I'm not really sure the forum HAS changed all that much. Granted, people come and go, but I think traffic is relatively constant. There's probably less on-topic discussion for the simple reason that it's been while since Frank has released anything. When the forum was first created, Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop were new, and a lot of members hadn't had the chance to discuss Frank's earlier work, so there was a lot of talk about it. It was only about a year after that that Show Me Your Tears was released, and that spawned more discussion. The next big thing was the Pixies reunion, but even that is pretty much yesterday's news nowadays (although I'll admit that I very rarely read the Pixies Live or Pixies News sections of the forum). So much of what can be said has already been said. I would imagine Honeycomb will spark some new discussion, though. (Technically, it already has, but, not having heard a preview of the album, I always skip those threads.)
I didn't even start reading the General Chat until I'd already been here for a while, and it was even longer before I started posting here. I think I was afraid I would be ignored or insulted, but that really wasn't the case at all. I still feel like I'm in a minority here in some respects, but I have fun reading and posting, and isn't that what's truly important?
As for the nonsense aspect, I'm all for tangents and irrelevant stuff. I think part of the fun here is seeing how a topic will develop. There are some topics that I'll only read for the tangents, because I'm not interested in the official subject. I can see how it would be annoying to start a thread about something you're really interested in and have it degenerate into nonsense, but I also think that's probably preferable to having the thread die out totally. And yes, there are some threads that become chatty, but there are different kinds of chattiness. I think it's only really a problem when it gets to be an exclusive conversation between two or three people, and even then, I'll usually just skip the thread.
Overall, I think this forum has done a good job of remaining active throughout its life.

No, those were pictures of Celine's husband.

Thank you. I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waiter.

Wow! That's almost exactly what I was going to post when I first saw that quote captioned in your post. "Yes, but that's only because I was posting them as her husband." ba -ding- bang. Vovat, you must be some form of comedic super genius.

I think that Dean said almost all of it, When I found the FB.net I started readind almost everything about Frank Black, then sometimes I gave a look at the General chat, and so on...What I find really interesting is that as Tony said, if it wasn't for this I wouldn't have meet in person one very nice american guy and a sweet english girl, I think I found here some very nice people and news about music and new bands. Another interesting point is what Benji started, the compilation swap game, another great experience that if it wasn't here I don't think I would ever do it. I got to know some bands that I didn't knew that they existed at all... I used to hate the internet, and now here I am! also think as BLT said that the reunion is going to expose this forum a lot, everybody knows the Pixies now, and some people won't come here for Frank's work now, but for what he did with the Pixies, but maybe that's a beggining for some people get to know his solo work that most of the times was ignored!
Purify the colors, purify my mind, and spread the ashes of the colors over this heart of mine!

I'm depressed! First I finished Craig Thompson's "Blankets" which was awfully sad, and now this thread that makes me remember all the cool guys I miss... I have to go back to the thread where the girls said I'm cute right now.

I welcome you starmekitten for stepping while beeing so new to improve things. Welcome to the forum, nice meeting you. I think you are an example of what can be done to improve things.
Hopefully we can all think about our concerns and empower ourselves and others to improve this fourm. I think talking here is a good and healthy start.
Maybe some of the vetrans can also give us more concrete examples of what has changed and what hasn't. Ramona, you have given us a good start. Also give us concrte steps of improving the forum. This will help us get a better understanding of where your coming from as well as what can be done to make things better. For example, what do you mean by exciting threads? Ramona, why did your dear friends leave? What can be done to get them back?
I don't think it is really a matter of IMPROVING the forum, like someone said (Brian? Jim?) it goes through peaks and valleys and that is just the way it is. The forum has gotten more crowded and more popular (which I am happy about in most ways) and that contributes to all the extra STUFF I mentioned. I don't think my lovely friends left for any specific reasons, although I know some of them feel overwhealmed when they come in and see SO MUCH, so then they just leave without trying to get past the tip of the iceberg.
It's like a party, people come in and people leave. Some people stay too long, some people leave after 15 minutes. Then there are the old drunks like me - standing in the corner, hoping someone will turn on some dancing music.

I'm not listening to dancing music at all right now... It's Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger. And it's not helping me actually.

Denis, it was me in the baby thread who said you looked cute.
Sorry to interrupt the flow but I can't have Denis listening to Willie Nelson.

I remember I stumbled onto this forum purely by accident. It's the first forum I've ever posted on. And I've been posting here for about 2 years.
I remember when I first started posting I decided to open up with a thread, which was quickly disregarded and made to look like a dumb topic by...the un-namable un-named. I kinda discouraged me from posting anymore of my opinions...but I slowly got over that. I remember Carolynanna made me feel really comfortable (It sounds like i'm describing my "first time"...you know what I mean) by not only giving me a bit of confidence when it comes to my replies, also by replying to my craptastic topics. One thing that does kinda get my goat it the people who seem to think that all of the conversations should be about Frank and Frank-related topics exclusively. I mean yes of course he is a fascinating character as well as an ultra-talented, ultra-cool and more deserving of infinite conversations than most other people(well I don't really need to say much more that isn't already clear) but it's not only the love of Frank that brought me here, but also knowing that there were other people out there that I could share common interests with, as well as differences. yes... I'm sure I've blathered on there ... that's just my two cents.

Just curious how many topics on average the forum saw in General Chat and other parts of the forum?
Well, I guess what I am getting at is what are some steps that you would suggest to make you and the other "old" timers happy.
I can think of maybe starting a quota on the posts/topics started per day, but I really don't think that would be effective. Maybe we could start a chatroom of all old-timers and no access to new timers.
If you or anyone else has ideas that's great.
Just from reading everyone's comments does seem like this is an issue of democracy, with many points of views, intersts and agendas to managed for the best interest of the whole. I am also wondering if it is a case of a rivalry due to pre-Pixies reunion members and post-reunion members? |

I don't give a crap about newbies versus old-timers. That's lame. And I'm not close enough to anyone here to be in a clique.
The problem is that my outlook as a Frank Black fan is much less optimistic than it was a year ago. I'm tired of the Pixies because I've heard most of the songs too many times over the past 15 years. Kinda like so many "new" threads are a rehash of what was discussed one or two years ago. Maybe it will be different when Frank puts out an album of new material. (Is Honeycomb ever going to be released?) |

I think Honeycomb was supposed to be released in March. Is that not true anymore?
If I ever felt cliquey at all it was probably in the HH and all those people are gone now, so I don't have that feeling anymore. If anything, I feel out of the loop about most things in General Chat.

I am completely full of shit, have nothing valuable to offer any conversation and generally contribute to an overall 'lowering of standards' here on the forum, as in the rest of my social life.
I also am not a huge FB fan, but am growing.
I'm hanging around trying to learn how to be cool and different like everybody else.
