Did you hear about this? Sorry about all the text, it's abit of a read and from another source other than me, but they sum it up alot better than I ever could.
ARE THESE SCOTLAND'S BEST 50 POP ACTS EVER? Oct 21 2004
The List magazine (never heard of it but supposedly big mag in Scotland) has teamed up with experts (who?) to compile a shortlist of the 50 best Scottish music acts. From today, fans can use voting forms in the mag to pick their favourites, with the winner being announced in January. Here we look at all 50 candidates
ALTERED IMAGES Singer Clare Grogan became a sex symbol with 1981 hit Happy Birthday.
ARAB STRAP Painfully hip and poetic Falkirk duo.
THE ASSOCIATES Dundonian Billy MacKenzie and guitarist Alan Rankin had hits such as Party Fears Two.
AVERAGE WHITE BAND Topped US charts in 1975 with Pick Up The Pieces. AZTEC CAMERA Nominated for Best Album at The Brits in 1989 but best known for single Somewhere In My Heart.
BAY CITY ROLLERS Edinburgh act topped the charts around the world. BELLE & SEBASTIAN Glaswegians recently nominated for Ivor Novello and Mercury Music Prize awards.
THE BETA BAND Esoteric act who split this year. BIG COUNTRY Stormed the charts with Fields Of Fire in 1983 and enjoyed other hits such as Look Away.
BIS First unsigned band to go on Top Of The Pops but had just one hit - 1996's The Secret Vampire Soundtrack EP.
THE BLUE NILE Glasgow trio who've released four albums in 21 years beginning with the 1983 classic A Walk Across The Rooftops BOARDS OF CANADA Electronica outfit behind1998 album Music Has The Right To Children.
BRONSKI BEAT High-pitched, hi-energy pop act led by Glasgow's Jimmy Somerville and Steve Bronski. COCTEAU TWINS Called it quits after nine LPs in 1998.
DEACON BLUE Shot to fame with Dignity and other hits. Recently reformed. THE DELGADOS Influential indie band behind Chemikal Underground label.
DONOVAN Sixties throwback forever remembered for his hit Mellow Yellow.
EURYTHMICS Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart enjoyed 22 Top 40 hits.
THE EXPLOITED Punk band from Edinburgh. THE FIRE ENGINES Arty post-punk Edinburgh band. FRANZ FERDINAND Debut album won this year's Mercury prize. GOODBYE MR MCKENZIE Cult band whose only hit was 1989's The Rattler.
IDLEWILD Edin-burgh band behind acclaimed album 100 Broken Windows. THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND Formed out of the Sixties folk scene, albums included The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter.
THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN East Kilbride brothers Jim and William Reid shook up music scene with 1984 debut gigs.
JOSEF K From Edinburgh, brilliant post-punk songs included It's Kinda Funny.
LONNIE DONEGAN Skiffle king who enjoyed three No1 hits.
LOVE & MONEY Came close with the Candy Bar Express single but no chart cigar.
LULU Little woman with big voice - signature tune Shout.
JOHN MARTYN Probably best known for his 1973 album Solid Air.
FRANKIE MILLER Darlin' and Caledonia were his big hit songs.
MOGWAI A bit prog-rock and influenced by The Cure.
MULL HISTORICAL SOCIETY Colin MacIntyre built a cult following when he released the 2000 debut Barcode Bypass. NAZARETH Dunfermline rock band who enjoyed 1970s hit albums as well as singles. ONE DOVE Dance act who enjoyed minor success in the Nineties.
ORANGE JUICE One of Scotland's best ever groups sadly failed to ignite the charts.
THE PASTELS Another cult band who have influenced a generation of Scots indie bands.
PRIMAL SCREAM Screamadelica placed Bobby Gillespie's band on the map. THE PROCLAIMERS Twins Craig and Charlie are still going strong.
THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND Probably Scottish rock's greatest ever frontman, with legions of fans.
THE SHAMEN Aberdonian rave act who gained notoriety with Ebeneezer Goode.
SIMPLE MINDS Once competed with U2 for the accolade of world's greatest band.
SNOW PATROL Glasgow-based group acclaimed for brilliant album The Last Straw. ROD STEWART One of the greatest entertainers of the last century.
TEENAGE FANCLUB Bellshill group behind ballads such as Don't Want Control Of You.
TEXAS Sharleen Spiteri and the boys have enjoyed hits for 16 years.
TRASHCAN SINATRAS Indie act who enjoyed their best years in the Nineties.
TRAVIS Fran Healy's four piece have reached a level where they can enjoy a Greatest Hits release this coming month. THE VASELINES While they only sold records in their thousands, Eugene Kelly's band were an influence on Nirvana.
WET WET WET Four unemployed teenagers from Clydebank could do no wrong in the Eighties and early Nineties.
Big names who missed out
SOME top names are missing from the 50.
They include punk band The Skids, Dundee trio Danny Wilson, song-writing duo Gallagher & Lyle and even Stealers Wheel, responsible for the classic Stuck In The Middle With You.
And poor old Midge Ure gets a bodyswerve, despite success as a solo singer and with bands Slik and Ultravox.
(They announced the results last night I think)
and the winner is...
i've got some of their albums but not too sure if they should have won. Still thinking 'bout that one. And some dodgy bands there too. But polls a dodgy? Any bands you liked?

Proclaimers for sure. Heard them yesterday for the first time in ages when listening to Radio 1. They bigged it up as the Best Scottish Act ever poll, but there are a few I like.
And I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more. Proclaimers |

I've only ever heard that one song by Big Country called In a Big Country. I liked it back in the day but can anyone tell me what he shouts after he says?
"But you can't stay here with every single hope you have shattered."
I always wondered.
PS. I actually saw the Bay City Rollers a few years back. :)

Sorry Carolyanna, don't know that one.
I'm still thinking about the Proclaimers after Newo mentioned them. Can't get this tune out of my head. So...damn...catchy. |

OK, this is clearly not the BIg Country that I used to know. Who the hell is this? I got this from a lyrics website so I assume it's right. But it can't be can it?
IN A BIG COUNTRY
Some people think I suck when I freestlye, Don't be so sure, you havn't heard me in a while I'm back now, even bigger than before Cause I just got some from your momma, the nieghborhood whore! you look as gay as eminem cause he's a faggot Talkin about "Look at me, I'm B. rabbit I'll show my ass so the fags can grab it take a picture of it so you can have it" Here you go fag, I bet you would tap it And while you busy with that little faggot I'll have you girl's ass, I think I'll slap it Don't even mess with me with those baby rhymes I could bust em all day but aint got the time I could go line after line, and rhyme after rhyme It's like I'm here to give you a sign to stop your rap job cause it's not your time Damn, your bitch is fine Guess what, now she's mine! I stole er' all I had to pay was a quarter! What's funny is you could barely afford her she's like a drive-thru, she stands on the corner and when you drive up she asks "How may I take your order"

This is more like it. Not sure what that other site was upto. Mischief no doubt.
In a Big Country
I never saw you look like this without a reason Another promise fallen through, another season passes by you I never took the smile away from anybody's face And that's a desperate way to look for someone who is still a child
*In a big country dreams stay with you Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside Stay alive
I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime
Chorus
So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered

You've had me googlin' their lyrics, but each one lacks the shout. I need to track down this song.
(anyway, who'd you think should have topped the poll? anyone?) |

Well glad to see I'm not the only OCD person here.
At the risk of sounding silly it sounds something like; shout, hotshot... hehehe I don't know...

I didn't know Boards Of Canada were Scottish (not that I was paying that much attention), thats pretty cool. I always assumed they were Canadian and held off.

I heard Eugene Kelly and a few others played at the winners night. Belle and sebastian, still, hmmm.... Radio 1 said it was a big poll, I don't think one had been held before. But I would like to know who the 'experts' were. It was held at King Tuts in Glasgow, one venue I've always wanted to go to through hearing about the bands who've played there. Frank's been there, right? (wrong!?) |

Gah, can't find it, probably in the loft. On the plus side, I did find a Bauhaus tape, my old Doolittle tape, and Nirvana unplugged in New York.
So, erm...over to you HPM.

I tried Carolynanna but he's Scottish, who knows what he's saying. He was probably pissed on scotch when he sang it.
The first bit does sound like "shout", but the second bit is tougher. It sounds something like "shout out" but I am far from sure.

You could hunt down a fansite and post a question on their forum for some uberfan to answer. Good luck.
There were a few bands on the list that I really like. Idlewild or The Delgados should have won it IMO.

Frank has played King Tuts with the Catholics.
As for the Big Country discussions, it may interest you to know that the lead singer Stuart Adamson (ex- Skids too) killed himself in 2001. He did not leave a will:
