How has the forum changed, if at all? A couple of people have recently complained about things not being as good as they once were. What do you think?

I think there seem to be a lot more extraneous subjects then there were in the beginning (or circa 2002 when I joined) and a lot of subjects which go off topic which tends to drive me crazy. Also, FB and TC's were going strong then and that is where my Frank interest really lies. Of course, all of that said, I can't imagine completely leaving even though many of my Henhouse pals are dearly departed (not dead, just not here).

That always seems to be the case and, indeed, is. It's just that the "dozen characters" change from time to time. Isn't that the case with groups? Some people are more outspoken than others. And then for whatever reason they are less so and others take their place as the more visible.

ramona, are you talking about extraneous subjects in the FB part of the forum or in off topic?

I don't know. Off topic I guess. I feel like when I am gone for a long time, I come back and there is just so much and a lot of it is crap.
I am very biased towards the old days though, I try to be open minded but a lot of people just seem to want to ramble endlessly. I always feel like a lot of the conversations could be moved to email, not sure if it is the quickness of the forum which makes people want to "chat". I am guilty of that too, to some extent, so I can't really be that much of a meiser about it. It's a fine line, and I keep coming back. So, it apparently doesn't bother me too much.
I think the other diffence between the old days is that there have been some cases more recently where I have not felt as free to express opinions, it seems like people are quicker to jump on things they disagree with and much more ready to completely FLAME someone for a different point of view. There have been times when I have felt personally attacked (and also like I get very personally upset about things, which really shouldn't bother me) and that makes me want to leave and not come back.

I agree with ramona and ObfuscateByWill.
Many of the threads are crap, made by people who apparently enjoy seeing their name on the screen and want to boost their post count.
Plus I miss Derek and Dave. Derek was the funniest person on the board, IMO. |

I see your point, but who decides whats extraneous in off topic, you know? In the on-topic sections absolutely, but around here I think it can get blurred. Is the crock pot thread extraneous? What about the Chuck threads? I guess I could understand if there were 4 topics about slightly different aspects of crock pottery (say what?), but what does it hurt to have one? I really enjoy the random wacky threads that get started in here, and if people want to go in a completely different and serious direction, they should feel free to do so. After all, it's just a message board. A really good one, at that.
I do have to admit that it dives me a little bit crazy when the FB/Pixies part of the forum gets all gooped up with what I feel is (I hate to say crap, but...) crap because that's where most people, Frank included, go first when they find us. Maybe I just take that aspect of the site much more seriously than this one.

Well, one of the ways it seems to have changed to me since I joined in 2002 (vs. when you joined in 2004) is that there are a lot more random topics about nothing or close to nothing than there used to be and that was the question this topic posed (i.e. "in your opinion...")

I get nervous when people decide that something is not valid, be it a thread or a post or a piece of art or what have you. One forum member's crappy thread is another forum member's fun diversion.

Well, I definately think these are serious concerns. Since I am pretty new here it's hard to compare now to the good old days. Sorry things have changed for you and you're not happy.
It's always good I think of what to do to make things better. Maybe we could do a survey including members of FB.net.
It can be done on EVITE... It will only take a hour or less to set up and send out and then we can get a good idea of why people leave, what they like about the forum, what they wish the can improve and any other reccomendations/suggestions.
Then we can put our heads together about solutions to make it better. What do you guys think? |

This is a common occurence with online groups or forums...I've been a part of so many different communities, and this is how it always turns out. There are the pioneers, those who were around in the beginning, which is usually the golden age. Everything is fresh, new, and exciting. Then more people start to join...convesation dwindles...people start disappearing, quality of the content dips, newer people begin to take over...and it continues on until it hits a plateau where things just kinda...fester. I poke around one or two threads now and then but nothing's really exciting anymore.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

i've been posting since 2 weeks after the forum opened, and i have to say that its definetely gone through peaks and valleys. there are certainly a lot of people who post the most (and some would say too much {not me, i'm all for lots of threads - better chance of something interesting me}), but i think for this is a pretty healthy forum, with not too much flaming or baning happening, and should be celebrated for its nice people and their respect for others...most of the time. its probably changed just in its sheer size and its major influx of pixies fans who are NOT fb fans - which sort of annoys me. but oh well, what do i know

I honestly think the influx of new topics keeps the forum moving, otherwise it would stagnate. New people bring new opinions and new slants. I understand people are missed when they move on but when newbies come along and try to stick and get along surely this should be embraced? I flicked through the archives earlier. I ordered the threads by the most posts, I did the same for general chat and to be honest I don't think the themes change only the people do.
There are always going to be, both online and in the 'real world' people or groups of people you don't like, don't agree with or are just plain annoyed by. Thats the way it is. But to invalidate so many by pretty much stating that what us new folk talk is crap is a bit hurtfull. We're not perfect but give us a go, you know?
A turnover of people in some instances and topics in the other should be keeping it fresh. I will add that three forum members in particular I applaud for both involving me and making me feel welcome when I came here are Floop, Carolyn and Apl and they've been here a while but are three of the most accomodating and friendly people around. It's never easy being a newbie in any sort of community. Any of you ever had to go to new schools where groups were firmly established already and you had to break your way in? Sometimes this feels like that.
So, it's no wonder if there are a group of people who joined around the same time and were having a lot of difficulty cracking in anywhere else they are going to get friendly. Then we get accused of being cliquey, which for me was never my intention. I really hate cliques. But if people are unwilling or reluctant to take the time to get to know and to interact with the newcomers then the separation is made. As it is being felt quite keenly now.
I know it is going to be hard for you guys remembering as it was and seeing that it is different now, if only for the different people, but the fact is things have changed. Comparing us to them helps no one.
I don't know how well it'll work but I made a black hole to try to contain the nonsense found objectionable.

I can only say that when I joined I found it hard to get into conversations, and now I still do, thats why I dont post much. But as far as a web community goes it seems pretty healthy, I too have fun reading some of the great threads that come up on here. I agree that for the outsider it seems like most if not all topics deviate into chit chat between mates, but hey if I were part of that group I'd do the same..when people spend time together thats what happens, if good for one thing this site has created some good friends. I know from previous threads topic deviation has caused some friction, that is the only gripe I have with an otherwise thoroughly entertaining site.
peace out homey |

Sounds like the survey idea isn't taking hold. But it's a great way to really to quantify what are very subjective issues, and get actionable ways to move forward. Hopefully will tend to be more open in a survey than they would on a forum. It's really simple and might give us insight into important issues as to why people leave.
I welcome you starmekitten for stepping while beeing so new to improve things. Welcome to the forum, nice meeting you. I think you are an example of what can be done to improve things.
Hopefully we can all think about our concerns and empower ourselves and others to improve this fourm. I think talking here is a good and healthy start.
Maybe some of the vetrans can also give us more concrete examples of what has changed and what hasn't. Ramona, you have given us a good start. Also give us concrte steps of improving the forum. This will help us get a better understanding of where your coming from as well as what can be done to make things better. For example, what do you mean by exciting threads? Ramona, why did your dear friends leave? What can be done to get them back?

I can't have my oppinion since, unfortunatly, I'm not here from the beggining, I used to read a lot the forum before I loged in, but for me, what I think is that this seems a healthy forum to me, where people have respect for each other, and are here for the same reason, I guess! Sometimes I think that, as Brian said, some people aren't truly FB Fans, but what can you do? And with the reunion, I think this forum will be more exposed than ever...

I think we need some real debates, issues where different people express their opinions. Like the stuff about gay marriage - that was a cool thread, precisely because people did not agree. If everyone stays polite and tries to bring clearly his arguments, then you feel smarter after going through a thread. I appreciated some books or records or films people suggested me on this forum, it was very useful to learn stuff about java jackets and quesadillas so I guess my time wasn't wasted here.
That being said, a couple of my own threads were pretty stupid - like that one about foxes.
Also, people should share more, I think. It is wonderful to have people from all over the world here, speaking the same language (Frankish ).
I agree that the quality of the threads was higher when I joined ( in 2003) but instead of complaining, let's just launch a smart thread. I will start one about concentration camps - not the most cheerful one, but something that is very important for me.
I will show you fear in a handful of dust |

I say this with respect toward each and every person on this forum:
Every group eventually devolves into cliques and into (what to my ear sounds like) self-aggrandizing nostalgia for the good old days.
For me, the forum rocks! People, Frank posted not only a birth announcement but a pic of his baby! In October, in the middle of the reunion tour, he made the time to do a live chat! Need I count all the many gifts with which we forum members have been blessed recently? Dean and Brian generously shared with us their backstage access to The Man on the last Hammerstein night. (I still can't view the clip of Daisy and Frank . :-( ) I even liked that Jon Tiven would start a Honeycomb preview thread (never mind how badly he screwed it up).
What some of you deem as lamentable, I call democracy and individualism.
Many is the time a thread looks to me like an IM session, so I go somewhere else (inevitably I find something on the forum that appeals to me). If a thread seems to fall short of your standards, don't read it. Start one you think is cool. You cannot control other people. As I say to opponents of gay marriage, "Don't get married to a gay person."

See now, would it be bad if I posted:
"Mmmm, pesto pizza!"
and/or
asked you what brand you ate. Or, my god, do you make your own? I had trouble when I tried to make one at home, the olive oil from the pesto fried the crust.
and/or
I bet Frank likes himself some pesto pizza. Or what if he doesn't? That'd be a little weird for me if I found out that Frank frowns upon the pesto pizza.
This, to me, is the forum. And I don't wish to apologize.

Thanks for the insight as a relatively new member, Mr. Geezer. As far as the forum 'devolving' or the 'good old days', I do know what you mean. I've been lurking here since the beginning, too.
You get to be friends with the people and then they start not appearing and it's sort of sad. New people show up and for no real reason there's a bit of resentment because this was 'your place' and they're not Ex-Member-X. Eventually, the enthusiasm for a place to talk Frank dwindles as you've exhausted your supply and don't have much to talk about that you haven't already. And so you move to the general chat more and more until you almost never read the FB stuff unless there's something new or exciting gonig on (or if there's nothing interesting in general chat). Until that too doesn't seem as thrilling as it used to, and you lose more old friends and lament the 'good old days'.
The fact is not that the forum has changed much, aside from the Pixies reunion which I think has slown things down significantly, it's that this is just the natural cycle of things. We're not going to be able to talk about SSMVGD, the existence of the alternate Trompe mixes, or why FB never played St. Francis live forever. And people will come and go.
Truth be told, when I first moved from lurker to poster, I found it very very cliquey. I'd post and it would be ignored. Start a thread, maybe one response from another newbie, that's it. I even tried posting in the HH (which at the time had quite a few pages already) and remember being scorned by a member who I won't name. I think this is bull and certainly don't think our new members are any less justified in being here than people who have been here a year or since day one.
That's why I don't really like about a topic like this, the lamenting for the old days, it sort of places the burden of the lost interest on new members when really, it's just sort of a natural thing that happens and is nobody's fault but our own. At least that's my feeling on this old days syndrome.
That said, there are a few places where I feel we've let the community slip and some of you down, and I'm working with Dave to help rectify some of those. Most of these have nothing to do with the forum and more to do with content for the community, although there are things like getting Dave caught up on the Friends club (we will) and another chat down the road (hopefully).
I'd like to see more content added/revitalized on the site itself. I think that Jim (El Barto) is going to/has been getting the database up to date. I'm hoping to get some new/revitalized bios up soon, and we're working on putting some of that Friends' Club money towards the FTP. But that's more of what I'd like to see personally.
Anyway, thanks for the comments so far.

as someone who's been here from the beginning, i don't miss the "old days".. i liked the forum then, but i also like it now. i think forums go through waves.. and it can't always be scintillating.
i don't understand people who complain about the content of topics but don't start their own topics. i agree with monsieur's attitude. if you want to see conversation go in a certain direction, then start a topic or join in.. everybody collectively determines how the conversation will go. and it will only be "dominated" by other people if you let it.
as for silly threads .. what can i say? i don't come here to discuss the Holocaust or get into political discussions, generally. but i do think it's great that there are serious discussions and arguments here. to me, "General Chat" means general chat, which means it's open to anything. like kathryn said, if you're not interested in a thread, don't read it. there are plenty of threads i don't read, believe it or not.
i also don't think there are more silly threads but just more threads in general, because there are more people. if you go through the archives i'm sure you'll find plenty of meaningless, trite threads in there (from me at least)
i want to say though, i've gotten valuable things out of the forum too. if it weren't for the forum, i wouldn't have gotten tickets to the secret Pixies show in Pomona, which is probably in my top 3 shows of all time. or the breeders show where Joey played.. or, gotten to meet cool people from here (all the way from Portugal, to Sheffield, to NY to Burbank)..
long live the forum!

Still, looks like no-one's responded to this one
I started posting here, lets see, maybe 15 months ago, and it kind of has changed - the most noticeable thing for me is that there are more people, which is bound to lead to various things. When I joined, there were people like floop, Carolynanna, Dean, El Jimbo and ramona who were way up there on the post count table, and it was kind of hard to establish oneself. However, I had no objections really - for a start, I've not really participated to any extensive degree in any other web forums, so I don't have a lot to compare it to - and everyone was pretty courteous. I think there was a pretty high number of stoopid posts then as now, but its all pretty good fun. I've been guilty for a high number of 'dragging threads off-topic' instances, and I've tried to stop that (we all remember the rage us Brits were causing in the summer ). I don't mind it really now if the thread takes a valid turn, I am occasionally irritated by really pointless posts along the 'heheh' kind of line. But then, you don't have to read the thread, so its not too bad. My problem is that I have literally nothing better to do so tend to lurk a lot (hey, don't judge me until you do my job...) A few more serious discussion threads would be cool though, the ones where people express some good opinions in a respectfulm way.
Actually, in that vein, I'd like to credit Apl, ramona and Dean (in particular) for always having something really interesting to say.

No matter what you think about the state of todays forum, this is still THE place to be if you're into Frank Black. And I'm glad you're all still around and thank the ones in the beginning for making this site what it is. Even if they're no longer here, I wouldn't know. I was suprised in the beginning, and still a little now, that there isn't more chat about FBs work. Maybe it's all been said before I was around, which is good reason, i joined after SMYT and we haven't really had a new album to speak of. The fb section I wish was more popular, it seems the ones who have been around for a while don't really share their thoughts, except in general chat. Like I said, you've probably already said your peace, so why repeat yourself just for us newbies.
I think it all depends on what you want from this site. At the moment i love the chats with you up top, in the fb section. i've learnt so much, and i thought I knew it all. i've read about songs I never knew existed, and questions I think, have been answered. But the general section too has had me in stitches at times. We have some quick minds here. And of course thoughtful and smart people. It's been a pleasure.
This is the only forum I post on, and my favourite site too. I've received so much information, knowledge about fb from you, more than I could ever have imagined, and could ever have wished for. So far it's been one fun experience and I keep coming back. I learn something new every day. and that's a good thing, right? In my small town here you can feel like the only fb fan in the world, no one to share your enthusiasm and passion with. this site is a god send.
can't wait for the next album. this time i'll be here to witness this site in full flow, discussing what you do best. Frank Black's music. |

BELIEVE!
I just joined to mess with some internet nerds, then somehow became the biggest internet nerd I know. I knew I should have tried the Celine Dion forums. You FB people are too cool to screw with.

KOK, I heard that you got kicked off the Celine Dion forum for posting too many sasquatch-related photos. Is that true?
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |
