I need some ideas folks. I need some song suggestions for the band I am starting. We are gonna have our first meet-up next week I think and we need to work on a cover to start with (just to break the ice musically).

The singer is female so the Pixies are probably out (except maybe Here Comes Your Man and the ones that Kim sings). I have thought about maybe 'Full On Idle' by The Breeders but I need loads of other suggestions.

I said that I would give her a CD of songs that I suggest we try, so I will need about 20 songs. Nothing tricky though, this is a band of people who have not been playing long, so the easier the better. Nothing too obscure either 'cos I could do with having it in my collection (if not I may just download it).

Any suggestions will be appreciated/laughed at.

But I thought covers were supposed to be about what the band loves or is influenced by. Please pardon my ignorance. I'm sure you guys have some favorite songs?

Personally, I have no band and can't play an instrument, but I've always wanted to cover "St. James' Infirmary" and "Puttin' on the Ritz", among lots of others. I have a list here somwhere. Talk about your pipe dreams!

I do love that song actually Kitty, the cover is good also.

This cover is not necessarily gonna stay, it's just a tester to start with. The girl has said that her voice is not that strong yet so that's why I think that most Frank sung Pixies songs are out. The Breeders are a HUGE influence on me so one of theirs would be a great choice but I am not just looking at bands that influence my songwriting, just a song that we all like (not even like at the moment necessarily) will do. I just want to give her some options.

I am also gonna add 'Huffer' from Title TK too.

Slight left at the traffic lights for you then....

You may find this odd......

Gorecki - Lamb. I know you don't like lamb so much but this song is great, lyrically lovely and very gentle. I always wondered how it would sound guitary. It's a gentle song to sing as well. Download it and have a listen.

Trust me I'm going to be a doctor.

Funnily enough Kim, I was thinking about that one.

I am also thinking about Wuthering Heights.

I would download it Kitty, but I am not sure I want to go near Limewire ever again.

Limehouse too, but she'll need to be capable of keeping her own sense of rhythm.

We used to do them.
They are fun fun fun songs to play.

Psycho Killer too maybe?

www.olga.net has a bunch of guitar tabs.

I'm trying to think of some songs. What about some old Throwing Muses or Cat Power? Some of Chan's songs are less difficult on the voice. Or maybe Faun Fables?

i would recommend not limiting your cover chocies to original female voices - just because its originally sung by a male doesn't mean a female can't sing it. just go for something with a good feel, OR, ask her what she wants to sing and you guys learn that

Oh no I am looking at male sung songs too. Just not Pixies ones that Frank sings.

I have a few male sung songs so far, and she suggested a Radiohead one herself and a couple of Smashing Pumkins songs.

As for figuring them out myself, it's quicker to find them online, especially as I need all guitar parts and bass lines. Time is of the essence.

Not sure if she could manage the screaming of those two though and they just wouldn't be the same without it. I think the Kim sung ones are the easiest. Might give Gigantic a go.

Thanks for the links fbc.

I also thought about Noaloha. Neither of us are lead guitarists but I could do simple lead (very simple). None of us are really into songs with solos anyway so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

And yes Kitty, the YYY's are going on next. Nick Zinner's guitar playing is pretty odd though. May take some working out even with tabs.

I'm also thinking 'Island In The Sun' by Weezer.

99 Red Balloons by Nina. Genius, thanks.

I have added 'Waiting For The Man' by The Velvet Underground which is piss easy, Modern Romance by Yeah Yeah Yeahs which is also piss easy, and Since Yesterday by Strawberry Switchblade which has some really easy chords that I have never come across before. My list is growing.

Think I've got enough Breeders songs to give to her for now. Thanks anyway.

Cool HPM can't wait to hear more about the band.

Yes Breeders and Belley are cool. Retrowise maybe Blondie, Pat Benatar, or Go Go's. Janis and Fleetwood Mac are also cool but I am guessing probably too retro.
