If you saw eraserhead chances are the baby freaks the shit out of you and I want to know if anyone has ideas on how they did it? Now I know David Lynch will never say cause it would kill the mystery. Also when I was watching it with my friend he thinks that it was a chicken cause of the way it looked. Post you thoughts!

I found this interview:
David Lynch even used to blindfold the projectionist who ran Eraserhead's rushes while the film was still in production because he never wanted anyone to see the effect of how he did the baby (nicknamed "Spike" by Jack Nance). Following is an interview excerpt between him and writer Stephen Saban in the September 28, 1978, issue of the Soho News (read the entire interview):
Question: Did you make that thing?
David Lynch: That I . . . I don't . . . I . . . Stephen, I don't wanna, uh . . . talk about that.
Can you just tell me if it's a . . . sculpture? It's so well done. Someone I saw it with thought that it might be a calf fetus.
That's what a lot of people think it is.
I thought it was made, but couldn't figure out how you got it to move. Was it battery-operated?
I really don't . . .
You credit a doctor in the film. I s that related?
Well, I was looking into different ways, you know, in the beginning...
And?
If I say, I'll really feel bad.
Is it because you'd be giving away a technical secret, or because you'd be arrested?
You know, there's no promotional photos of the baby because people, like, uh...you know... it's like, nice to discover along in the film and not to know, like...much about it.
You say all the sounds are organic. Do you use the sound of a real baby crying?
No.
Then what is it? Or won't you tell that either?
I'm sorry, Stephen. Doggone it, you know, I'm not trying to, you know... It's just the baby stuff, I....
– END –
Will I ever reach 1000?

You can't really "give away" Eraserhead. It's not a "the butler did it" kind of a film..
That interview with Lynch is kinda worrying, Tim- it makes him sound like he used something a bit horrific for the baby..

i don't know how the projectionist could run dailies if they were blindfolded. but it makes for a good story.
i've been meaning to watch some Lynch for a while.

Mullholland Drive is one crazy film. Good though. Can honestly say I have never seen anything like it. My jaw was literally hanging open as it finished.

old dave is such a jokester.
i heard that at the premiere for WILD AT HEART (i think at Cannes), when introducing the film... instead of introducing the film he recited the entire Gettysburg Address. which is like an 8 minute speech.

possible baby stunt:
a hand from under the table through the wall. For close ups when spitting there would just be someone under there blowing through a tube.
But what the hell is it made of? Because its black and white it's so hard to say but it somehow looks like tissue. Like made of a dead animal. And how do those eyes move?
But there are so many questions about what you are seeing in Eraserhead. What is the grassy stuff under the radiator. What is that planet-like object made of?
One other scene in a Lynch movie reminded me of the baby: in Lost Highway during the metamorphosis of Pullman into the greasemonkey and end chase scene there is a shot of something that looks like flesh being burned/blown? and opening up. Does anyone have an idea about that? Best guess is that it could be a real shot done by endoscopy of something inside a body. |

You know, Lynch makes paintings onto which he glues roadkill and stuff.
That baby could be anything.

And if a fly lands on it while he's painting, oh well, new composition!

I watched eraserhead last night to work on the baby, and I think if it's any sort of baby animal it's a lamb rather than a calf or a chicken, it even sounds a bit sheep-like.
Fucking wierd little thing.
But Hey..

I know that the film was really low budget and it took 4 years to make because Lynch kept running out of money. Lynch didn't have the money for aything high tech so i think it's very likely that the "baby" is some sort of dead animal. |
