I heart Netflix. Now I need movie recommendations. The last best movie I got from them was YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, which was so good.
Anyone else have Netflix? We could add each other in the FRIENDS section...

I think it is only in the US right now, sadly. Is a mail service where they send you DVD's. See here - www.netflix.com

There are actually a lot of versions of it in the UK, too: Amazon for example has just started, but the Guardian has been doing it for a couple of years now (hiring up to 10 movies a month for something like £10, by post). |

Aaah yes, I heard about sites like this from Jim a while back. Shame we don't have them over here, or maybe we do, I can't remember. So how does the 'friends' thing work (and I don't mean friends in general, I DO have some you know before anyone starts)?

the friends things lets your friends see how you've rated the movies you've rented - so you can see what they liked/disliked, etc

And you can recommend stuff to them, etc. The funny thing is that I have been rating a ton of movies while I was bored at work. I have something like 700 movies rated, while my friends have rated around 55 or 35 movies. Losers!

I am reviving my own topic to say I watched a movie this weekend called BLUE CAR and I loved it. Very sad, so very good. And, David Straitharn is awesome. Has anyone else seen it? Anyone?

Yes Ramona, I've seen Blue Car a while ago. Both Bruckner and Straitharn were excellent.

I also dig netflix, but, is anyone jumping to blockbuster?? Blockbuster is $2-3 cheaper/month and you get 2 free instore movies and 2 free instore game rentals per month.
I am loyal to Netflix because their turnaround time is amazing, but, with kids, the games and ability to hop in the car and grab a movie twice a month is tempting. |

i hate Blockbuster with a passion - they have some really unethical/stupid business practices and i choose not to support them
my biggest pet peeve was when i was in college they announced they would be significantly cutting their VHS supply, and instead of allowing the stores to sell the used VHS tapes, corporate recommended that the tapes be discarded and/or burned, and because of the longevity of the franchise, it is believed that dozens of films which were out of print might be permenently lost because of the thousands of VHS copies that remain being destroyed by Blockbuster.

You dont get where blockbuster is without stepping on a few toes. I am no fan either, once they killed all of the local video stores their rates went nuts and they hammered home the late fees. That arrogance created Netflix.
A good, competitive free market is usually good at getting the customer what they want. Which is why Netflix is so successful. Blockbuster is trying to use its size to undercut them, cost have gone down 25% for consumers since Blockbuster entered the "dvd by mail" game, so, the consumer is happy.
I wont jump to blockbuster for months, basically because I dont trust that they will keep prices down in a less competitive environment. But, if they prove they can match Netflix on delivery, I would eventually switch if presented the best value/convenience proposition.
Too bad about the VHS thing, you would think they would be sensitive to the passionate movie afficianado (sp?). Could it be some response to pirating? |

i'm lucky to have one of the best video stores (period) right up the street from me. i don't do Netflix, but it seems awesome. i may start doing that too.. just because then i'll remember what i want to see (i always go into a video store and blank out, and then stay and brouse for like an hour)..

brian - i never heard that about out of print films and blockbuster. for some reason i find it hard to believe that certain films only exist on vhs at blockbuster.

I have never been a video store person - just because I would never get around to returning things on time, etc. I like Netflix because it seems to get me to really watch more movies (which is maybe not a great thing?) and the fact that they just appear at my house is great. I am currently obsessed with switching my que around and adding stuff.
I also agree with you, floop, b/c I always forget what I want to rent and when I can constantly add things to my Netflix list I am much more likely to watch all the movies I want to see eventually.

The blockbusters here always sold their ex rentals for dirt cheap!
And HPM we do have similar over here, my father subscribes to one (then copies the DVD's and sends them to me - we're such communists) he pays I think it's £10 a month and that includes all rentals and P&P, next time I speak to him I'll ask him which website it is.

i see no problem getting rid of vhs as long as there are other means to see the films. and there are still people (like one of my coworkers) who still haven't switched over to dvd yet, and i'm sure those are a large part of the blockbuster demographic b/c they physically can't participate in netflix.

Yes it is. The quality of rental VHS is often terrible. I've rented a few casettes with the audio so poor I couldn't follow.
The only film which would have existed on rental VHS only was Xtro. I hope they've burnt every copy.

Sure it is. How could it not be? I love films so much. Not as much as music, but then nothing comes close to that. But yeah, I LOVE films!

Hey I'm doing a trial membership now. It'd be cool to add you guys, how's that done?
The first 3 sent out today were True Romance (saw this way too long ago!), Kurosawa: A Documentary, and Paris, Texas. I've already added 144 movies to my queue today! I like this a lot so far.

i know there are multiple copies, but i assume that sometimes they get backed up - right now both true romance and where the buffalo roam are both "long wait" for me, but in the past that has only meant a week or so.
as for recommending films they don't carry - i don't know. they've had just about everything i've looked for that i know is on dvd

I signed up for a similar deal here in the UK, www.qflicks.co.uk You can get a month's free trial (such as I am partaking in) by going to www.qflicks.co.uk/metrolife and using the promo code MLQPAN9. I just watched the first of this month's 3 - The Evil Dead, loved it. I also got Miller's Crossing and The Man Who Wasn't There (mmm, good Coen...).
I'm not sure qflicks is the cheapest though, sounds like Blockbuster offers a better deal all round. But hey, this month at least, its free.

Apl - are you going to continue doing netflix? if not, how do you plan on seeing 140+ movies in your trial month? i think it is totally worth the price if you watch a lot of movies - i try and watch 3 a week, and that makes it totally worth the 17 bucks.

Yep, I am. I hope I wouldn't have gone hog-wild with that add button if not. ;) I was worried there wouldn't be a very good selection of independent, classic, and foreign movies, which are my favorite, but that is obviously not a problem. I'm at least set for most of this year.
Wouldn't mind some more obscure movies, but I ain't complainin', not after having to resort to Blockbuster and its now-clone Hollywood Video for the last 2 + years. Not complainin' at all.
