised this with frank's "boy/girl" love songs. Someone I really respect once told me.."every song is a love song" and you know I must say that in Frank's case it is true. As a result I just can't pick my favorite long song of frank's....(boy/girl love songs that is)...it absolutely depends on my mood or whether I am feeling frisky or sappy. |

Considering the great proliferation of HONEYCOMB, I do think it's fair to count Violet or Strange Goodbye.
But not Kiss My Ring.
Looks like we are slowly moving closer to a release date. Pray.

Very good. Call me old school if you like, but Honeycomb is one album I refuse to hear until I've actually found the CD at the store and bought it! |

Thats the thread Rita m'dear! I never said it was a love song!
wires crossed.. accept my apologies.. would you like me to kiss your ring?
My votes in on Speedy Marie also, I've been listening to it on my little MP3 player today restraining myself from crooning along on the bus. I don't think the locals would approve...

speedy marie is my personal fave. but i have been listening to every time i go around here a lot the last few days. kind of a hidden gem (like so many other frank songs). it's really taken on a different feel after i reread the lyrics.

I'll take "I Will Run After You".
There are only a few classic boy/girl love songs in Frank's catalog.
What about "Velouria"? Boy/alien or whatever, but it should count.
The violet, the lily and the pink but those I refused all three |

Yeah, I was thinking about the boy/girl thing.
don't mean to take this thread so seriously, but it would be cool to have a list of the songs we consider to be of love. I've always wanted to burn a cd of Frank slow and sad, or just a concept album of some sort.
Maybe Shazeb is the best one to answer this, but what we thinking here as a 'love' song. For me it's Frank singing from his perspective about a girl. The theme of the song being franks feelings or thoughts.
But he loves the south part and your marble ear too. Is this a love song? |

Heloise
Certainly not one of those "and they lived happily ever after", but most good love songs aren't about the good times, are they?
I found this in the FB song data base, where Frank is quoted as saying"...I think on that one I actually researched the name Helloise, to see what came up. I just punched it up on a search engine, and there she was. A nun! Not a nun, she was a pupil of some priest guy, and they had a kid, they took the kid away from her and they castrated the guy and they both retreated back into religious lives, but they wrote to each other, love letters for the rest of their lives, and when they both finally passed away they were buried next to each other in some Paris cemetery. There you go. Gee, I wonder what I should write about?" - Frank Black, Free Williamsburg (Nov 02) http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/november_2002/frank-black.htm [see FB song data base, "Quotes" at the end of the lyrics for Heloise] |

Hard to tell what is and isn't a love song, sometimes.
Is Hey! a love song? Is South Bay? Sometimes I hear So. Bay as a love song, but that's just my associations with that neighborhood.

"You're Such a Wire" may not have all the lovey dovey lyrics. But the music is sweet, and it just seems like a song you'd like to sing to your sweetheart (especially if your sweetheart is a wire). |
