Spybot Search & Destroy is free.
SpySweeper is actually one of (if not) the best pay software. You can download a free trial which will allow you to update once.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

That free one doesn't seem to have done the trick. It keeps asking me if I want to allow changes, and it won't stop asking me now.

The folks over at techTV recommend trying the "evil microsoft" antispyware BETA program. Microsoft Antispyware BETA
[edit] To load the beta program you must have Windows 2000 or highter.

Should I try it? I am starting to get annoyed now 'cos nothing seems to be working. Not for free anyway.

People like to call Microsoft evil. That's all. Nothing to worry about.

Can't do it 'cos my mate installed windows XP for me. Grrr.
There must be a good free one out there. Having my homepage constantly changing, and pop-ups galore is getting rather annoying, and I am reluctant to enter confidential information on the net now.

By the way, for getting rid of my current spyware (which seems to have just appeared today), would using the 'System Restore' option on my PC work in getting rid of them?

Oh, and one of the best free ways to get rid of spyware/adware/hijacking.
Fuck IE.
Download Firefox.

MS bought Giant Software's spyware program a few months ago and have repackaged it as MS AntiSpyware (as mentioned by Thomas above). I've used it on some computers here at work and it seems to work fairly well. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Once you get it removed, what you really need to do is stop using Internet Explorer. Move to Mozilla, Opera, Firefox...anything but IE. |

BLT I don't think he can install it because the EVIL Microsoft won't allow copied versions of Win XP access to their free software.

That's right. All the anti-spyware programs I have tried (about 4 now) haven't gotten rid of everything. Some of them are on System32 and it said they are still in use.
Woudl the system restore option work? If I set it back a week or so, would that do it?

You're going to have to edit your registry. Use Hijack This. |

I've used Hijack This before. It's very good but you need to be careful what you remove.
Also, with a lot of these spyware apps you've got to do your regedits in safe mode or they'll replace what you remove before you're even done. |

Probably not. The attitude of Hijack This is, "Here's a big list. The source of your problem is somewhere on the list. You decide which one it is." |

Thanks, I'll give it a miss then. As it stands, I am not being caused to much of a problem. I am not getting too many pop-ups really, it's just that my homepage keeps changing to 'About:blank' and a search toolbar appears below my address bar.

Just my two cents amigo...
In internet explorer, you could try clicking View > Toolbars and see if the search bar under your address bar has a particular name. Then google the search bar name for a solution. Or right click on the search bar and see if it points to any particular website, and then google that website name (with a term like "spyware" or "remove" etc..)
I had a customer the other day that had this situation. Hijack This, Adaware, Spybot, McAfee, didn't remove it, but there was a single remover tool for this particular search bar.
Also in XP, temporarily disabling System Restore whilst you run virus scans or spyware scans can help to remove irksome files if they are locked for use. Also booting into safe mode can help that too. |

DO NOT USE ADAWARE!!!! A it person at work told me about it and loaded it on my work cd. When I downloaded some spyware on accident I went to adaware to remove it. What they don't tell you until you download it-- is that they will install spyware on your computer if you don't pay!!! I have tried deleting it several times from my system to no avail. Adaware sucks! |

I think pretty much everyone gets spyware unless you have some sort of thing to block it. I wish it were illegal, Vovat!!!! |
