What was the first album that you've bought in your life, I think this can show us how did we went through our musical taste and later to Frank Black's music. Of course that isn't about the children's music, the one that made you go on this way...
I remember that it was very difficult here to have some albums, we had to order and wait for them (sometimes is still like that), and the very first one that I got was the Bauhaus 1979-1983, I was about 13 or 14 years old, that's how I started!

My parents listened to the whole thing to check for swear words. They missed the S word in the first song, but told me to fast forward past "I Need You Tonight" when it came up.

That's funny, Tim. My sisters routinely give my youngest sister (8) garbage that she shouldn't be listening to, it's quite frustrating. Not just bad commercial music, but about and containing lyrics I'd never give to my eight year old.

That said, I remember how much I liked some songs (like "I'm So Excited") back in the 80's without realizing what it was about at all and I guess it doesn't matter that much.

I had gotten Bossanova, Ned's Atomic Dustin: Are You Noraml and Pearl Jam: Ten, for Christmas that year, but this is the first album I bought myself, on cassette, cause cd's were fancy back then. I was such a grunge kid.

My first single was Mickey by Tony Basil.

The first LP (really a cassette) was a compliation by K-Tel my brother and I went in on. We ended up getting two eventually I think the first one had like Flock of Seagulls, Mr.Robto and Mexican Radio, but I might be mixing them up.

I don't remember! Am I senile?

My whole childhood up through college is actually all blurred and out of order.

Do you think I'm senile?

With my own money? Probably a Weird Al album. I really didn't buy much in the way of music until I went to college.

Faith No More's cover of Lionel Ritchie's "Easy" is on my mix cd. The 2nd one...;)
Amazing song.

What I *do* remember is my first tape player was a Toshiba boom box that lasted forever, that my mom and stepdad gave me for my 11th birthday (in 1984). Along with it they gave me two tapes: Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Madonna's "Like a Virgin". I guess my parents weren't as stodgy as I remembered. I sure loved Thriller.

(that senile bit was a baaaaad joke)

Bought when I was 13. It's still one of my fave records.
And contrary to general opinion, I think the first 3 albums with Warner are excellent.

I don't remember what the first album I bought myself was, but the first things I really remember listening to and loving were OFF THE WALL by Mr. Jackson and the song HERE COMES THE SUN by the Beatles.

Hmmm, there are some suspiciously cool albums listed here. I mean, either some of you guys bought your first albums very late (teenage years) or you were the coolest kids alive, with instantly great taste.

Or you're lying.

The first record I owned was the Star Wars theme tune but that was bought for me. The first one I picked, although it was bought with my mother's money, was Fire On Ice by Elton John. Crock of shite. Still got it though.
